My father is a retired professional painter. He learned his trade back in Europe and completed a four year apprenticeship. He truly is a master of his trade. Anyway, he taught me that when you paint a ceiling the first coat is applied in vertical strokes and then the second coat coat is applied horizontal strokes, that way you end up with a perfect paint job and ceiling.
He also told me not to fall for "primer & paint in one". He says always apply primer, then paint and to always sand between coats for the perfect finish.

Few years ago I discovered if I used just a primer coat first, the paint came out looking nicer and I didn’t have to worry about stains bleeding through (for older homes/walls). Ever since then I always apply a primer coat before painting. Also for me it seemed to be better to use a primer then paint for drywall patches.

Just another tip as a painter, I have done drywall repairs some needing taping, personally I wouldn’t overlap the mesh tape. I also after the skim coat is completely dry I make great efforts in removing all sanding dust of the ceiling & walls, even quickly going over it with a damp lambs wool window cleaner, just a very quick light touch over the mud areas, I have done it many times, never an issue. I’ve seen too many paint jobs peel off because the dust wasn’t removed properly, especially if your rolling. Also use acrylic Matt finish paint for your ceilings not that cheap white wash crap, it will inhibit mould & be easy to clean.

The hard mud works well especially if you have a big gap or odd cutout or blowout to fill beforehand because it doesn't shrink and dries hard. That and small patches you want to get done quickly. A whole room you can use premixed. I work with drywallers and they use the All Purpose for the tape coat because it has a lot of glue in it and is heavier, then the Plus 3 for the subsequent coats because its lighter and sands easier. All Purpose for hand texture, Plus 3 if you're spraying with a hopper.

  • @glenlongstreet7

If you add some dawn type dishwashing liquid to durabond you can sand it. But it is easier to take it off when it is wet, it is easy to add more later as you said.

Yes very true, the true way to do a good tape and mud job is experiance, doing it over and over again, to where you litereally have a feel of it, to where you have that crisp spread and scrape sound and yes the less mud the better, do not want to be sanding a lot, and when sanding I do do the taper in method start on the edge of the dry mud and work it, it has takes me a few years to learn and actually move quick as well,

I'm really enjoying your videos-well done! We have a manufactured home that needs 2 bathrooms to be redone due to replacing the polybutylene pipe with new pex and a couple of wonky toilet flanges that I had to try to repair when we first bought the place. All of the pipes are in only 1 section of the 2 1/2 sections of the home so we're going from one end to the other in that section, catching the laundry room and kitchen in the process. It is a lot of work and it's been feeling like a little overwhelming to start, but taking it room by room, I guess we will get it done.

durabond is def for people that have experience in taping and mudding .... i've seen some DIY'ers use both the DURABOND and the topcoat and not understanding they won't sand the same way.

  • @diogopereira5288
    @diogopereira5288 3 ปีที่แล้ว

2 suggestions: instead of using durabond to paper tape the angles you can use joint compound, that way you dont have to rush or worry that it will set while you coat the flats/ butt joints.
Anytime you apply compound to an angle, flat, butt joint or bead before you make the final swipe, use the feathering technique that way once it dries you will have less sanding to do

I know it sets quickly, but isn't it better to put the water in before the powder so it doesn't stick to the bottom of the bucket as much?
Would it be bad to use the mesh tape or Fibafuse in the corners (I know it doesn't fold over like the paper)?
    It turned out very nice!
I'm working on my bathroom. Fixed the floor but need to replace or refinish my sink, fix a scrape on my tub, put up some purpleboard and new wall surround for the shower/tub, replace or repair my vent fan (it's a vent fan heater combo from the 70s). Got new shower valve, trim, tub spout, and showerhead to put in. Hopefully it will look as nice as your bathroom.

While I can plaster over a patch or a hole in the wall, the texturing is where I come up short. We had two guys work on our ceilings last summer, and while you can tell where one of them patched things up, that can't be said for the other guy. We're having him redo the first guy's work when we get into our projects this summer.
It's crazy - I know exactly where he made huge patches in our ceiling yet can't see them.

Problem is between dry wall and the wall there is a gap (in the ceiling) that I can't putty/mud in since it will fall off. I think I have to use tape in 45 degrees on both surfaces but I don't want to paint the ceramic tile wall.

Awesome explanation! Just wondering, how would you go about repairing a corner of a wall if your kid or pet left bite marks on it. Would you just spackle it, smooth it and paint it? How do you make sure the edge of the wall is straight? Can you just tape it and paint over it?

You can't pass inspection in California with purple drywall on the ceiling. I know it makes sense to use it in the bathroom since it is mold resisitant and all but they claim it is too brittle for ceilings. Inspector literally made me remove it in two bathroom ceilings and replace it with the fire X kind.
