I bought a new Dodge Charger Daytona in 1977 that was equipped with the HORRIBLE Firestone 500 radials. I would go out in the morning to go to work and would have a flat tire. Took it to Dodge who checked it out and said the rim was fine, the bead on the tire just let go (they were just beginning to see a disturbing pattern) and went to Firestone who told me the bead was fine, the Chrysler Rally wheels were to blame. The final straw was when I was coming back to my base from Montreal and had the bead fail while I was going better than 85 and fortunately, I managed to go into a field instead of hitting a pole. I changed the tire in minus 20 degree weather and made it home (a lot slower, I should add) and the next morning went right to Firestone and had a HUGE fight with the manager. I was so disgusted that I went to BF Goodrich and got a new set of tires on a car with less than 7,000 miles on it (and on my airman's pay, put a huge dent in my budget.) The store manager took me behind the shop and showed me a HEAPING pile of Firestone 500 radials. Firestone finally issued a recall but would NOT pay for tires from another manufacturer but would replace them with Firestone "721" radials. This came 4 months AFTER I had already replaced those junk tires. I will NEVER put another Firestone tire on any of my cars. A few years later when I ordered a new car I specified NO FIRESTONE TIRES. PERIOD. And sure enough when it arrived, there were 5 new Firestone tires on the car and I refused to take delivery until they changed them out with BF Goodrich tires.

I was working at a Ford dealer back in 2000, the only issue was they were putting the tire PSI at 25, way to low, and the sidewalls were blowing out overtime, there was nothing wrong with the suspension or the tires. recall came out and all we did was make new door stickers saying 30PSI (they needed to be 35PSI in reality) but even with tires set at 30PSI, no more issues.

Around 2015, it was discovered that some Jeep models had fuel tanks that could rupture like those on the Ford Pinto. I don’t know what ultimately happened, but at one point, Chrysler was trying to convince the Feds that installing trailer hitches on the affected models would solve the problem. Chrysler engineers said the hitches would strengthen the back end of the vehicle and help to protect the tank in a rear end collision. Amazingly, Ford engineers developed a fix for the Pinto before the car went on sale. Management vetoed the fix because it would have cost around $10 per car to implement. If management had listened to the engineers, neither the Challenger Space Shuttle nor the Ford Pinto would have had been prone to exploding.

I was scared shitless to drive my ‘07 Honda Civic.
I remember the airbag light on my dashboard turning on, and I called my local dealer to ask them to reset it.
While I was on the phone, the Takata scandal was on my mind, and I asked if my VIN was in their system for a recall?
The guy said “Nope. Your VIN isn’t in the system for needing an airbag replacement. You’re good to go.”
Literally 3 weeks later; and only 1 week after I got the car back from getting the dashboard airbag light reset, I got the Takata airbag recall card in the mail.
I saw red. I was livid beyond belief.
Either Honda was gradually trying to tackle the airbag problems in batches of cars so the dealers weren’t overwhelmed, or the fucker on the phone was lying to me.
If he had at least been somewhat honest and said: “Look, Honda is going thru this and is sending out Recall notice cards, it might be some more time before yours gets taken in, but I believe you can expect to get one. Keep in touch with us to see and check your mail for any notification.”
I wouldn’t have been mad. I would’ve at least been patient and tried to avoid driving my Civic in the meantime.

Interestingly the GM ignition switch issue has similar characteristics to a Ford issue from the 70s. Ford automatic transmissions at that time, going back over 20 years, had detent springs (which keep the shifter in a certain position) that were too weak, allowing the transmissions to slip out of park into reverse similar to how the GM switch would slip from run to accessory. In Ford's case, they got away with mailing a sticker to owners telling them to "make sure it's in park and set the parking brake" rather than recall the faulty transmissions.
In both cases the actual faulty part costs a few cents to make, though in Ford's case the part was inside the transmission. A full recall would have sunk the company.

Another big problem with the Ford Explorer and several other American Ford, Mercury and Lincoln models of the 80:s and 90:s was that the cruise control would take over and give full throttle even if it was not switched on in the first place, the reason behind this, was that the cruise control in these Fords, unlike other cars, was getting power as soon as you turned on the engine, unlike other cars, where the cc only gets power when you switch it on using the button, this has caused several fatal accidents and near misses in both America and Europe, sadly Ford, just like the ture scandal, not admit any wrong duing, even though experts and customers had complained for years about Fords accelerating out of control, even when the brakes were pushed, and since you did not switch the cruise control on in the intended way, by using the button, it would not disengage by pressing the button either.

As for the GM ignition switches, I knew several people who carried monstrous amounts of keys on their key chains. I informed them that all that weight would cause the ignition switch to cut out unexpectedly. Those people changed their habits for the better. As for the airbags, GM informed the gov back in 1971 that these systems would cause lots of problems. Rather than allow a better system to be installed, the gov agency doubled down on their efforts to put airbags in vehicles. All this car testing that the companies do is done on tracks that do not resemble road conditions and traffic, and these problems show up later. Like all these new safety systems that cause traffic stoppages in winter due to stopping the car when traction is lost on a slippery surface. Every time a new safety system gets put on a car, the drivers dumb down expecting the system to save their butts, rather than develop great driving skills and becoming familiar with how their vehicles act in different road situations. Until the 1990s one had to learn to handle a vehicle properly to avoid accidents. Now people are relying on "sensors" to do their mind work. Not realizing that in wet and snowy weather the sensors accumulate dirt, ice, snow, and mud that keeps them from working properly.

Anyway, if you know the real reason the Pinto had a problem please add it to the video.

As I understand it, there was a component (possibly part of the bumper mount) that was positioned such that it would puncture the tank in even a mild rear-end impact. Ford actually found several workable options to fix the problem with minimal design changes, including adding a flexible rubber lining to the tank that would remain sealed even if the metal were punctured, but even though it would only add a few dollars to the cost of each car, they still decided not to bother.

Ford Pinto: It's complicated. Yes, there was a real risk of fireball in rear end collisions. However, statistics show that per million miles driven it was safer than the competition. When all types of fatalities are considered, the Pinto was approximately even with the AMC Gremlin, Chevrolet Vega, and Datsun 510. It was significantly better than the Datsun 1200/210, Toyota Corolla, and VW Beetle.

Good data! Ultimately, the Pinto scandal was not about the fuel tank problem itself, but about the fact that Ford always knew about the risk involved and did nothing to remedy it... until after the Judge's ruling. .

Vobble Wagen Beetle,, Hitlers revenge on the world. Bloody terrible car that rolled over very easily, had the fuel tank above your feet with a cap that seldom ever sealed. A wobble plate thing in the back that leaked petrol, oil and caught fire, often. Yet idiots bought them. And dickheads like Nader went after the Corvair which was similar in suspension but not the other things. It was European so must be good!! Its sports car brother was little better. Funny how y'all, just like tons of others, act like Toyota didn't have the most catastrophic safety recall, more severe than any of these & was simply overshadowed by the much less catastrophic GM ignition switch recall. Toyota's sticking accelerator killed far more & was a worldwide issue, but as is the case with them & Honda, it just gets swept under the rug, but heaven forbid Hyundai/Kia has an issue & everyone has their pitchforks out. I specifically watched this just to see if they were going to bring it up & they didn't, which didn't surprise me one bit.
