  • Work with lakes, soils, forests, groundwater, ecosystems! - Come on a journey through the excruciating, exhilarating, and empowering bits of being an environmental engineer. Environmental science is increasingly being translated into computer models, which are then used to predict environmental impacts and guide management decisions. However, no model is perfect! - we need to convince as many brains as possible to choose to OWN the mathematics, to be able to both help make better models and rigorously assess them. Along the way there will be stories of nerdy joy at the little things. Ursula is working towards “creating an army”, particularly around environmental water quality and quantity. After a Chemical Engineering undergrad exchange to Sweden, Ursula stayed on to do a PhD on the environmental impact of mining, and has worked on environmental systems ever since. Projects have included the drought-driven acidification of coastal lakes,
how "new" lakes will evolve, and how reactions in soils can impact groundwater and buried infrastructure. Her Fulbright project involved modelling environmental isotopes (e.g., 14C) in groundwater, including the effect of sea level change by ~120m over the last 40,000 y, to assess paleoclimate and improve water resource management tools. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I am in my 3rd semester, going for environmental science. Afterwards I am working towards my bachelors on environmental engineering. I'm a 30, 31 next month year old of 2 boys, 6 and 1. Thank you. :) I'm saving this video to refer to throughout my journey. I felt so understood, watching this. From the heart.. chills. My passion is also water and the contamination. I'm fascinated in what I'm learning and my deeper connection with our planet. I appreciate your stance with "I can see you dont know. Let me help you." I needed to hear that.

My advice is to go for the environmental engineering degree vs the environmental science. The engineering aspect will help you for further understand what solution you are looking for from a more logical and realistic POV.
I am doing my Ph.D on aquatic chemistry in urban drinking water and for sure the engineering aspect has helped me understand everything I need to know about water treatment and its processes.

Hey, I'm an environmental engineer and this video is pretty much spot on.
We do a broad sense of everything environmental-related and can specialize in specific fields (air, water, waste, etc...). My job specifically is geared towards environmental compliance, which is to ensure that facilities follow local and federal regulations such as not dumping whatever toxic waste down a river. Some other environmental engineers do designs for water treatment plants if you enjoy working with structures more and love AutoCAD. Overall, there are many different routes to choose from, and we're all doing this to build a better and more sustainable future

I had no idea that Australia had temperate rainforests, that’s amazing. I grew up and still live in Washington State in the US, we have a temperate rainforest area too. My family visits the coast and we stay in a used to be logging town. After looking at some pics, Tasmania looks somewhat similar. My love for the environment comes from my love from the forests in Washington ❤️❤️

Beyond basic chemistry and biology the program I’m looking into only has maybe one or two science classes, and the rest are all math and physics. Do you think this is enough science if I want to work with watersheds and water resources? I am also deciding between that or doing a bachelors in environmental science (with a watershed science concentration) and then going on to get an environmental engineering masters

Environmental science is the academic field that takes physical, biological and chemical sciences to study the environment and discover solutions to environmental problems. Sciences used in environmental science include geography, zoology, physics, ecology, oceanology, and geology. Environmental science also branches out into environmental studies and environmental engineering. It provides an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to the study of environmental problems.

I'm a freshmen in college currently majoring in Marketing and I hate it and I'm currently thinking about switching my major. In high school, I wasn't the best at math or science but I've always had an interest in sustainability and environmental careers and Ive always wondered about environmental engineers. Im a pretty creative person and I worry that I won't have the right brain to succeed in this field. What do you guys think?

I’ll just give input on my experience and you can take from it what you want. I started out in engineering and loved the classes but was doing horrible in the math and science of it so I switched to marketing and graduated in that. Fast forward 10 years and I’m looking to go back to get an engineering degree because I know it’s definitely something I’m passionate about. If I could do it again I would have tried to build a network of students and professors I could lean on to help me through it. As a side note I now work in the water industry and get to go use the lab to ran tests on water, turns out when it’s something I’m passionate about I enjoy it!

Very much so. I'm a Civil Engineer, practising in Nigeria. I've been on Gully Erosion Remediation works for 2 years.
to make it clear that erosion works are part of environmental engineering, we will first investigate the cause of these gullies. Most times, gullies are as a result of Watershed management problems. To effectively curb the menace of gullies on soils, we carry out a hydrological and geotechnical study of the area and model it. Then we go on to design the hydraulic and geotechnical structures to remedy the erosion problems.

Play of words! She just spoke about general stuff and some techniques and tools used. Every site can be different and you need to come up with the methods to remediate. sometimes they are not straight forward. You need to use and follow local rules and regulations to get your sites cleand up to clean standards.
First thing what contaminates are you chasing, do research of the area, present use and past use. Once you have that then you move alone with testing to determine affected areas and then move along to remediation and final phase monitoring to insure you have cleand it up.
