    I worked at a Ford dealership in1986, we also sold Saab cars, one day I was out test driving a svo mustang that was in for a clutch job when I ran across a Saab turbo. It was being driven by one of my buddies from the dealership and would you know it, at the next red light we raced them and I won by 3 car length s. When we got back to the shop, my buddy walked over to me and said that was the 1st time anybody had smoke him that bad. then I told him that it was in for a clutch job because it was sliping at high rpms. That was a hell of a little motor.
      When my parents had that car (new from the dealer). My dad and grandpa worked at Garrett Air Research. While one day at lunch, my dad and some guys at Garrett put one of the Garrett turbos on it. OMG, what a monster they made. They had that car for quite a few years. When I turned 16 I got to drive it. I didn't know anything about the turbo mod.
      I couldn't tell, the car drove nice and mellow. One day some guy at a light with a loping, open headers obnoxious motor was egging me on to race. At that point I had never got in a race, only been driving legally for about 8months. OMG, did I learn what turbo lag was that day and gaped the shit out of that guy. I've been a car guy for life.

    In 1979, a professional drag racer took advantage of a weight/displacement rule and entered an often overlooked drag-racing class with a Pinto Hatchback, powered by a Ford 2.0L OHC I-4 w/draw-thru carbureted-turbo setup making 306hp. The car took the class for the season's championship, and probably could've been duplicated for the street... if the camshaft chosen wasn't so "wild" and it incorporated multi-point EFI, like the SVO.
    BTW: I have seen street-able SVO Mustangs modded to push 300+HP... but they typically incorporated an intercooler considerably different than the one found on the factory engine, respectively.

    Interesting, I had an 84 SVO, it was slow off the line, but had great top end speed. I heard you say your 86 had 3.73 gear ratio, so I looked it up to see if you were right and you are. My 84 SVO came with a 3.45 gear ratio, plus less HP then the 86 model. My car was junk TBH, turbo went out on it, gear stick bolts broke, some times I would be driving it on the highway and it would just die (something in the wiring harness) and if it sat for a few hours, smoke would blow out the tail pipe when I would start it. The good things I can say about the car is it handled great and the front seats had great support.

    That's one very clean version of what I assume would be a very hard to get Mustang. I've never understood why Ford never applied all the great features BEYOND that turbo 4 into the really popular GTs. I would've loved to have been a witness to meetings where these bean counters made the argument FOR rear drum brakes instead of discs at all 4 corners. Interesting video, though.

      That's not true, in Fox Mustangs with the exception of the SVO the V8 cars got 5 lug, and others got 4 lug. The major difference was actually the rear axle, if it was 5 lug it's an 8.8, the 4 lug were a 7.5.

    I had an '85 1/2 SVO. Army green. Ugly as sin. The main reason I sold it was the top driver side door hinge mount was rotting out by 1990. I was later told they only made 4 green '85 1/2s. The other reason for selling was those horrible Goodyear VR50 tires. They looked the sh*t, but at anything below 90 degrees they were as hard as a rock and just spun.

    Ordered an 85 GT new and never even considered the SVO. I saw a few around but mainly us 20 somethings were getting the GTs. Forget how much they cost but were a bit too much higher in price to consider them also.

    Why they let the numbers game of the gt best the SVO, I’ll never understand. I too thought the 302 was a better choice then, but I always thought the SVO captured what the 80s was about. Wouldn’t it be awesome to drop the new turbo 2.3 system into one of these UFOs?

    • @nboy7
      @nboy7 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would be cool but it would need to be a built one to make serious power since the new alloy 2.3 blocks can only handle about 400HP before they crack. So i think you might be better off just tuning the Lima 2.3L and adding modern tech to it since its block is probably made of iron and can handle a ton of boost.

    That torque curve looked like something was wrong. My XR4 used to keep building torque as rpms increased (measured by the SOTPM). For torque to be dropping off from 3k, well, are we sure nothing was wrong with the car?
