    Can you eat carp? Yes, and they are super delicious to eat. Check out this video on tips to bowfish carp from a boat. I will show a beginners tips and tricks on bowfishing carp.
    We bowfish for grass carp using a simple compound bowfishing kit with no sights, so this is done completely instinctively. The arrows have a special arrow tipped with a point that keeps the fish from falling off. A bowfishing reel helps you keep the line only, and the bowfisherman hand pulls the line in with the fish on. The arrow tip is then unscrewed to allow the barb to face backwards releasing the fish. When the bow is fired, the arrow comes out and a slide hold the string attached to the arrow for retrieval. The line is held into the spool with a clutch, but freely spools out on it's own if it is not held down. Bow fishing gear is pretty straight forward, but having the right stuff is essential.
    A good bowfisherman can land 100's of these invasive fishes in an afternoon. A beginner might be lucky to get 1 or 2...sometimes, they are even completely skunked, so there is a lot of skill involved in bowfishing.
    The bowfishing boat we are using is outfitted with a platform to stand on which helps elevate the bowfisherman to a better height so they can see deeper in the water without having the light refract as much. When you bowfish, it's important to aim lower than you think based on how the light reflects. Bowfishing line should be very strong and easy to hand with your hands so it does not cut it.
    We are bowfishing in Ontario, Canada out of the city of Innisfil, Ontario. You don't need anything fancy to book a trips. It is advised that you wear clothing you don't mind getting dirty, wear water shoes, or boots, and protect yourself from the elements including the sun and rain.
    When it comes to tactics for bowfishing, Donny has a lot to choose from. Rather than sit and wait, he prefers to chase carp down sometimes getting them airborn for a shot.

      Maaan..just slice the carp up an deep fry it. Especially a smaller one, with just a bit of salt..goes all crunchy and sweet...I eat everything, head, fins,bones...you will salivate every time you even see carp. Or smoke them. Or.....well .... in my country they are one of the big 4 : carp, catfish, pike and sturgeon. Nuff said.

    Here in germany carp is around 15-18€/ kg of filet. And that goes for farmed carp, wild cought would get you more. It's a common holidays food, like for christams, new years eve and so on. Good fats too.

    • @johnr797
      @johnr797 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But of course, this being Canada regular people aren't allowed to make any money selling them, even though carp are an invasive species in many places here.

    I tried carp and gar (duuno if you have gar in Ontario) for the 1st time a couple years ago and was blown away. Actually has a very mild taste. Good fish to eat. It'd be a good way to stack up food on Wilderness Living Challenge.

    • @j-rocd9507
      @j-rocd9507 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I talked to an old timer when I was kid fishing and told me that gar can be delicious if you know how to make it. I never tried it. Around here sometimes you find gar skeleton with the beak snapped off because people just kill um and pitch um on the shore but they are native species. Sad.

    • @DeeplyDrivenOutdoors
      @DeeplyDrivenOutdoors 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@j-rocd9507 True. They get lumped in with "rough fish" but are native. They do need to be managed though. I don't believe a lot of people land them, much less keep them on hook and line fishing so they don't often fall victim to human predation while other fish species do.
      As far as preparing them for food, the meat on them is like chicken - seriously. The texture is not like fish. The taste is good. They're literal dinosaurs. Cleaning them is a bit tricky since your normal filet knife won't get through the armor.
      I clean them with a hatchet to take off the head and tail and then use poultry shears or tin snips to get through the armor. Either gut them and cook them with the armor on (it peels right off when done) Or open the armor up along the back and take out the back strap on the big ones - marinate and season as you would chicken and toss on the grill.

      Careful, one of the big factors for the flavour of carp is the temperature and turbidity of the water theyre caught in. The higher the temp and turbidity, the more "muddy" the carp will end up tasting, so if possible try to eat ones caught out of cold water!

    Dude idk what the laws are there on chumming for carp but if it's legal then the best way to do that is go to a grassy spots like u were doing and throw 2 or 3 cans of corn in the water. May take up to an hour but u will see hundreds of carp coming to the surface where the corn was thrown in. Spawning carp run together in groups and chasing each other so if u give them something they love to it then they will stay in that area for a long while. It's just like ur vids on fishing Hatcherys when they go crazy over the feed. Awesome vid as always

    We have a lot of carp in our river in Australia 🇦🇺 and we fish and take them out of the river some times keep to eat but most get turned in to fertiliser like a liquid called charlie carp or pet food, but the fisheries use a boat that they have poles on the front of the boat with electrodes that stun the fish then float to the top and then they use nets to scoop them up and put in big blue containers like what you have its great because not only is good for our native fish but good for the river because they do a lot of damage to the banks of the river by sucking the mud to get to the yabbies and that causes the bank to erode, so yeah big job all year round and we all play a part to get rid of them but they are a tough surviving fish but we are slowly winning, keep up the good work loved the video. 👍🏻🇦🇺

      Here in my town, you just have to set some traps and wait for them to come over the trap and get em done over. Nice and easy. Their lenghts are astounding, they're fat and juicy enough to be cooked. Guess the way they're arrowing the fishes are much more fun though. 😆

    Here in Utah there's a kill order on carp, I've always wanted to try eating it even though everyone, including some of the dnr officers I've spoken to claim they're a trash fish, now I'm set on cooking up the next one I catch lol

      Which carp? Common carp? Grass carp? Big head carp? These are common carp and not only are they not invasive but they are a popular game fish and it's a tragedy to see so many wasted

    This looks awesome, If you ever wanted to know what carp in australia tastes like, grab a handful of dirt and eat that and it tastes about the same. Most people just dump them on the river banks when they catch them as it's illegal to put them back.
