He was hitch hiking after the Games in Europe and got picked up. The guy driving got into a head on and Rick was killed in that car accident.@@CoachesCornerWrestling-ue9mt
@@MDMOTP It is possible but doubtful. Rick had been using this Sanders cradle for years before this video. This is the "72" Olympics Wade won his first National title that year. There is a video available of Wade dominating a young Lee Kemp in 1976 that demonstrates several spladle opportunities.Wade never attempted one Rick would have eaten those opportunities up.
@@drewdraws1021 Schalles was friends with Sanders and they attended training camps together. Schalles told me himself he taught it to Rick at one of those camps. I have never heard it disputed before ever ect. The Spladle is a Schalles move...100%. no ands if's or buts about it....
In 1969, in the summer before my senior year of high school, I went to a wrestling camp right out of Portland, Oregon where I was from, and Rick Sanders was my coach. His coaching was responsible for me being able to go to college on a wrestling schorship. He was such a great coach, and a great guy. Bobby Douglas, a future Olympic wrestler and coach was our other coach at this wrestling camp. Those were such great days.
Awesome! Would love to know more about Rick Sanders. I know that he was a very unique and free-spirited individual. A pre-cursor to guys like Dave Schultz, Gene Mills, and Ray Brinzer. And obviously he was a great technician as well. You should check out the Zeke Jones match I posted recently, Bobby Douglas is losing his marbles in the corner. It’s awesome! Warriors. All of them.
@@CoachesCornerWrestling-ue9mt Yea, he was really free-spirited, then again it was the that free-spirited era of the late 60's & early 70's when he wrestled in the Portland area where I was from. To be honest, I thought he was the greatest, & he was so amazing to watch while he wrestled. He was a great coach for me to because we were about the same weight.
I have a lot of stuff from Don Ernst who was the most prolific US Wrestling videographer during that time. But, I don’t believe I have that match. I’ll check. I have everyone from ‘72. And I know I have a few from 76. Let’s see…
Mark Schultz is a friend of mine. He is looking for his 1981 Finals NCAA match with Mike DeAnna of Iowa. He has never seen the full match on video. It's no where to be found. Only a few mins of it is on line ect. Could you please check to see if you have the 1981 NCAA Finals..? Thanks..@@CoachesCornerWrestling-ue9mt
@@CoachesCornerWrestling-ue9mt I know that Rick Sanders lost in the both the 1968 and 1972 Olympic gold medal games by decision to Japanese wrestlers. Do you know what the score of these two matches were?
I watched this when it happened. Rick Sanders, to me, was the father of "funky style" wrestling.
RIP
I think he passed in Germany, shortly after this. Weird circumstances.
Wade Schalles taught Rick how to do the Spladle. Thats the move Rick pins this guy in.

There is a book by James Moffitt. "The Trials" there are a few Rick stories in the book...@@CoachesCornerWrestling-ue9mt
James Abbott was alternate to Sanders and his training partner for 72 Olympic team.
Rick Sanders!!! To all who ever wrestled, please familiar yourselves with this young man.
Dan Gable said he was the best technician in the country.
Why silver? Who beat him?

This is so Bad ASS! 1976 Olympic finals Russ Hellickson vs. Ivan Yaragin would be phenomenal. Can't find it anywhere....

Does anyone know if Rick Sanders lifted weights?
He died soon after the Olympics
Heads and tales more interesting and talented than the icon Dan Gable.
