We will probably never get that. Roman Reigns just came off a 3 year heel run, after many years of being pushed as basically the new Cena. They won't do another mega baby face heel turn for a while, and by then we're probably past Cena's retirement age.
He got overexposed for a few years and his character and ring work got bogged down in a rigid formula. He was capable of more, and that's the frustrating thing. He should've had the whole crowd - he's strong, fast, dependable, can be goofy and serious and can actually work a good match. He carried Khali to a decent match for goodness sake - but WWE created the polarisation. He's only getting his respect now that the over exposure is no longer an issue and the crowd can now appreciate what he brought.
A lot of people believe that wrestlers like the Nexus, Bray Wyatt, Rusev, and Ryback all failed to reach their potential solely because they lost to Cena. That is not completely true. Part of the reason why losing to Cena was considered a burial was because WWE sucked at building up other stars and having long-term plans for them. Unless their names were Randy Orton, Edge, HBK, Triple H, Batista, CM Punk, or Daniel Bryan, there was no plan for them after losing to Cena which made the loss look like a burial. Compare that to Roman Reigns beating the likes of Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, Cody Rhodes, Drew McIntyre, Kevin Owens, Logan Paul, and LA Knight. None of those guys have fallen off after losing to Roman, partially because WWE is better at long-term planning now than they were when Cena was around.
Cena was literally the perfect pg era star. The in ring product wasn’t always the best at that time but the amount of money he was bringing in from merch was insane!
Cena always embraced the hate he never backed away from it. I remember he even went to ECW and they were cussing him out flipping him off😂😂😂 F*ck you cena signs everywhere
Around the time he became big match john, slightly before he semi retired, everyone loved him. They just did the thing for culture. Like kurt angle. He's had rough patches as the guy but he did just as much to csrry the brand. Man's the GOAT.
Stone Cold got put through the ringer when he was on top. So did Rock. They were the top guys, but they were always getting screwed out of the title. They were always having to chase it. Cena was the champion most of the time with maybe a month or two in between where he didn’t have it and wasn’t injured. It was a very Hogan-esque run coming off of an era where the top baby faces were always getting screwed. Cena’s run was very stable after the audience was trained from the Attitude Era to expect chaos. So it was quickly stale for fans of the Attitude Era and Stone Cold and The Rock. And for me it didn’t help that guys I liked for so many years like HBK, Edge, Jericho, Angle, Orton either kept coming up short against Cena or only had a taste of the championship before Cena conquered again. Once Cena was no longer the top champion all the time, I started appreciating him more again.
Cena winning so much is what made moments like MITB 2011, the funhouse, AJ winning clean at Summersla, Brock returning etc possible. That doesn't happen with anyone else because no other face has the crowd so polarised to create the rub that Cena brings.
I still remember a number of years ago when Cena asked all of the women and children in the audience to chant "let's go Cena", and all the men to chant "Cena sucks". It was being played as his last hoorah before being fired on kayfabe, so everyone was having a ton of fun. Like a going away party. Good times.
I remember every week Cena would come out wearing the US Title the crowd would chant he sucked even after his music played and then him and whoever was across from him that week would put on an absolute classic.
We evolved as fans the day we figured out the words "John Cena Sucks" fit perfectly in the song. It was like unlocking a new move in a game the first time I heard it.
Cena is right. The wrestler is not at fault for the booking that creates unwanted crowd reaction. All a wrestler can do is roll with it and do their thing. Maybe the decision will be made to turn the wrestler accordingly like with Edge, but sometimes not. WWE wanted Cena to be at the top and the good guy, if the crowd hates it, that gives the heels ammuniation which is fine, Cena could always handle himselfi n these situations
I admit I hated John Cena for YEARS! Though since he started acting/only makes special appearances, and I've gotten to see how good of a person he really is; I love Cena now.😅😊
Eventually, it became similar to Kurt Angle’s, “You Suck” chants, where it hardly fazed him and sorta turned into a iconic “out of respect” thing. Hell, Cena used to play the crowd with it too by doing the conductor gestures to it. I genuinely hope nobody was doing it to insult Cena, because if anything, it did the opposite. lol
It genuinely started out as people insulting him. When the camera panned to the crowd when the chants first popped up there wasn’t a smile in sight. People were sick of his shit and were tired of seeing “Superman” bury their favorite wrestler. But over time, as Cena started to show up less and less and eventually became a part timer, the chants became more a sign of respect. Because while fans were sick of seeing him, they also missed having him around in a weird way. For over 20 years he’s been a constant in the wrestling world, so to not have him there regularly anymore is a bizarre feeling for a lot of people.
Wouldn't be surprised if he talked to Kurt Angle about it. Just have to embrace it and accept that it's part of your character now. Plus, it's better to get that reaction than to get Jindered. Look at Dom, he gets booed just existing and he gets air time. But you know if Jinder comes out, the crowd is basically silent.
He was hinting at it here. But it felt like during his initial major run, he was beating major wwe legends cleanly. And they were selling hard to make up for his limited skills at the time. Idk I was 16 at the time. But it felt like he was never really at risk of losing.
In todays world if you are booed you are the good guy. The world is evil. Wrestling fans have always booed the good guy. Bob backlund was right in everything he said as a heel. Bret Hart was right when he was a heel. Savage was right when accusing Hogan of lusting after liz. Hogan got way too close and in no way should he have brought liz to the back and leave Randy Hogh and dry. Savage had every right to snap.
The "John Cena sucks chant" to the music didn't start until around the mid 2010s. So it wasn't a decade. However the "Cena Divide" and "Let's Go Cena/Cena Sucks" chants started around 2006 and 2007.
People didn't do it that long out of dislike though. It was just a meme, people loved Cena at this time. People keep trying to rewrite history and act like people hated Cena as much as they hated Roman during his babyface era.
100% Truth. This is the same thing fan did to Kurt Angle when fans chanted "You Suck" during his entrance. Everybody liked Cena back then. They were just bored of his stale character and wanted him to change it up a bit.
John you say you won a lot and lost a lot, you didn't lose that much and you never lost clean. The John Cena matches became so monotonous you could predict all Cena's matches
He's 100% on this and I say this as someone who hated the booking almost 100% throughout his career and his moves were meh. BUT he worked safe and smart. And as a person, some imho really bad actions aside,as a,person as a man ,he's a Dub
I think people back then were scared about him being the hulk hogan type, and now that he returns occasionally the crowd acknowledges that he was never that kind of guy.
It seems like a similar case to Kurt Angles "you suck" chants where at first the crowd does it to unsult the wrestler but they now do it to pay respect to the wrestler
Its like when Kurt Angle had the you suck chants and used it to have fun with the crowd such as the infamous backstage bit with Edge you just go out get the job done
Cena is like Angle, Edge developed the catchphrase for the song. While the fans followed along and enjoyed saying it overtime. Angle hated his theme but when the "YOU SUCK" chant came with it, he embraced it and loved it. John has done the same thing, but I'm sure he feels ticked off when Chicago fans say it knowing that they mean it.
Na the older fans generally got fed up with Cena winning but the Lets Go Cena kids have grown up and are changing the narrative. It was tedious when he was the Top guy, he always won the final stipulation match, his style was like Hogan's where you had to be a kid to enjoy it. He's a great person & what the company needed after Benoit murdered his family but let's not start telling lies about his popularity
Kurt Angle got the You Suck chants. Now John Cena got the John Cena Sucks chants. I was hoping at that moment he would finally become Heel. Someday Heel Cena will shock the World.

None of those guys have fallen off after losing to Roman, partially because WWE is better at long-term planning now than they were when Cena was around.
This was supposed to be the point where he should have been a heel
Cena was literally the perfect pg era star. The in ring product wasn’t always the best at that time but the amount of money he was bringing in from merch was insane!
Cena always embraced the hate he never backed away from it. I remember he even went to ECW and they were cussing him out flipping him off😂😂😂 F*ck you cena signs everywhere
Around the time he became big match john, slightly before he semi retired, everyone loved him. They just did the thing for culture. Like kurt angle. He's had rough patches as the guy but he did just as much to csrry the brand. Man's the GOAT.
THEY Can be Polarized, but I stay Loyal!!! RRRRRUBBBBUAHHHDOOOOO!!!
#CVVClips #WeStayLoyal!!!
#JCNEVERSUCKED!!!
I always thought the theme song thing was an homage to the Kurt Angle theme song thing.
30:43 terroriser just hit them all with that meliodas full counter 😂😂
He would've been the best ever if they let him be a heel
Real shit
He was a Heel... For Peoble that diden't liked him.
All this Year's. ^^
@cloudxz92 he had good heat in aew. If he went heel there it would've been really good
Cena winning so much is what made moments like MITB 2011, the funhouse, AJ winning clean at Summersla, Brock returning etc possible. That doesn't happen with anyone else because no other face has the crowd so polarised to create the rub that Cena brings.
No one can connect with fans like cena does
He needs to come out, and tell all his fans TO STICK IT!!😂 Go on a nice heel run to end his career! GIVE US WHAT WE WANT JOHN!!
Basically said money talks in simple terms
I still remember a number of years ago when Cena asked all of the women and children in the audience to chant "let's go Cena", and all the men to chant "Cena sucks".
It was being played as his last hoorah before being fired on kayfabe, so everyone was having a ton of fun. Like a going away party. Good times.
I believe that was where he became stale to the majority of fans
I remembered when they were booing roman reigns now look at him now !
Would have been interesting to seem him go heel.
“What does a virtuous guy do to that?” half the roster that thinks turning heel and f*ckin up their character should listen to this legend spit facts
I remember every week Cena would come out wearing the US Title the crowd would chant he sucked even after his music played and then him and whoever was across from him that week would put on an absolute classic.
Remember that ECW match vs. RVD.
It was not everyone who chanted that but at least he was able to be himself despite sometimes the crowd being two faced with him
It was part of the fun for the
fans. They could react negatively to a face and Cena would do his thing. People would react to him which is always key.
Love the guy! NEVER GIVE UP!
He embraced Kurt Angle phase
@@docproc144 it’s still not a sign of respect, it’s not the same as Kurt
@@NeroSparda99it is now used as a sign of respect. Nobody has booed since 2017.
Honestly I think the majority of people who boo John Cena, ENJOY booing John Cena.
Good reaction or bad reaction as long as he is getting a reaction then that's all that matters to a wrestler.
And now its a sign of respect like Kurt Angle
In todays world if you are booed you are the good guy. The world is evil. Wrestling fans have always booed the good guy. Bob backlund was right in everything he said as a heel. Bret Hart was right when he was a heel. Savage was right when accusing Hogan of lusting after liz. Hogan got way too close and in no way should he have brought liz to the back and leave Randy Hogh and dry. Savage had every right to snap.
😂i still remember that one very well.. as a kid watching that one...🐐
Now from the crowed.... that was classic lol
As a great man once said: "Hate me or love me, you watched."
Nobody was booing Cena until The Rock
Came back in 2012 😂
It seems like a similar case to Kurt Angles "you suck" chants where at first the crowd does it to unsult the wrestler but they now do it to pay respect to the wrestler
In this business, you would rather get a reaction from the audience (cheer or boo) rather than no reaction at all.
Every time this man speaks in floor by how centered and intellegant he is. There won't be another like him folks
Angel and Edge were supposed to get those reactions
@@DC-YTCI wouldn't say change the narrative. If anything, the Smarks didn't like the idea that Cena was the guy after Austin.
Big respect for john
Kurt Angle got the You Suck chants. Now John Cena got the John Cena Sucks chants. I was hoping at that moment he would finally become Heel. Someday Heel Cena will shock the World.
Now it's John cenas back
Kurt Angle, man.
How did *HE* develop the tough skin? 😳🤔😅🤣
That’s because the adults who booed him were having to buy shirts for their kids that didn’t know better.
