The reasoning for 30 grams within 30 minutes as far as I can tell, is that it functions as a basic mnemonic for non-fitness buffs to remember these things. 30 grams, 30 minutes. Easy to remember, and easy to execute. He showcases several meals from people in his studies that consume 2-3 eggs and a load of veggies. That's at MOST 18g protein (6g/egg if large ones), and more likely around 10-11g. So the idea is more than some is better than none, and 30 is easiest to remember and most ideal.
Dump the canola. Use virgin coconut oil to cook with. Low melt temp, high nutritional value. Good for oil pulling (cleaning the teeth), and excellent for hair.
Sometimes I get asked a question here in the comments section and there is no way for me to reply (no reply button offered). Apparently TH-cam is in the process of fixing this, however, if you re-ask the question here (versus over at Google+) I will be able to respond.

While we're on the subject, let's talk a little about the use of such things as celery salt. Today, most manufacturers of "nitrite free" brands add celery salt, which is about 50% nitrate, plus a started culture of bacteria. This transforms the nitrate found naturally in the celery salt into nitrite, which cures the meat. Although manufacturers label this bacon "nitrite free," this method actually generates more nitrite from the celery salt than would ever be added as a salt.
I don't think Tim Ferriss would ever ask people to "do it, don't ask" as that's really what he is all about. The thinking behind the 30g within 30-60 min. of waking is that it jump starts your metabolism. Your body has been in a state of fasting all night, and thus, your metabolism is slowed down. By feeding your body within that first hour, you are essentially waking up your metabolism as well.
@shakaama I bought it at the restaurant supply store. It's basically a little camp type stove that is okay for indoor use. They're actually pretty inexpensive.
There are a few replacements for a vegetarian. You can simply eat more eggs, however, this gets to be a lot of eggs. You can substitute soy, however, soy contains phytoestrogen and consuming large quantities of soy is not healthy. Tempeh, is a fermented soy product that is a better choice nutritionally, however, it is difficult taste-wise. Your best bet would be to have a small side dish of cottage cheese sprinkled with some cinnamon.
Thanks for the answer. But I wonder now, why is protein most efficient for it, is 30g the best number for any weight and wouldnt a jump start not also work with a cold shower or excercise so that one could save those calories or shift them to a later point of the day?
@sigmiami The link didn't work for me. If you're going to keep the milk then I'd highly recommend going with raw milk if you can get it. Hope your weight loss goes well!
I saute the cut up sausage meat in a tiny bit of olive oil and then scramble the eggs on top. I dont like it boiled like that, but I am a very picky eater ha! Good video!
Learning to feed ourselves in a healthful and nourishing manner is an ongoing process, as we all are continually being inundated with contrary choices and information. Instead of being critical, one might choose to educate.
It depends on how you want to spread your calories out. I usually recommend getting the largest amount of calories in at breakfast and slowly tapering off during the day. However, if you say, go to the gym after work, then you will need to adjust that.
Since posting this video I've quit using canola oil and basically all oils (vegetable, nut and seed) other than coconut and olive oil. In fact I wrote an article for Food Renegade entitled "Why Canola Oil is NOT a Healthy Food." Thanks for your comment!
what is this little gas stove thing you have? oh and never use canola oil, i'm shocked you actually use that, you were doing so well with great advice on the nitrates and nitrites.
@sigmiami - Of course, I should have noticed. You'll reach your goal doing that much exercise. I started kettlebell training along with doing the 30 grams of protein when I first started. I didn't lose anything as far as weight goes b/c I was gaining muscle. Like you said, the measuring tape is the way to go. If you do decide to forgo the milk for a week I'd be interested to hear if it makes any difference. Keep us posted!
I agree that my generalized comment regarding nitrites could have held much more information. Since making this video I have done a lot more research regarding nitrates and nitrites, and the truth is that the traditional way in which sodium nitrite was used did not produce carcinogenic nitrosamines, but instead healthy nitrous oxide. Supermarket bacon/sausage may also use sodium nitrite, but not in the traditional way. read the next reply as I am running out of allowable characters.
First of all, thanks for this recipe it look delicious! I just have one question, why not use the macadamia oil to cook the eggs? (I've never used macadamia oil before)
+Priscila Edith Vázquez Medrano - You can use macadamia oil to cook the eggs. It's just expensive, so I drizzle to make sure I'm not leaving any in the pan!
Thanks for the video- that looks delicious! We were just wondering where you got that awesome plate/bowl. We're minimalists and always looking for more versatility. Thanks.
12 years later........Are you still on this diet? If so, how many meals do you eat per day and how much protein per meal? Also, do you have a cheat day as he suggests? Thanks in advance.
That’s a great question @joecrowder8893 ! I have to say that I do still try to get 20 grams of protein (at a minimum) per meal. However, I do not have a cheat day. I do keep carbs to a minimum, but not too low. I eat three meals per day and try to quit eating by 7pm and start eating no earlier than 7am.
thanks for the breakfast idea :~) i must say not only am I impressed with your passion for informing people (for free!) on youtube on nutrition, I am also impressed by your dignity in replying to comments. some of the ones ive seen below are either deliberately critical with little argument on their side or just plain ignorant. i would have no patience for some youtube responders...
When a food is cooked water may evaporate, fat may ooze out and sit in the bottom of the pan, and there may be a loss of mineral and vitamin content, however the actual protein is not lost. Eat another sausage if it makes you happy.
Don't use canola oil substitute olive oil or higher temp rice bran oil. High protein is definitely the way to start the day, but it looks like a lot of prep and cooking early in the morning. I wished she would have shown how to make it in advance for a week. Curious why she's worried about glass shards? Is she against using tempered glass.
Look under "4 hour body corrections, competitions, winners, slow carb mistakes" on Tim's Four Hour Work Week blog (sorry, it won't let me link directly)
Its a nice diet... if you can afford and and you're not pressed for time in the morning...Even the shake video is quite expensive and takes a long while to make
You are getting metal in the food by using the stainless steel container and fork also altering the state of the food by introducing more heavy metals. Unless you are using an already chipped glass bowl, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. If you really want to be safe, use wood. Oh no, splinters.
hi. for the vegetables, can it be zucchini or green beans ( 1 cup ?) ? And for topping the eggs is it ok using sour cream or butter ? How much beans did you use ? thanks
I am reading the book but I just cant find the explanation why 30g protein withtin 30min after waking is working? Is it just "do it dont ask" or is there a explanation? At least I cant find it in the book.
I could not train for 3 weeks due to a back injury, and i wanted a way to not gain weight in that time because i did not have a structured eating plan. In three weeks of slow carbing i lost 4kg and 2.5% bodyfat.
I'd recommend checking out the "Geek to Freak" chapter on this, as he states explicitly that 30 grams isn't a limit that's backed by science, and one can get as much benefit from consuming the majority of daily protein in one go.
@sigmiami - I would say that's too much protein. I'd for sure cut out the glass of milk. If you're following the 4 hour body diet then milk isn't allowed. If you're not, then it would be an easy thing to cut, plus, you could save it for a snack later in the day. In general you want to have no more than 1 gram of protein per lb of body weight- and that can even be too much. I'd replace some of that protein with healthy fat, and a few carbs in the form of veggies and legumes.
Tim seems to stick with the 30 grams of protein for any weight. My opinion is that 30 grams is a good starting place b/c you are so full that you can't possibly think of another bite for hours! That being said, that is a lot of protein for one's liver to always be dealing with. A female w/a petite frame would be overdoing it at 30 grams, while a large boned man would be just fine. There is a lot of good discussion/information surrounding this diet in the comments section of Tim's blog. see below
I like the idea of this meal, and I've been eating like this for the last month (high protein, low/slow carb) but my body doesn't seem to be responding and I'm thinking it's because of the fat. I look at this meal and I think sausage, eggs, beans, oil, avocado... that's a LOT of fat, even if it's healthy fat! Is it possible that some people are more sensitive to fat than others, and would benefit from a higher carb:fat ratio?
+KEJ86 you dont need so much protein to lose fat. This meal is mostly for those who lift weights. 2 whole eggs, a chopped slice of turkey and a slice of brown bread are enough for a breakfast. And for a drink....just drink water. 2 glasses just to full your stomach.
For a quicker option try my 30 grams of protein 4-hour body breakfast smoothie. It's an easy way to get 30 grams of protein in a short amount of time. There's a link at the end of this video.
3 eggs: 21g protein and 15g fat. 2 sausages: 15g protein and probably 10g fat because its with the skin. 1 serving of beans: 12g protein, 24g carbs, and 1g fat And + u put so much oil... thats another 10g of fat... Ur breakfast was 48g protein, 24g carbs, and 36g fat. And thats definitely more than 30g of protein...
To JillAnderson- When it comes to protein powder there is a ton of controversy out there. So do your research and figure out if it's something you want to ingest, and if so what kind. I'm simply telling people what products I use (which BTW, I misspoke in the video- the protein pwdr I'm using here is actually an isolate, not a concentrate). And yes, I agree that people "should not do as I say." Clearly, eating things like fresh chard, beans and avocado for breakfast are horrendously unhealthy.
The part that got cut off below is that if these plates slide back for any reason you won't be able to turn the pages on Tim's next book! Safety first people!!
Looks delicious. Thanks. Canola oil is rapeseed oil, which is a machine oil. There was a big PR campaign by the rapeseed oil industry to make it seem healthy, but it was never for human consumption. Look into it.
@EvoExpress- Minger has the same scientific background as Campbell. She spent over a year going over all of the research he used to write The China Study. BTW, I am a proud member of the WAPF and subscribe to Mark Sisson. You'll also find a copy of Robb Wolf's, The Paleo Solution on my shelf. So I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Good day.
Does it matter if you go over 30 grams of protein in the morning? I eat a turkey burger which has 35g of protein and 2 eggs with a glass of milk; that's about 57 or so grams of protein...
@EvoExpress Just so you get both sides of the story you may want to read Denise Minger of RawfoodSOS (dot com) response to the China Study it's very enlightening. Also, the Weston A. Price Foundation (dot org) is a good place to read up on the benefits of a high fat/high protein diet.
If you'd like to know more I highly recommend going to the Naughty Nutritionist, Kaayla Daniels and reading up on her articles about bacon. Also the Weston A Price Foundation is a fabulous resource as well. In closing, the absolute best and safest choice you can make is to get your cured meats from pastured animals that have been cured using traditional methods.
@shakaama I'm really glad you mentioned the canola oil... I forgot that I use canola oil in this video. I recently have converted to coconut oil, grass fed butter or ghee, and home rendered lard and tallow. That being said, I'm always about making health do-able and affordable. If someone goes to the grocery store, or even the food bank, and has a choice between corn oil and canola, I'd still rather they chose canola. In the future though, you will not see me using canola oil!
@animejoao that's gonna be like 5 eggs! dunno about you but i def. couldn't do that every morning. you're better off (according to Tim Ferriss) just having a whey protein shake, nice and simple. you could add some veggies/nuts to it or even some greens powder
@healthnutnation Thanks for your input and your video - I use the milk more often than not as a muscle recovery drink which is well documented to be better the protein shakes and sports drinks and I'm only following two of the principles of the 4 hour diet he claims alone help you loose weight - we will see how it goes for me.
@sigmiami It only works if you follow it 100%. There can't be any shortcuts or things you keep in the plan since it will reduce the effectiveness of the weight-loss. So of course 2lbs means they/you aren't following it correctly.
This is hard for me to do because of my schedule I get up to open the gym at 4am to 7am and I don't exactly want to eat that early in the morning til I leave then I grab breakfast. I just have ice water and my keto coffee holds me over.
@sigmiami "burger" which includes the buns? which isn't allowed as it contains white carbs. The idea of any "diet" is to create a *BALANCE* the problem most people have is their meals isn't balanced. It's what you eat that counts, so like healthnutnation said, add legumes/veggies to that morning meal.
Wirechoke- Check out the Weston A. Price Foundation, Robb Wolf, The Primal Blueprint, and Dr. Joe Mercola for more information on high fat/ high protein diets. We've been told for so many decades that lowfat is the way to go but I'm tellin' ya, 'fat is where it's at.' Check out my website, healthnutnation, for more information as well.
A curiosity...many folks view Canola oil as undesirable. Why do you choose to use it? Here is an article that explicates the "refining" process for Canola Oil. (authoritynutrition.com/canola-oil-good-or-bad/) Article claims 90% of Rapeseed is Genetically Modified by Monsanto(which immediately eliminates it for me). It further claims that most Canola is made via the "Industrial" method of a Hexane(toxic) wash, but even the cold-pressed kind of Canola is a no go for me(again, NO GMO). Why not use the Macadamia Nut Oil instead, or Olive oil or Pasture raised Butter? Cheers!
That article is absolutely correct. I made this video a number of years ago, before I knew how exceptionally horrible canola oil (and most processed oil) is for your health. I now recommend coconut oil, lard, butter, tallow, chicken fat, and as a last resort, avocado oil.
Instead manufacturers opt for fast and cheap methods by which inferior quality factory-farmed meat is pumped and plumped with a liquid cure solution that includes sodium erthrobate and sodium nitrite, along with "liquid smoke," spices and flavorings heavy in MSG. "Liquid Smoke" btw, is being investigated by the European Food safety Authority for safety as a food flavoring b/c of evidence of genotoxicity and cytotoxicity. with one study suggesting it is more toxic than cigarette smoke!

I've never timed it, as I'm usually making school lunches at the same time. I'd say it's under 20 minutes for sure.
Thanks for the video- that looks delicious! We were just wondering where you got that awesome plate/bowl. We're minimalists and always looking for more versatility. Thanks.
Hmm, it's been awhile, but I think I either purchased it from Cost Plus World Market or TJ Maxx. They really are useful!
Thanks!
@demonprince70 Thanks! It's Brookfarm Premium Grade macadamia oil from Australia. I buy it at my local food co-op (PCC if you're in the Seattle area).
Yeah, they are. This was one of my first videos. I've gotten better at "curb appeal" since then. Just cook them how you like them.

@healthnutnation can you tell me the brand of your macadamia nut oil and where you buy it ? thanks for the vids.
what if i told you eating eggs makes you not a vegetarian? which part of the egg is the vegetable?

I always split the sausage to ensure the insides are cooked.
@healthnutnation will do..Keep the recipes coming as I suck at cooking but have no other choice :) thanks again...
3 eggs: 21g protein and 15g fat.
2 sausages: 15g protein and probably 10g fat because its with the skin.

why is it that you dont no longer recommend the canola oil for cooking?
I wrote an entire article to answer that question: www.healthnutnation.com/2014/11/07/why-canola-oil-is-bad-for-your-health/
Where in the world do you get macadamia nut oil?

I recently have converted to coconut oil, grass fed butter or ghee, and home rendered lard and tallow. That being said, I'm always about making health do-able and affordable. If someone goes to the grocery store, or even the food bank, and has a choice between corn oil and canola, I'd still rather they chose canola. In the future though, you will not see me using canola oil!
Thank you for your recipe! 😋👍
Oh holy crap. You lost me at the glass shards, give me a break.
@sigmiami It only works if you follow it 100%. There can't be any shortcuts or things you keep in the plan since it will reduce the effectiveness of the weight-loss. So of course 2lbs means they/you aren't following it correctly.
Thank you for this helpful tip! I'm going to try the chicken sausage sometime!
This is hard for me to do because of my schedule I get up to open the gym at 4am to 7am and I don't exactly want to eat that early in the morning til I leave then I grab breakfast. I just have ice water and my keto coffee holds me over.
+Mende D Yes- that's early to eat a big heavy breakfast. Maybe a smoothie with your coffee in it?
+HealthNutNation I do a version of Bulletproof coffee with kerrygold butter and MCT oil with some heavy cream powder
If you get up at 4 AM… You should have your own TH-cam channel. I'd watch it.
Excellent.
Even Macademia nut oil?
Also, doesn't the 4HB have bad things to say about Olive oil?
Great video..thanks, looks very tasty ;-)
@healthnutnation OK thanks. I'll check next time im there.
@EvoExpress i agree
eggs look too cooked- couldnt you cook the spinach, sausage separately? also this could use a pinch of fresh minced garlic no?
Looking at her make breakfast just made me hungry.
Great Video! Thanks so much for posting!
As do I. Great video, BTW. Thanx for the quick reply. cheers!
thank you for posting.. will try this this week :)
Great clip...Than you for helping people that want to make abetter life.
love the video GREAT JOB ( and Great breakfast it was wonderful had one myself) :)
80% of nitrates you ingest are from fruits and veggies.
but what if I broke the bottle neck of my beer and I only have 5 left?
@animejoao Sounds good only try other forms of protein so that you can watch out for mercury build up in your system.:-)
Where do I get one of those gas cookers?
Instead manufacturers opt for fast and cheap methods by which inferior quality factory-farmed meat is pumped and plumped with a liquid cure solution that includes sodium erthrobate and sodium nitrite, along with "liquid smoke," spices and flavorings heavy in MSG. "Liquid Smoke" btw, is being investigated by the European Food safety Authority for safety as a food flavoring b/c of evidence of genotoxicity and cytotoxicity. with one study suggesting it is more toxic than cigarette smoke!
