  • Career Retrospective with Rami Malek, currently starring in BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. Moderated by Stacey Wilson Hunt.
RAMI MALEK is the star of the USA Network’s critically acclaimed psychological drama Mr. Robot, for which he received an Emmy® and Critics Choice Award, as well as nominations for Golden Globes®, SAG, People’s Choice, and Television Critics Association Awards. He currently stars as Freddie Mercury in FOX's BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY.
Malek most recently starred in the remake of Papillon, opposite Charlie Hunnam. The remake of the 1973 Steve McQueen film is directed by Michael Noer, and Malek plays the role of Louis Dega, originated by Dustin Hoffman. Malek will next lend his voice to the upcoming live action film The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, alongside Robert Downey Jr., and will produce and star in Universal’s upcoming film American Radical, which Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail will direct and produce.
In 2017, Malek starred in Buster's Mal Heart, a surreal mystery film written and directed by Sarah Adina Smith, featured at both the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and 2017 Tribeca Film Festival.
In 2012, Malek was featured in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams. He also notably appeared in the HBO miniseries The Pacific as "Snafu." His performance garnered incredible reviews and led him to being cast by Tom Hanks in Larry Crowne at Universal and Bill Condon in the last installment of the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn. Prior to that, Malek was seen in Night At The Museum 1 & 2 opposite Ben Stiller, which marked his big screen debut and had a memorable arc on the FOX television series 24.
In 2014, Malek appeared in the DreamWorks feature Need For Speed, directed by Scott Waugh, as well as the third installment of Night At The Museum. He was also featured in Spike Lee’s Old Boy opposite Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen, and starred in Short Term 12 with Brie Larson, directed by Destin Cretton.

@@ftiland Does it speak to the excellence of his character that he remembers the names of everyone who helps him or to the detriment of the majority of other people who are often so self centered that they never bother to ask other people's name when they meet let alone remember their name?

What really impresses me is he remembers ALL the names! AND he credits every single person who has helped him on his way. His high school debate teacher, high school drama teacher, his accent coach, everyone. That is so important I think, probably part of why he made it this far and why so many of the people he worked with give him such high priase. Habits like that is what makes all the difference.

It's really impressing! He always remember that all the works were collectively made, not taking all glories for himself. And I love the calm way he speaks, specially because I can understand almost all words by first time (since English is not my mother tongue). His voice is mesmerising also. Great actor, fenomenal human being.

SAM ESMAIL'S COMMENTS ON CASTING RAMI IN MR. ROBOT:
"So here’s the thing. We auditioned, I’d say, over a hundred guys. And I thought we were in real trouble. I actually was contemplating just not doing the show, because we weren’t finding the right guy. And by the way, the guys that were coming in were great, I mean really good actors, they came in and had an interesting take, but none of it felt right, and I thought we were kind of done. And then Rami came in and he totally transformed the character.
How so? What was it about him?
Well, he added the warmth. The thing that I kept fearing about the whole [thing] - look, a guy who’s going to rant and rave about society and how it needs to change, and who has mental illness and is a drug addict? There are all these things to not like about this person and not want to spend time with this person, more than anything. It takes a really precise take on that to add that warmth, to add that, “Wait a minute, this is all happening because he’s in a lot of pain.” And there’s a forgiveness that you can have as an audience member when someone performs it like that. But that is such a fine target to hit.
    Yeah, he does it beautifully.
And not only does he hit it, he’s not trying. It’s effortless. And when I saw that, I was like, “Whoa, wait a minute, not only can he do this, but I can add things and layers and complexities to it and push him in moral boundaries, and he’s going to be able to pull it off because he’s got that center.”

I started watching this and saw that it was almost an hour an a half long. I told myself that I would just watch the first couple of minutes, but here I am an 90 minutes later and Rami Malek has left me speechless.
He’s just so well spoken and humble, and incredibly classy and knowledgeable. He knows he deserves this, yet he never takes anything for granted. I don’t think I’ve ever came across an actor who took the time to memorize the full names of everyone he works with.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone who remembers and recounts on-set details so vividly.
I love how he isn’t afraid to show how vulnerable he is. He’s so far away from the toxic masculinity we expect from most male straight actors.
He’s won me over, and I want to see him win that Oscar. Bradley Cooper did a good job, but Rami DESERVES this more than anyone.

    • @karenschreiber5455

I couldn't agree more! I thought I was attracted because of his good looks but after seeing at least 50 interviews I found out that he's very consistent. Such an intelligent man and a brilliant actor! Very humble and grateful. It also amazes me that he can remember everyone he has worked with. He did a low budget indie film called Buster's Mal Heart while he's in Mr. Robot. It only shows that as an actor he's very greedy and hungry. He wants to explore and takes each role seriously. Oh God, I can continue for miles.... he's just adorable! Thank you for this comment! I thought I was the only one.

He was holding back tears when he talked about how he wonders if this was the life Freddie's parents ever imagined he would have and then relating that to his own parents and how they feel about him. He has such an expressive face, you can see every thought that is going through his mind. He has always spoken about Freddie with such respect, awe and positivity. He seems to have a deep connection with Freddie despite never having met him. I like Sacha Baron but thank god they didn't go with his cliched version of who everyone thought Freddie was. I prefer this version because it is backed up by people who actually knew him like his sister, bandmates, etc. Rami did him complete justice. He's a sweet soul and a brilliant actor! He needs to be in more movies, I'm sick of seeing the same 5 actors in every other movie nowadays.

At 62 I am beginning a change of direction, though still creating things... and I thank Mr Rami for sharing with us that to succeed, it's to give it your all, prepare in every way you can, pull people in to help guide you and practice like you mean it, to get the results that let your purpose shine.
What a great guy who appreciates every one else and his hard work to get where he is today.

This is the best interview I have seen for Rami. He is so interesting and watchable. He constantly is in motion and his face is so expressive. He is a wonderful storyteller. I am so pulling for him to win the Best Actor Oscar this year. He was so brave to take that role. It could have been a career ender if he did not pull it off. Thankfully he pulled it off and more. What an incredible performance. I grew up with the music of Queen and loved Freddie Mercury. I thought I would have a hard time buying an actor trying to be him. Within the first half hour I forgot what Rami looked like and only saw Freddie. He totally let Freddie inhabit him. Bravo Rami!!!

"Tenacious" and "haunting" seem to be some of the adjectives this beautiful human being so very well deserves. The last message he shared is so inspiring, not only his words but the passion he puts in them everytime touches my soul. I feel I could listen to him talk for hours and hours about his experiences and lessons he's learned in life and, as the interviewer said, it could never be enough.
He doesn't take lightly everything he's achieved because he knows how hard it's been to stand where he is now. His parents must definitely be very proud of him and his siblings.

1:20:35 I know he was talking about the struggles of being an actor, but I really needed to hear that. I am currently in a horrific low point where I can't find a job, I am trying to get into a master's program for social work (and then a ph.d. program for clinical psych), and i am dealing with a severe bout of depression. What he said will stay with me, and help me keep pushing forward everyday, because i want to become a psychologist, i want to help kids and teens struggling, and i want to make this world a little bit brighter for as many struggling souls. He is right - it is written into your DNA, your passion in life, and I will not let anything stop me, even if it takes me years to get to the next stage in my career. Thanks Rami!

had same feelings, he is just so vulnerable and articulate, yet not posed or pretentious at the same time, i'm totally looking up to such people (irish musician Hozier is another old soul i love listening to) and hearing them speak and telling their life story is ten times more inspiring than some stupid couch talks and books on self improvement, cause this is just real, sure Rami's or Freddy's stories of such success are one in a million or even less but at least it gives us the ordinary people hope we can find some happiness in our lives if we only take the chances and work for it instead of idly waiting for it to happen, that maybe whole life doesn't have to be an utter misery

His voice is intoxicating. He is intoxicating. He is so beautiful. And to be honest I recently became a fan of Rami's after binging Mr. Robot.
I knew he existed before than but watching him in that show and seeing him as Freddie Mercury I have become smitten with him.
So this interview was amazing to watch. It was seeing him as him and hearing his story in his own words.
    Beautiful!

What I love the most of him is that he didn't get to be a famous actor just on one day... he started from nothing and had to work for years and years to get were he is now, that's probably why he is so down to earth and there's some people out there that wants to get things done now and if not, they feel frustration but hey! look at Rami! Maybe you would get a lot of "NO" before your first "YES" but don't worry about it and keep fighting... I think that's a beautiful lesson we can learn from him (and it's something he has in common with Freddie Mercury) :)

Like Freddie. So thank you, rami, for being who you are. Special and great! Renata

What Rami explained the heavy Marine training with the “surprise Japanese attack”, is as close as anyone can get to what, without being actually in combat, our Soldiers/Marines/Navy/Air Force have gone through. The Marine Trainers gave them a real “boot camp” experience. With the planning of a secret surprise Japanese attack, Rami, Joe and the other actor Marines WERE living as real Marines during WWII. Great interview.

It’s 3am and I wasn’t planning on watching 80 minutes of interview footage but I just couldn’t stop! There’s something so mesmerising about him and watching this was like watching an emotional roller coaster of a movie in itself! I don’t know whether it’s that he seems so genuine and down to earth or the fact that he is so passionate about the characters/people that he plays but it’s amazing. The way he brought Freddie Mercury to life (and especially to a new generation like me that weren’t alive to experience it first hand) is unbelievable and I’d be shocked if he didn’t get an Oscar for it. I’ve always loved him but hearing the stories about his struggles early on in life trying to make it as an actor, make me so happy for him that he’s getting the recognition he deserves! Thanks very much for uploading this!

Rami Said Malek.. what a beautiful name that really reflects him as a person. In arabic, Rami means 'loving' and Said means 'happy/happiness'. Even his surname means 'King/King of All' (it could be written as Malek or Malik). Thumbs up to his parents. They've done a great job raising him to be the person he is today.

Rami is just such an incredible human being. Watching him talk for almost 90 minutes is just a gift for this day. But mostly the part of him talking about Freddie. At first it's like Freddie talks through him, as if it's Freddie for a moment. You can even see Rami sort of wake up from that. That gave me goosebumps! But maybe more is the part where he gets emotional talking about Freddie, about the movie, about his own life. It's been so clear through other interviews that Freddie is so special to Rami, but this interview makes it even more clear. It's just so... Wow!! I don't even know the right words to use. But it's something. Something so special and so wonderful and.. I don't know. It's incredible. Seeing an actor care so much for the person he portrait. Caring for that person in so many ways. Its just the best thing and it only makes me love Rami more and more.

I'm so moved by his humanity, his insight, intelligence, commitment and sweetness as a human being. And you know, I think that's what he was trying to capture (and he did, brilliantly) in his revealing Freddie to us. There's a moment, late in the film, when Rami as Freddie looks at his (hopefully) new friend, and simply says, "I like you." In that moment he so movingly shows us Freddie's vulnerability and delicacy of heart (unlike his confident performing persona) that it brings tears to my eyes. Rami, I'm sure you'll never read this, but since this wacky awards season is upon us, I'd like to say I hope you win everything! You've certainly already won our hearts.
