I have learned over the years of watching you guys that Johan is a thoughtful and thorough thinker and is very deliberate in his decision making. I don't question any choice he makes.
Malin, to have a footrest when sanding the insides, hang two ropes over the side, 1-2 meters apart, tie a beam in between the two ropes and you can stand on that beam. By adjusting the length of the ropes, you can adjust how high up on the hull you will stand.
Another excellent video. Skillful craftsmanship combined with patience, good humor and excellent explanations. Watching your videos is like a meditation, I always feel better after watching.
When I worked on repairing swimming pools we would sometimes use the non slip mats that go under area rugs. We used a 6'x10' so it had a lot of surface area. They looked like rubber mesh and though they won't get you put the vertical part of the hull, they will get you up to about 50 degrees. They are relatively inexpensive too.
50 years ago my neighbor had a motorcycle shop and Yamaha would ship their motorcycles to America in solid mahogany crates. He bought a planer and paneled his den!!🤗
Your care and attention to detail is remarkable. Even though I am not a sailor, I am so glad that I found your channel. I cannot wait to see your progress each week on TH-cam. The life you have created for yourselves is so admirable. Your daughter is surely blessed with two incredibly thoughtful, caring and resourceful parents. Well done!
I need to compliment your video qualities and particularly the delightful still images and snapshots interspersed wthin the subjects. I find myself freezing the presentation to watch them.
Love the keel grid, but the limber holes need to be way bigger. I’d glass in a short piece of fiber glass tube cut in half under the keel grid, so any water can run freely, and the wood is completely sealed.
I was so happy the keel on our Mono Agápē was so strong for when we hit the rock. I would sacrifice some weight/speed for being able to depend on the boat “when” accidents happen . 💯
Love my sunday days catching up on the progress and learning while my baby son sleeps .🙏 I’ve got a Question, could you maybe explain how the keel will connect to fibreglassed hulls , early before we get to it later on , just so we can imagine the works going on coming , and explain the plating if any and connection of the keel , how it distributes the load and shearing forces?
Hi, You have a great wood warehouse. Aged wood, which does not change its shape anymore. Good video. All the best to you and your family. Greetings from Finland.
Love this boat build and the careful and thoughtful decision making process. The precision craftsmanship is so awesome to watch. Keep up the fantastic work you guys are making progress!!
I’ve been following you two for years now, and I simply do not have the words to express how inspirational you guys are… Learning from you two every week is a joy! You make the world a better place…. Greetings once again from Anacortes Washington, USA.
African mohangany is durable and rugged. I have been following you for a while now, i can tell you Sapele mohagony is a good timber. I wish you the best of luck .
Sapele Mahogany is great for your keel grid. It was my choice for replacement windows. So pleased for you to have radically improved your house, at the same time as the very demanding boat build.
A little tip for you on slipping. This tip was used for different use case. May be silly but maybe it helps? Get some flat soled shoes no lugs, something like house slipper soles and use good adhesive and tack/glue sand paper to the soles. It works...
What a great shape your new floating home is taking and the time and thinking you are taking to ensure you and your family will have a very safe and strong yacht to sail wherever you go. Just wonderful. See you next time. ✨🌊💨⛵️🏝️👙🌞✨
Johann, my Uncle planked his boat with Philippine mahogany, shipped into Boston and trucked to Dover, NH where the builder, Bud MacIntosh and John built Bald Eagle a 38ft Crocker designed schooner. Truly remarkable, love the new floor timbers. The Farmhouse roof came out wonderful, things are shaping up.
Been with you guys for years now and this build is the best. I have been on and owned power boats my whole life. This build is showing me, for the first time, all the engineering that goes into a sailboat for the keel/mast/rigging. Never knew! Awesome job. A+ guys!!! 👍🏻👍🏻😎😎😎
In a few weeks when the keel work is done, you can add "off grid in the Swedish countryside" to the title and your channel will blow up, like every other YT channel. The space suits are impressive!
Your sailing boat will be ocean worthy because of you Mr. shipwright. Your efforts repeated day in and out with the best resources and tools not with compromise. Add a helpmate to the team - , she keeps the keel in the correct direction.
Awesome. Put it higher. It will give better results. The ideal is at the center of the scanned area. In this case you can put it at 150-170 cm from the floor. Those 1-2 mm at the left and right small gaps that I can see are because of this.
Sapele is one of my favourite timbers. We use it for cabinets & exterior doors. The natural ribbon striping is beautiful. It machines really well compared to the other African mahoganies. It is definitely the best replacement for the South American mahogany. Almost as dimensionally stable as well, which makes it good for doors & keel grids.
I guess Ran lll is a 50ft, but it sure looks longer than that. You and Malin are doing a wonderful job. I know it's going to be a while before she's ready to be in the water, but it's sure great watching you build her.
The thickness of the blade in English is called" kerf" u mention less wood because of the thickness of the blade. Have been watching several years thnku fr your insights. Sailing pamho.
Johan I'm a trained Engineer, Motor Vehicle, I admit, But it is still something of which you speak, I'm 70yrs old, so was a young Mechanic when British Leyland(BL)started building the "Allegro" a Mono-coque metal body, that took the car manufactures in a coup of how to build a Car 101 But now that is how "Everything" is built, No problem, But BL found reports of mechanics jacking a car up to change a tyre, with the drivers open, That door wouldn't shut afterwards, Frame distortion, Love that which you and Malin share with us,
Beautiful work. Good to hear the “Why” you are doing things as you are. This is such a massive project. With all the work, especially the repetitive tasks, I hope this is still a labour of love and not just labour.
You can put an old carpet or something similar, folded and held in place at the top edge (regala) with jacks and let it hang down the inside towards the center, so it doesn't slide to the center line of the hull (crujía).A ladder made of wood, rope and soft hooks to secure it would also be useful. Your work is great, congratulations.
I think you need not apologize for using Sapelle. It is pretty strong, and decently stable. I am a woodworker. I don't use it often as I'm not a fan of it's looks, but I have used it for a few pieces. I've had some problems with it splitting, AFTER cutting. There are some stresses that are released when cutting wood. Most of the time you get a warped board as a result. But with Sappele, sometimes it has split on me. Frustrating that it happened AFTER glue-up though! But in your situation, a good wood for the keel area. Nice work. I used to tackle projects like this when younger, but now I need woodworking projects that are done in a year or less, lol.
At the beginning when you were explaining why you were going to use sapele you missed a very important reason , but you mentioned it later on . How nice it is to work with ! That and the pleasure of using high quality tools are so important especially when you are doing this day in day out 😃🍻
Wow impressive with the tech! Back in the day I hand scribed my mahogany floors, used a bandsaw to cut and hand planned to fit the curve! Yours is way better!
Really like your tape measure glued to the ceiling, along with the laser this must provide you with very accurate placement of floors; and the longitudinal girders and eventually bulkheads.
Everything looking terrific. Question, the limber holes seem a bit small? Any reason they can't be larger? Tiny liber holes can easily get clogged from my experience.
To help out sanding: Take a plank about 1.5m then attach 2 ropes at the end and then connect the ropes to two hooks made of wood. The hooks you hang on the edge of the boat. By doing this you have something to stand on for the upper section of sanding/painting(?), if done right it should be easy to move along the sides. Maybe some extra tweaking is needed like an stick attached to the hooks to its easier to move them.
Great job with great explanations thanks! Over Build Everything now, then peace of mind later. Please make that keel grid so strong that you can hit a underwater shipping container etc at full hull speed and only scrape the paint on the keel. Just lovin your videos probably the best on the internet
Great work on the floor beams & important progress in the overall build. Before you know it you'll be onto wiring & plumbing. Malin, you looked like a space astronaut in your dust proof sanding outfit.
10 seconds before he said he was going to replace that first joist I said to myself, “I’ll bet you he’s going to replace that first one now, so they all match.” 😂👏🤓
Always impressed by your wood working skills, wood does not like me(metal yes wood no}. My Brother in law is also a master craftsman when it comes to wood working. Like the way you explain you plans, you two are doing Great. I have put my boat up for sale as I can no longer sail (C&C 38 Landfall based in Canada). You truly are an inspiration.
That's funny you mentioned you can't reach with the sander because your slipping. I just put a orbital sander in my fruit picker arm/basket/tool thingy and taped it in a bit too to sand my ceiling boards in the kitchen to give it a fresh coat of paint......I just took a break from it to watch this vid. Well good vid and it's coming along nicely.....back to sanding for me, cheers.
Find a piece of mattress foam or foam from a seat cushion to stand on for grip. It’s what is used when working on a roof. It also protects the surface you’re working on.
The layout, wood selection , glue up is very interesting. I’m interested in all the details because i can use some of your techniques to different projects I have on the go. I find planning is the most critical part of any project I’ve taken on, and when I look back at past projects I’ve always found that carefully planning would have prevented problems and resulted in a superior finished project.
In the latest video of the 'Duracell Project' the paint team preparing their hull for painting used a 'pneumatic sander' and from memory that was one of the toughest parts on the outside of the hull on Ran, maybe worth Johan thinking about
I bought a Martin Dreadnaught Junior guitar made of Sapele wood. It sounds fantastic. You’re making your keel out of wood that is also used to make excellent guitars. Maybe you’ll hear a nice tone as you’re sailing once in a while.
Sanding idea, make a light walk board bridging across with loose hanger straps out rigged on each end of walk board to hook top just to keep from sliding down. Only need meter sq plywood platform on each end to work on
I love when you explain your choices and your way of thinking, like last Time with the foam and now with the timber. Please continue doing this!
Worst part of the video is when it ends. It is awesome to see you both working on this project. Keep up the great work.
I have learned over the years of watching you guys that Johan is a thoughtful and thorough thinker and is very deliberate in his decision making. I don't question any choice he makes.

For hangers you could use the pair you made for holding the fibreglass?
Both brilliant ideas!
The level of workmanship and professionalism in your work amazes me.
Ännu en episod som förklara vad som händer varvat med lite av berättelsen om vardagen runt omkring! Tack för ännu en intressant och trevlig video!
Another excellent video. Skillful craftsmanship combined with patience, good humor and excellent explanations. Watching your videos is like a meditation, I always feel better after watching.

This boat is going to be a Solid piece of Art.
House is looking great!
The Farmhouse roof came out great!
50 years ago my neighbor had a motorcycle shop and Yamaha would ship their motorcycles to America in solid mahogany crates. He bought a planer and paneled his den!!🤗
Unbelievable the build gets better and better love the presentation; love to all 3 of you xxx

I love the wood choice you have made. Sepele is beautiful and resilient.
I was so happy the keel on our Mono Agápē was so strong for when we hit the rock. I would sacrifice some weight/speed for being able to depend on the boat “when” accidents happen . 💯
wonderful to see such amazing talent care and craftsmanship on all your projects!

Never allow those of us who watch you building your dream to tell you what you believe is best. You live your life as you wish!!!!!

The best sailing channel by miles

African mohangany is durable and rugged. I have been following you for a while now, i can tell you Sapele mohagony is a good timber. I wish you the best of luck .
I believe your material selections thus far have been solid choices
You are amazing. I Love your teamwork to complete the tasks to get this Build moving. 🥰
Sapele Mahogany is great for your keel grid. It was my choice for replacement windows. So pleased for you to have radically improved your house, at the same time as the very demanding boat build.
Very interesting and the choice of music is superb, very relaxing!

Port Angeles,WA waving a hand👋Thank you for a great show!
Apitong Wood is worthy to consider.

that scanner, that guided cut... we live in the future... :)

Good to put the heavier Sepele low in the boat instead of higher up as trim and cabinets. Good choice.
Your sailing boat will be ocean worthy because of you Mr. shipwright. Your efforts repeated day in and out with the best resources and tools not with compromise. Add a helpmate to the team - , she keeps the keel in the correct direction.

Thanks! Better not having too shallow angle I guess? I’ll test this for the rest. 👍😊 Cheers!
Once the foundations of the Boat are in place things will fly along fast. Fantastic work
You both are doing a great job!

She is but if they add a bow sprit they may be longer under sail.
Thank you for the amazing sunset picture
wow... amazing work !
Well done to you both. Yes, reliable and consistent reference points are important in any project. Thanks for taking the time to share.
What great content, you two are quite the hard workers! Looking forward to more videos.
Dude is the machine!

Yes one day you will run aground (again). It will take place years from now but thank you for making this.
Nice work, i do love my bosh track saw, gives u accuracy :)
You are amazing about what you know about what you want.
Thanks for all the detailed explanation of your plans and decision reasoning along the way.
I love the 🌻🌻🌻🌻. They are such a happy flower. I love the mahogany species explanation and your reasoning. As always, thanks for sharing.

Big respect for this nice boat project! Heart is go on and knowledge and hard work ... Good luck🍀🍀🍀

As the Old Salt said, "If you have never ran aground, you have never been anywhere!"
Second that, lakes or coastal, for me.😂
Fantastic progress Johan and Marlin!
“ what a guy “ brilliant.
Great progress!

Another awesome episode
you are awesome guys!
Thankyou 👍
I am so hooked on your progress. What a great team. But just a little more of your little apprentice. 😊
again wonderful video I am sorry I cannot join your patrons but having little money is hard all the best you three
no excuse necessary ... you are doing all the right things ... just continue !
