    This episode I ride the classic 401 Trail in Crested Butte. Perhaps one of the most famous trails in the country and a firm favorite to Colorado, what this trail lacks in challenging riding, it makes up for pure breathtaking scenery. Ride it in August and you will be descending tight singletrack through alpine meadows, aspen stands and many many wildflowers. Truly one for the bucket list.

    Refreshing to have someone say they aren’t as strong as they use to be ( me included ) 😊

      eMTB helps a lot these days! Unfortunately there are still many parts of the country, like the 401, that don’t allow them still.

    Thank you for sharing your video that I watched from Trail Forks and here on TH-cam. The first time I mtb the 401 was twenty-eight-years ago, i think it was around Summer '96. Crested Butte was a small town, compared to what people see in Crested Butte now. Anyway, I enjoyed your video because it sparked a sensation in my soul when I rode this trail, riding thru the great fern and aspen forest. This is what I remember the most, the emerald forest section. Had this been me, I would have stopped more to take flora pix...but that is me. Back in the 90s, we didn't have cell phone camera's, or GoPro, but we had film cameras. I can't find my pix of riding in addition the Betty Cline to the top of 401. Speaking of which I like how stable you kept your camera while riding downhill. Also, thank you for showing kindness to uphill riders and being kind. We, mtb'ers in the 90s had many meetings with open space and national forest rangers, including hikers, equestrian, and mtber's to learn how we can share the the trail without pissing each other off for not yielding or showing kindness. Keep the rubber side down and happy sharing.

      Thank you. As a similar 90s mountain biker, for me the ride is about the journey and getting out and appreciating natures beauty. I’m not your shuttle bro type rider. That type of exploration is often not covered much on YT unfortunately.

    Thanks for another excellently produced video. I had the opportunity to ride the 401 for the first time last fall. Incredibly beautiful. And...
    1) I feel better knowing I am not the only one who has to walk part of the section between the road and the pass
    2) I hear you with the vertigo. And someone who doesn't live in Colorado, I was totally enamored by the views. Which meant I stopped a lot and had a hard time concentrating on the trail
    3) The scariest part for me was at 15:10 point of your video. I came rolling into those set of trees at a highish rate of speed. And there was huge, hairy, brown beast lying in the middle of the trail. I thought if I die by bear, hey at least its beautiful. Turned out to be a large cow. I spooked a few cows hidden in the tress. Once our collective heart rates dropped. The cows and I had a good laugh.

      Thank you. Yeah the section between the road and the top is surprisingly tough. Lol at the 🐮

      @@Roaming50 HAHA! Yes! We definitely cheated. But we had some solid days of climbing too. Think we did something like 2500ft of climbing and 5500ft of descending when we did Monarch Pass to Agate. We had a big ride the day we did Doctor Park too. Pretty damned wild. I love me some Colorado.

      @@CaliradoKid I love Doctor Park. I still have to post that video. I started in sun and ended the final descent in rain. Nothing like that final descent in the wet to say Sketch!

    Great great video. Lots of good info and great views. What were the specs on mileage, elevation, and time for the whole loop?

    • @Roaming50
      @Roaming50  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can find my Strava link in the description above which will give stats. Note that I am now in my 50s and most riders will climb faster that I can. Also I lose time with messing with the camera gear so depending on your fitness you could probably complete this in 2/3rd the time it took me.

    Since the time you changed Changed over to a 1-12 . How has the cassette , chain and chainring faired have they lasted longer than a Year ????????????? Have you had to change any parts ?????? within a Year ?
    I noticed how the rains have washed away parts , and it's noticable that the trail is well used due to the lack of growth as it's bare as chuff . Your very lucky you didn't crash into that chap .
    Am surprised you never stopped to take pics along the way .. to me it's not about being the fastest .. it's about enjoying the view

    • @Roaming50
      @Roaming50  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      colintraveller I don’t often stop to take photos as I have the video :). When I take selfies it’s usually on a climb and it’s an excuse for a breather.
      As to the XT 12-speed. It’s worked perfectly since it was installed and I have not even needed to adjust my index cable.

    Hey man
    Great video, heading to CB and the 401 this July, please help me with this question, I’m not a good climber ... so is there any transportation to take us to the trailhead? So we can save some energy ..
    I believe you started and finished at Schofield pass, is that correct?
    Thanks in advance

    • @Roaming50
      @Roaming50  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually started and ended in the town of Mount Created Butte and rode Gothic Rd to the top of Schofield Pass where, yes you start the 401. I did see some some shuttle companies taking people up to that spot but all I saw where hikers. Not sure if they cater for mountain bikes.
      I’m not a strong climber myself these days. While Gothic Road is long and steep in places it is also quite doable. Just take your time and enjoy the scenery.

    • @Roaming50
      @Roaming50  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tough call. How novice? If you are comfortable with braking and speed control on steeper slopes and have the physical endurance for the climb then I would say go for it! Just take your time, enjoy the views snd walk what you’re not comfortable with. I would say the second half may be beyond novice but the first part is mostly okay.

    Yeesh, that exposed part was a terrible spot to get hung up on a rock

    • @Roaming50
      @Roaming50  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That didn’t even cross my mind the time. While one might tumble a bit, nothing on this trail is particularly life threatening.
