  • On Location! THE ALAMO! THE SHOOTIST! Join John Wayne's 1st granddaughter, Anita La Cava Swift, as she shares memories of growing up with a legend. Find out what Duke was like off-screen, what happened during his last film, THE SHOOTIST, and how Duke wanted to continue helping in the fight to cure cancer even after he was gone! Anita was the first daughter of John Wayne's first daughter, Antonia (1936-2000). Anita joined Rob Word and a packed audience of Wayne fans at the Autry Museum for this interview, May 18, 2016, and remembers her grandfathers movies and his enduring love of family.

Wow. Never met john wayne or his family, but, my step dad was john wayne's ranch foreman in casa grande AZ until 1972 . Then we bought land in San tan AZ not far from casa grande and had our own Ranch. John Wayne use to give all the employees complete Holliday gifts of a ham and a turkey and all of the trimmings every Holliday at Christmas and thanksgiving. I have many stories from my step dad about john Wayne and his adventures and his private personal conversations with my step dad. Another awesome interview Rob. Thanks..

    I agree with Anita's 3 favorites.
I saw Bruce Dern talking about the Cowboys. It was the day before shooting Dern killing Wayne and the Duke said to him, "oh how they are going to hate you."
Dern replied, "Maybe, but in Berkley I'm a hero."
The Duke put his arm around Dern and said, while laughing, that's why Dern was hired.
Great movie one of the best.

@Michael Gerber I know it! It p*sses me off to no end too! How DARE they!! We ALL need to stand up & with a resounding & in unison voice say, “No! Your not renaming anything!” They have said some awful things about Maureen O’Hare too & we shld stand up against these defaming bullies! Ya know, Ive grown up hearing that, “Evil prevails when the GOOD do nothing.” Which I think is spot on correct. The fact is that the good in the recent past have dropped the ball & that has led us where we are today in America. Please let us start standing against these bullies who are trying to tear down our heritage & rip our Wonderful Country apart. We can only conquer it if we stand in UNISON & not just talk about it being such a shame but by doing something about it.
I was so glad when I heard that John’s son, Ethan showed up at a meeting to discuss the renaming of the airport. I know his Dad wld be proud of him.
Well, once again Rob, Thank You for an awesome show. Loved every minute of it. God bless! 👍

Another good interview, Anita is a great storyteller and what wonderful cherished memories she has of her iconic grandfather...
The John Wayne prized coffee mugs that he gave out to actors and crew, my long departed friend stuntman Chuck Hayward had over a dozen of them on his shelf, and he asked me if they were worth anything as he was in ill health at the time... I said you must be joking, of course they are!
In the ALAMO, Chuck was both a Mexican and a Tennessean, but you'll remember him for his spectacular somersault when Laurence Harvey shoots him off his horse, for which Chuck lost the hearing in one ear, but being a stuntman just chalks it up to being one of the hazards of his profession.
John Wayne's family is well known for their dedication to cancer research like so many other organizations and groups... But you wonder why after 100 years of research and billions spent, the fatality rate is so high when Dr. Royal Rife found the best and most proven treatment in 1934 with chemo-free sound vibration - Google him!
As for the Duke's cancer, despite having been a heavy smoker and drinker like so many, the case for him being out in that radioactive St. George Utah desert on the really ill-fated THE CONQUEROR, the case that so many cast and crew died, along with thousands of "downwinders" straight across to Chicago from the radiation of so many nuclear bomb tests... and to think that trucked over 100 tons of the radioactive sand back to HOLLYWOOD.
But the jaw-dropping irony that quite possibly the U.S. Government killed it's greatest patriot and hero... well it makes you think!
Very heartwarming and sad ending with the Johnny Crawford sing-along from five years ago...
Duke's fans should check out the fantastic remastered THE BIG TRAIL from 1930, shot in widescreen, which because very, very few theaters could show it that way, doomed its chances at the box-office... and doomed John Wayne to ten years in the salt-mines of cheap quickie westerns. The Raoul Walsh Fox Film Corporation epic production where Marion Morrison became John Wayne... watch it for free, its on TH-cam.

In so many ways and for so many decades, JW exemplified the GREATEST GENERATION, now nearly gone. Memories in tow, WE, the next-gen, are now up to bat... As a kid, my home was down the lane from his, my gf babysat for the Wayne family, my mother is buried nearby his unmarked plot. MEMORIES sustain us as we lace up our boots in celebration of this generational icon of TRUE GRIT...

@@AWordonWesterns Rob, I'm gonna' tell something that I probably only told my family! But, heck I'm almost 70 years young, nothing to be embarassed by.
"When I was a young man in 20's - 30's there are two occasions that stand-out always. First my Dad was a WWII Vet and fought though Korea as well. The Greatest Generation were a kind, loving but to some hard, seemingly insensitive to death. They had seen so much they "held fast" when talking about it.
I was at work on two occasions. My Dad called me at work which he never did! First time he said, "I want you to be strong and take it easy, but Nana passed away, (my Grandmother)"! That hurt! The second time was to tell me John Wayne had died! That was like losing another a family member"!
Young folks may not get it. But the Duke was in everyone's household! That one reason his memory is still imbedded in people's mind! We also have to remember all the great actors from the Duke Era. Some were not in westerns. However, the "Golden Years" of Hollywood cannot be replicated by Stars today! The old names, were just truly believable on the Silver Screen!
      Very best to ya',,,,!

Thanks Rob and Anita. John made so many movies all the way from 1930 through the 70s westerns and non westerns that were so good can’t know how many times I have seen Big Jake lol
Couple of favorites for me Iland in the Sky and
The Sea Chase just fascinating pictures

Westerns for now are timeless. Which means the man most closely identified with them, John Wayne is as well.
If that changes and they're allowed to fade from living memory, you'll know the county's gone too.

Gotta believe there is a good half hour cut of this interview somewhere. Would love to see it.
John Wayne and Clint Eastwood were the two stars my dad loved to watch so they were on our TV often.
3 Wayne movies I will always stop and watch, no matter what point it was:
    Fort Apache
    In Harms Way
    El Dorado
