Building a Rabbit Colony

  • For most winters, our rabbit set up included wire cages and bedding underneath to catch the droppings. Last year we tried a "rabbit colony", and this year I think we are going all in with the set-up. It allows the rabbits to have exercise, solid ground to hop on, and nice deep bedding do provide warmth. And, it makes chores a little easier!

    This interests me, as we have done rabbits in hutches only. Its hard to describe but I have experience in R&D in the poultry business (think corporate farms) and took a concept from the layer barns to use in my rabbitry. I built my own cages with a tiered system that allowed for waste to drop through the cage floor and roll to the front/back where it dropped to the ground. The bottom cages just fell straight down. It worked well but winters (northeast Indiana) were rough as the waste froze and had to be scraped. And then over time the waste would build up and even in mild or warm weather obstructions would form. It just wasn't the best, but it still works for the amount of rabbits we have now (considerably less). I've always wanted to do a colony, so I guess I'll watch your success and live vicariously through you! Ha. Keep up the great videos - always enjoyed. Cheers, Mark

      I have seen some plans like what you are talking about. Seems like a good idea for an indoor rabbitry! We were pretty successful with this last year and I like the fact that they can hop around ;) I also think that it is a bit warmer with them have solid ground and deep bedded. I'll be sure to keep updating! Thanks for watching :0

    I love the idea of animals in non confined spaces. They look real comfortable. A late Happy 10th Birthday!!

    I am on my second iteration of my free range rabbits. 8 months ago I couldn't keep up with watering/feeding my rabbits so I let them loose. Within 3 months I went from 6 to approx 30 running around my yard and those of my neighbors (they don't mind).
    We recently moved in with my inlaws as we are in between homes until we build, I caught 6 and transplanted them at my inlaws. So far so good.

      You shouldn't have let them rabbits go free, domestic rabbits descend from European rabbits so they've either interbred with the north American Rabbits in your area or they all died from diseases from native rabbits

      Wow, it seems like when our neighbor tried to "free range" his rabbits they didn't last as long!

    I'm building a subdivision with tubes underground running from hutch to hutch. Everyone does it differently. :) I'll be following your rabbit colony progress.

      That’s pretty interesting! I’ve never heard of anything like that. Our colony is just for the winter, and then they’ll be moved out to the pasture pens that are moved daily.

      @@TheBeginningFarmer I hadn't seen it either but I suppose the bunnies will be happy which will make me happy. And it'll be fun to watch in the meantime. You know, a good life with one bad day is the goal. :)

    You are pretty optimistic about spring coming! I don’t count in spring until mid-April, and I’m not that far north of you!

    • @TheBeginningFarmer
      @TheBeginningFarmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha :) I did realize I was being pretty ... overly-optimistic ... I guess I was just ready for spring at that moment! It will be in the 40's this week, which should take care of a lot of our snow. Of course then I'll just be thinking about spring even more ... although there is still plenty of January and all of February!

    I’ve been wanting a “rabbit shed” for a while I have had a cages setup my entire child hood and would live to switch to a controlled colony, but idk if it’s safe where I live.

      We have Champagne d' Argents. They have worked out well for us once we worked through some tough culling in order to get rabbits that fit well in our system.

    Where do you get your rabbits processed?

    • @TheBeginningFarmer
      @TheBeginningFarmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is one inspected processor in the State. Green Hill Products I believe is the name. He only does small batches and I’m not sure how much longer he’ll be doing it. It is just a good project for the kids at this point, not really a viable farm enterprise because there is no possibility of scaling up with the processing limitations.
