  • Trying to find a solution to keep dust and debris out while still allowing airflow into the cabin. Ended up designing and making our own windscreen from nylon straps, extra strength window screen material and some hook/loop tape. Here's how we did it.

    Genius idea! Another great and very helpful video! I might do the same thing with my yxz

    Nice! love it great job. The only thing i would add to it is Velcro on the outside of the window screen and make a secondary window with clear PVC vinyl tarp. For a just in case scenario. Could possibly be a part two video?

      That's a great idea! Unfortunately, we had to sell the YXZ when we moved as we didn't have enough space in the garage. I'm back on a dirt bike now but I still ride with SxS guys.

    1:22 I've had a full glass windshield and a bunch of my friends as well and never had a chip or a crack in a glass windshield unless your racing the baja 1000 or something like that that you have to ride literally bumping the front slower pilot, glass windshields are expensive but they are worth every penny of it , they are DOT approved so they are safe to race and to have in public roads legally, and the best part is that if you want airflow you can simple open the vent and voila.

      I think it depends on where you ride and the type of driving you do. If you are mostly crawling and not ripping through a dessert, you are probably fine. If you do a lot of dessert stuff with others, you probably have an increased risk of chipping. This screen material works great (especially during the summer) but doesn't do much for keeping dust out or water.

    If you consider your wife's time and talent putting this together, you'll understand why this is a $300+ wind screen. Very labor intensive to custom fit them. But it does look sharp. The fine dust will get through but it should keep pebbles out. Expect to have to wash the fine dust out that doesn't make it through. It's like an air filter that will plug up with larger dust particles. Driving through a good rain storm will solve that issue and make the ride more fun.

      Thanks. It came together surprisingly easy. But yes, it was a bit labor intensive, especially for a single unit. If you were mass producing these, could probably done way more efficiently.

    I’m sorry if I missed it but what screen material did you get?

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't remember who we bought the material from...it was some place in Florida that makes Hurricane Screen Mesh material. It is super strong, we had tree branches hit it almost dead on while rolling down the trail at 20mph and it never pierced the material or even hurt it. I was shocked it held up. It might have been called Super Screen or something like that.

    I wonder how well that would work for a rear windshield to keep the debris from swirling around ? How did your screen hold up ?

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might help a little but probably not much. It's not really blocking wind, just keeping debris out. If you wanted to block wind, you could change the screen material out and use something more solid like a clear plastic or something though not sure how a sewing machine might handle thicker material like that.

    Any problems with tearing? On tight trails I could see even small branches being an issue.

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually no. In one of my ride videos, I mention that I took a broken tree branch about 2-3" in diameter in the screen at about 15mph, it deflected it, broke my mirror but the screen held up just fine. Surprised me as I would have expected it to bust through the screen. I ride a bunch of tight trails here in WA state and so far, it has held up great.

    Overall how does it preform? Pros and cons?

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Overall it did well at keeping crap out of the car. It doesn't do anything for water or dust but great for rocks, mud, leaves and twigs. I think for winter riding, a windshield would be better but for summer it's great providing you are not in dusty conditions.

    So I have to ask does this help keep rain and snow off of you when you are driving in a storm?

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know as of yet. I have not driven it when it was snowing but I have driven with others through snow packed trails and it kept the snow that was thrown up from the tires of the other cars in front out of the cab. As for rain, haven't done that yet so not sure. I don't know that it will do much for that as water just passes right through the screen when washing it so I would expect the same of rain.

    It's amazing how cheap we are with our sxs lol yamaha baby

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but this wasn't just done for cost savings. It was done because I was tired of trail dirt and mud being tossed into the cab. I didn't want a plexiglass wind screen because they too easily scratch and then it is hard to see out from glare. I didn't want glass because of rocks hitting it. So, this works great and also helps keep us cool with a breeze during the summer.

    What about mud

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It worked pretty good on mud. You do have to knock it off every once in a while lest it impact visibility. I think I have a ride video where it was pretty muddy and you can see the screen doing a good job keeping the mud out.

      Haven't seen that one but this worked great for big debris. Dust would still pass right through though.
