Turns out having those H23 rods in there probably were saving this motor. Now that you've got full Rod stroke with the proper H22 Rods your Piston met your Valves under valvefloat from banging it off the limiter. Maybe lower the Compression ratio for the new motor? Good luck bud!
I was thinking the same thing. Those shorter rods may have been a blessing in disguise - or potentially a curse in hiding the valve issue. Depends on how you look at it.
@@fast97z24 The H23 Rods made it so that the Piston never went to the top of its Bore, leaving a gap. That dramatically reduces the Compression ratio. Compression ratio is the volume/pressure of air at BDC vs TDC inside the cylinder bore. If the Piston never reaches the top of its Bore then it can't compress the air/fuel as much, thus lower compression. This could be replicated with the H22 rods and a Dished Piston. Instead he chooses to run high compression turbo on his stuff, rev it to the Moon, get valve float, and blow motors.
The humility and the willingness to recognize his own oversights without projecting anger towards others is what makes Kyle awesome. Thanks for sharing that moment with us
someone mentioned in the video when you rebuilt the engine that they figured the main reason for the engine in the hatch lasting so long was the fact that it had the slightly shorter rods with a lower compression ratio. It very well could’ve been something else to cause the engine to let go, but it seems extremely coincidental, but also logical to come to the conclusion that that’s what could’ve contributed to it

If you end up needing another spare head to keep on hand, I've got one that needs a slight resurface. It's a complete head with valvetrain, cams and everything. Free if you want it. I'm in Jacksonville, but I travel to Orlando and Tampa a lot for work so just lmk if you want to set something up to grab it. Looking forward to seeing the hatch back up and running. I'm in a similar situation. Bought another engine and in the meantime, i'm respraying my engine bay and collecting a bunch of supporting upgrades for the visual presentation of the bay.

Strut tower extensions . Brake booster delete and a 1" itr master. As a 3 point strut bar as a refresh to the engine bay of the ek hatch.. For upper control arms there are other options in the marke. Hardrace comes to mind as an alternative Finally seeing you are refreshing the head. Skunk2 pro cams is a nice edition Great build and a watched this hard being built from when you were in Colorado.. check valve to piston with the longer rods? If the valve has his the piston hard enough to punch a hole in it i would also be checking the big end its easy to bruise a bearing and have that let go on you later.
if it were a static clearance issue it woulda bent the valves right on vtec, seems alot like valve float happened, on an engine with a variable lift camshaft (vtec) wanna make sure that spring keeps up with its cam lobe at rpm or a piston will kiss the bride lmao

Compression isn't the issue. The fact the valves were now much closer to the pistons is what did it. I agree, the way it was before was saving it.

It was floating valves on the limiter. Difference is that tiny bit more clearance on the old rods would allow it.

Glad you're staying H22 . You're channel as the reason. I bought a Honda prelude 5 years ago . It's fully built and almost turboed now .

It happens all the time when you float the valves into the pistons. I think you need more money or a rev limiter . No turbo and just nitrous?

I’d check out that turbo for damage on the hot side from metal coming out. Probably messed up the turbine wheel.
You might take a peek of the Turbo also. When my G23 blew up, lt damaged the turbine also and l didnt find out not until l want a bigger turbo.

Lesson is: Don't have your Rev Limiter set to KILL when you want to bounce it off the Rev Limiter for S#1+S and giggles. 👍🤦♂️😂
