I replaced the upstream sensors on my 128i because one of the heater coils had failed. This guide was super helpful! Removing the metal plate wasnt too hard even though I couldn't see them and had to go by feel.

Those 2 small bolts for the heat shield on the upstream sensor are THE worst part of this job. Thanks for the great vid! Very helpful.

BMW calls it a lambda bracket. So I don't know about shielding against any heat but they've connected the ground strap to it and having it fastened into the cylinder head with two aluminum bolts.... Kind of shows why people have electrical problems with it.

So there are 4 Oxygen sensors? Had no idea there was that many. Oh and great job too!!

Really great demo. Would this be the same location and procedure for O2 sensors on a N43 318i? Thanks from the UK.

Got the code P114D and 2C7F. Is this bad after cat oxygen sensor or air is coming in somewhere after pre Cat Oxygen sensors?

How about a video on doing this on the N54 with twin turbos? Thanks.

I've done N54 o2 sensors and fundamentally there's not much difference. Its relatively the same process (with aftermarket downpipes), the connectors (and their placement) are the same or very similar on top and bottom, for instance the top ones snake around the back of the engine the same way and clip on top of the intake manifold, they're colour coated the same way, and the bottom sensors connectors clip into the same area.
The only difference with the N54 is the placement of the the sensor on the downpipes. On the pre-cat sensors for N54 they don't point straight up, they're at a bit of an angle as they are mounted on the downpipe vs the exhaust manifold on N52. If you have aftermarket downpipes, the bottom (post cat) sensors will be easier to change out as the post cat sensors are placed in such a way that you can get to them easily, but with the factory catted downpipes the placement is tucked away and you can't remove the sensor without removing the downpipe, you'll need to remove the downpipe which requires unbolting the turbo clamp, unbolting the downpipe from the cat-back, and then unbolting from the bracket that holds the downpipe in place (and bending it out of the way). You'll need 2 gaskets and maybe a new clamp and hardware to screw the downpipe back on.

Good day i got this codes on a Bmw x1 E84 but i dont know which oxygen to replace so far. Which one is before catalytic and which is after. My codes : Oxygen sensor before catalytic converter, plausibility
Oxygen sensor before catalytic converter 2, plausibility
    EWS anti-tampering protection
Oxygen sensor after catalytic converter, ageing
Oxygen sensor after catalytic converter 2, ageing.

I guess its slightly different for the earlier production dates for the E90. My production date is april 2005 for my "2006" 330i. The upstream O2 sensors do not plug in on top of the valve cover near the fuel rail.

I can confirm that my production dates are the same and it's not on the top of valve cover.
