An incredible device at the very least.A miniature equivalent of the technological genius behind the construction of the Great Pyramid. These old masters were gifted with unprecedented technical ability. This device alone should profoundly inspire today's engineers.MAGNIFICENT!!
What gets me is its rarity. Can you imagine, every clan chief, rich merchant and anyone else in power would have wanted one... something so advanced would surely have become instantly popular? Maybe the one man sophisticated enough to make one had died after making this prototype? Maybe the Antikythera vessel never got to where it was going, which was to reveal it civilisation at large... so it just died, the world never to see the like of it again for over 1400 years? Amazing.
It is true that the Egyptians knew some things, but their knowledge didn't really surpass the needs of their times. The Greeks did more. Even the greatest geniuses of history were specialized". This is true in the modern times, but back then a single subject wasn't that overwhelming, so a single man could master many subjects.
One might wonder what other items preceded before this mechanical item, after all we did not arrive at the Swiss watch nor digital watch first time, there is a whole history of watches preceding the present ones, SO !!, what preceded this mechanism, & what else was derived from its design, that we have yet to find.
I am an armchair historian. A quick check shows that the Sumerians had accomplished a great deal and earlier than the Egpytians. Further your assertion that these civilizations borrowed and learned from each other seems reasonable. However, the Greeks are given much more credit than they deserve. Hippocrates, Pythagoras, etc. are given the tiltle "father of" their crafts when they clearly are not. This is re-writng of history. I will enjoy learning about the Sumerians. Thanks.
For my opinion, the whole motion which is presented by the mechanism, might have already inspired some intellectual researchers into thinking that perhaps things go circular around a sun. The motion also explains why planets do such 'embarassing' movements forth and back again relative to another (what we see from earth which is still thought to be in the center of everything). Also what is strange about Mercury's cycle. Seen from heliocentic view, all motion is explained.
The Egyptians have developed their systems and taught same to Initiates around the world long before the Greeks were allowed into the temples. It was only after the invasion of Alexander the Destructor (called the Great by western mythorians) when the temples and the libraries were plundered, that the Greek gained access to all the ancient books, on which Aristotle built his own school and his reputation as the wisest man that ever lived!
Too bad ego always seems to get in the way of objective history. Michael Wright deserves most of the credit for unlocking the secrets of this amazing mechanism. Who was the second team to climb Everest? Wright was the first and deserves the credit.
Excellent documentary. "The history of the technology doesn't go in straight line". How evident is that, despite of some highly educated individuals in high places not admitting that. Being acquainted with the today's mechanical technologies, I try to imagine the way it may have looked the production facility which produced such jewel of mechanical prediction of astronomical events, over two millennia ago. The archeological discoveries from that time and all over the world didn't find anything to give us evidence that such technological complexity ever could have been developed in that distant past. They should have existed because all the knowledge to built those very complex tools couldn't have existed in the very limited Mediterranean areas on earth. Even more, for the relatively limited benefits of that mechanism produced in those times, was that sophisticated and expensive effort really worth it? Same questions apply to the sophisticated building technologies for the ancient megalithic structures we can't explain. As examples are: the carving from the bedrock of the Unfinished Obelisk, building the pyramids of the ancient Egypt, the huge polygonal stone blocks walls in south America, the incredible precision for the huge stone blocks carving of Pumapunku, etc. It make sense to conclude that parallel advanced civilizations interfered with our human limited civilization in the past. If there are disagreements about that, please let me know, but only with good evidence and reasoning.
humanity did not make any progress for at least 2500 years after Greece was occupied by romans...then a big part of ancient greek knowledge was discovered which resulted in 150-170 years of huge progress..we should thank ancient greeks for what they gave us...
thanks for this video ... you are doing a great work.... you show the world that Greece is not just a country..... there is a whole idea and filosophy behind Greece and thats why they trying to destroy it. They use every weapon they know till today!!!
There's mention of helio- vs Earth-centered below. As a matter of fact, that argument is null as far as the AM is concerned. It shows where the sun and moon (and perhaps the other visible planets) will appear from Earth at a point in time, but either system can be used to calculate those positions, as indeed they were both used - Ptolomy's Earth-centered until Kepler, and thereafter heliocentric. Indeed, some Greek scholars see in the AM proof that ancient Greek astronomers had adopted helio-centrism, but it was a professional secret because of religious pressures.
The Greeks I heard, spent years and baskets of money to make this one device, then, when the people found out how much it cost, they threw it into the sea, only to be discovered today as ancient treasure,so looks like the Greeks had the first mechanical computer and Professor John Atanasoff and graduate student Clifford Berry built the world's first electronic-digital computer at Iowa State University
Our assertion is that religion gets in the way of industrial civilization. It was not until the West broke the back of religious control of civil sector. christmanpunch's observations about Islam are correct, and contribute to our argument. Islam has yet to have its reformation period. Providing the Western renaissance does not come to an end, it's unlikely Islam with have one of its own. Rather if it reforms will probably join the West much as Japan has and China is doing now.
Pythagoras, the oldest of the so-called Greek-thinkers was a student in Egypt for several years. He was exiled when he started to teach what he had learned. Socrates was executed for teaching ‘foreign ideas.’ Plato was sold into slavery. Aristotle was also exiled. What we are asked to believed by western scholars was that these ancient Greeks were persecuted in a society that is sufficiently advanced in philosophy.
At least we are all humans regardless what nations we come from. I'm not so much into history but I bet my ass that every civilisation had great inventions. All of them together result in what we are and have now. So stop fighting each other.
@HalSamuel I was thinking that myself. Finding that old instrument maker. He's probably the only man on the planet that could look at the mechanism and understand it at the level that is required
You are overlooking the fact that physics in the time of Aristotle was little more than philosophical debate, while you'd need years of training in physics and mathematics just to get a basic understanding of Einstein's theories. And of course we have much more data today than back then. Just to put an example.
@AthenaionPolis None that have been found. Recall that this device is the only one found so far and no written descriptions of it were found, so other devices may have also existed in other cultures, but were lost and forgotten. Metals oxidize and flake apart and woods tend to decay. Back then, it was difficult to mass produce complex things and difficult to duplicate documentations by hand without a printing press.
Interesting question but a relative easy answer I believe. Their world didnt have the same values of the modern western world. They had the knowledge for industrial revolution but didnt want to develop it. This is why all the greatest secrets of (lets say) technology were kept secrets. See the Pythagoras school and the way they were keeping their knowledge.
probably because man never understood it's importance until later years. never appreciated the beauty of how gears work until we discovered it ourselves only to find that it was already discovered, by somebody who's not even verified yet, a whole millenia beforehand. scarcity, effort, awareness, and cost probably played a hand in not making it more mass produced. if i was living in the ancient times, why would i need something like that which can hardly benefit me unless my field dictated it.
I'm open to any new ideas even if it debunks my current beliefs so any recommendations would be great in my book. But please be open minded yourself...are you at all familiar with the mystery schools and secret society's?
@wer4321 The reason is very simple.Being a member of the aristocrasy he had no economic problems and a great deal of time for reading, researching and observing.By the way he never left the Greek-inhabited regions.
Now this makes a lot of sense. Do we have a good record of the nature politics in the time of the Christian take over of Pagan Europe? I doubt that any technical class was big enough to show up in the record. I'm betting the technical class went more with the institutions of Rome, rather than being singled out. That said, we do know Christianity's first reaction to modern science and engineering. I'm ready to believe that early Christians might have looked a bit like the Kuhmer Ruge.
Actually the Greeks themselves give credit to Egypt in several instances. But their quotations are ignored. Hippocrates has said he is the child of Imhotep. And Socrates has said this knowledge comes from the land of the land of the blacks. And their countless travels to Egypt are well documented.
Yes, but people like christmanpunch can't deal with levels of gray, only black and white. The question was "Why did ancient Greece miss out on developing a tech sector given the theory that somebody in ancient Greece was playing with lathes, mills and gear hobs?". It took the protestant reformation to break the monopoly of the Western Orthodox (Roman Catholic) church to allow for the industrial age. Note how the Eastern Ortohdox lands wait for the 20th cen.
Of course. And nobody, me included, wouldt deny Egyptian influences in that regards. But saying that Aristotle "stole" his wisdom from Egypt because of that is simply preposterous. It would be like saying that the Arab physicians, matematicians and astronomers of the Middle Ages "stole" their knowledge from the Jews because Islam borrows some elements from the Bible.
There is some validity to what you say, but the fact that there was so little knowledge meant that it had to be developed. That takes time, passion, and hard work. This would only happen if someone was obsessed with a certain subject. How many subjects can a man be obsessed with? Even genius has it's limitations. Be realistic.
that or the technology lived and was passed on through other people before it was lost. if it was lost. or at least track of it was lost before it's rediscovery. the video tackled this argument also.
archimides died 212 bc mechanism c 140 bc therefore he probably DIDN'T make it???? it's obviously meant to outlive the lifespan of several generations, archimedes seems likely
Why doesn't Greek architecture match the Egyptians? Why is Pythagorous given credit for thoeries that clearly already existed? Why is Hippocrates called the father of medicine when he refers to himself as the child of Imhotep? The idea that all of these concepts could be idealized while the greeks were involved in numerous wars, and while they were being persecuted by the greeks themselves does not seem plausible. More likely they were given access to Egyptian libraries by Alexander.
If I were an anthropologist I'd be asking myself what kinds of tools made these systems, and why did Greece miss out on developing an industrial machine sector of their society the way Western society did. Western society was not able to manufacture gears of that precision until the early 1800's. My goodness do you realize that ancient Greece could have had an industrial steam age over a thousand years before Europe and America did! What was it about their society that made them miss out?
about physics, natural science, logic, and psycology, oh yeah, poetry and meteorlolgy, the soul, heaven, etc. They plagarized the Egyptians. Who by the way left proof of their mastery of knowledge.
@AthenaionPolis I saw a show where they show the wonders of the ancient Greecks. There was a invention which one is floated Chariot with horse and Helios before a statue of Zeus. It was a big magnet which elevate it. It was recorded by tons of people. So after of that and see the other invention like the blood crying goddess, the Venus and Mars ,,closing to each other" statues and other magnetick things working model I actually start to believe that is possible. I wish I could be taht smart.
"Proven in every period of its development, the western European culture has tried to rid himself of the Greeks. This work is imbued with deep disappointment, because whatever we create, seemingly original and worthy of admiration, lose color and life in comparison with the Greek mode, came to resemble a cheap copy, a caricature. So again and again soaked in a rage erupts hatred against the Greeks, against this small and arrogant nation..." Friedrich Nietzsche on Greece, around 1870

@uboot1967 Yes, that what happens when you're trying to argue on youtube with 500 max character limit... I'm saying i don't know if the agglosaxons made anything important, and i don't care compairing their past with the greeks' past, what does the current state of things tell you? Does it make any difference? I don't care about the so-called glorious past (apart from learning from it), it's the present that matters and that's pretty crap (and i'm not refering to Greece only).

@xx2RAHxx his attitude towards the physical world caused a great depression within the studies of the world, science. It's to much to write in a youtube comment, but plato is not to be thought of as anything but a fool.
Not SHHH they were right !! THE COMPUTER IS MADE BASED ON A NON ROTATING EARTH AND A GEOCENTRIC SYSTEM .. THE FLAT EARTH IS EXPLODING THE WORLD = WAKING UP OUT OF ALL THE LIES , THIS IS THE BIGGEST 1 .. THE EARTH = FLAT GOD MADE THE EARTH IMMOVABLE EXACTLY WHAT OUR SENSES TELLS US .
It's also obvious that the Greeks and Romand did not integrate machine tools into their society, and this was a choice before the rise of the Christ-cult. So rather than blame the christians on this one, I'm going to blame the society as a whole. However wrecking the calculus for 1700 years was enough.
@uboot1967 We do?Not that it's of any importance, but after some thousand years and so many different people coming by the place where Greece is today i higly doubt you're a direct descendant... Back then i don't even think the whole concept of "countries" existed altogether as it does today. Apart from that, there's a huge difference between STUDYING the past and LIVING in the past. You can learn a lot from history, but when you're clinging to the past you're losing the present.
Ummm also you've missed a basic fact. Islam was not around to stop the Greeks from developing industry. The Pagans and Christians were. I suggest you not only turn your critical eye to Islam of course it deserve it, but also to your own faith. In fact I suggest casting a critical eye on faith itself.
Trust God Jesus died 4 ur sins n arose on the 3rd day is greatest truth in history n He will come back to take all His believers bodily to heaven alive r dead. C 'Empty tomb' in google.........!..
Socrates' "foreign ideas" were more likely to be of Central Asian origin (see Dodds 1951); all we know of Pythagoras comes from later sources. Nowhere in the Egyptian sources do we find the kind of scientific knowledge we praise the Greeks for. Not in the Rhind papyrus, not in the medical papyri, not on "temple walls". Good luck with your book, but I'd advise you to stick to facts instead of legends. Have a nice day!
I believe, this machine was invented to keep track of ur gurlfriend visiting u when ur wife is not at home. clever!! nice. i wish i had one. But yes it is a huge invention of that time.
Thank god we have people with the passion and patience to study and understand discoveries like this.

Absolutely Wonderful. Thanks to all the people involved in bringing this in the light for the common public.
Thanks for the video! The people investigating and sorting this out appear to also be on the genius level. Bravo to all of you!

@xx2RAHxx his attitude towards the physical world caused a great depression within the studies of the world, science. It's to much to write in a youtube comment, but plato is not to be thought of as anything but a fool.
I'm gonna be ignorant and call out the aliens on this one.
Shhh, school teachers around the world will tell your kids that the earth was flat until Columbus arrived.
@@mark-Vortex369 First I didn`t believe you. Then I noticed, that you wrote in caps only. THAT convinced me ...
It's also obvious that the Greeks and Romand did not integrate machine tools into their society, and this was a choice before the rise of the Christ-cult. So rather than blame the christians on this one, I'm going to blame the society as a whole. However wrecking the calculus for 1700 years was enough.
hmmm... looks like a time machine. LOL JK, that would be crazy though.
"Enormouth thignifiganth..."
Have a nice day!
oh dude, how could i forget... shame on me.
