As a boy I heard Gedda I’m 62 now and have heard anything as good as this rendition Totally connected from bottom to top Listen to duet with Sutherland high D magnificent will never be beaten Also in Operetta his renditions are unsurpassed ,an intelligent singer and superb musician vocally
Indeed, only Giacomo Lauri-Volpi could surpass Gedda´s high D. Nor Baum, Eugene Conley, Nino Martini, Josef Schmidt, Alfredo Kraus, Luciano Pavarotti or Juan Diego Flórez. His high C was one of the most powerful and bright when he sang at the Met Opera House. Greetings,
Glorious. One of the most underrated singers in history. Gedda was an artist of the highest caliber, possessing an incredible voice with a shiny, brilliant timbre, stunning high Ds, charm, linguistic accuracy, and intelligence.
I think you meant he could be even more famous than he already was in opera world. I don't think anyone who is fan of classical music/opera singing in general would not know Gedda. He was one of the most if not the most recorded tenors. Plus, his big repertoire ensures his singing will come across your ears at some point if you listen to operas enough. Echo what you said, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful tenor voices ever existed. Impeccable diction, gentle yet full bright lyric voice that could sing anything really. His high notes were things of beauty that became rarer to see from other tenors these days. Forever the maestro.
I heard this rendition on radio back in the early 70's and adored it. How wonderful to see it used in this video..and I got a charge out of the horses trotting in time. Most enjoyable video..and thanks for sharing it on YOU TUBE.
Gedda singt- Wunderlich ! Unsurpassed in this Postillon-Aria, Gedda was one of the best tenors in his time, indeed. and his repertoire was astounding great, singing in at least 7 languages.
Yo guys, check out Helge Rosvaenge's version. Not on youtube but on cd. There is a video of this of Rosvaenge but he did not do the high D, played safe and sang a B. On cd he did the high D - I dropped the remote control of my cd player when I heard that. Mind blowing man!
D5 is a rare note in tenor roles and even rarer to be sung well. Gedda's D5 was the best and I have listened to several of them from other tenors. I love how bright and ringing his D5 was. His vocal placement was terrific to support and project D5 so well like he did here. His upper register was truly a league of its own. There is a compilation video of D5s from Postillon de Lonjumeau and you will appreciate Gedda's D5 even more after watching that clip. The creator of that clip chose a poor quality of Gedda's D5 and it was still better than others.
I love this video! Switching the standard sex tropes, for once the ladies is shown openly lusting for a male. Gedda is perfect for the role, super suave, attending to the many women and not forgetting the horses. Oh, and hitting them high notes like its nothing
I think it sounds like a very high tenor, with perfect notes in the higher register (I think the highest note of this song is a high D). Nevertheless, Gedda was also perfect in the lower notes for tenor. He was really a great singer.
Yes, an amazing range, Nicolai is a tenor with ease going to the lower registers Baritone in many operas he sings. The attack to that high D is flawless, magnificent. This is a movie clip from the 1950s. Can you imagine a voice like this today.
Allez savoir pourquoi...
I am posting this again, because the first time I didn't post it as a reply: Please, Geddafan1, tell us some of those wonderful stories. We, other fans, would like to hear them very much.
Comical to hear this familiar number in German. But Gedda was certainly at home in this killer tessitura as few tenors can be. I once heard Robert Swenson sing it even better, but Swenson sang himself out quickly. Gedda was 78 when he sang his last new role, and when he accepted Altoum in 2001 (at age 76) the Theatre de la Monnaie gave him top billing over the title character and the Calaf. He had earned it.
Real MALE highest register, thanks God!!! Gedda is unique HIGH-SPINTO with incredible long diapason, equally sounded in all registers! His stratospheric high notes Gedda was able to produce many different ways! That's why he usually preferred mostly lyric repertoire on stage, ONLY- so that not to exploit the working centre, to save quality of voice and to keep his legendary high D (specially - in Duo from I PURITANI with Sutherland!) for fabulously long period!..
Does anyone know whether this clip here is out of a full movie, like was the whole opera filmed, or did they just make this clip? Can't find anything but audio recordings.
Is the Opera in French or German? The title surely is in French. His voice was magnificent; the highest b flat ever recorded for a Tenor. Excellent voice. Was he Russian? Thanks.
It's in French. Adolph Adam the composer was French, born and died in Paris. There are numerous other recordings of this aria on TH-cam. Most of them are in the original French, some with French subtitles to help out. Adam was in the Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti camp, as this aria demonstrates. He literally wrote dozens of operas (operettas?), but his most enduring work is his ballet Giselle, which is still performed today by major ballet companies.
Gedda was the entire package. Incredible high notes, but everything in between; language, nuance, phrasing, passion, caressing every note. Amazing.
As a boy I heard Gedda I’m 62 now and have heard anything as good as this rendition

I dont't think he is underrated. He is generally regarded as one of the greatest singers of the XXth century....
underrated????????not in Europe for sure .......
Agree🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪

What a great voice. The best rendition.
What a mighty instrument this man had. Many of todays famous tenors should be in awe of this.
Magninifico, stupendo. Bravissimo Gedda
Gedda, Alfredo Kraus and Lauritz Melchior. Incredible singers, who had the so good technique, that they could sing concerts until the end.
I heard this rendition on radio back in the early 70's and adored it. How wonderful to see it used in this video..and I got a charge out of the horses trotting in time. Most enjoyable video..and thanks for sharing it on YOU TUBE.

That high D is worth three or four high Cs!!!
What a splendid voice! A pleasure to hear.
Gedda singt- Wunderlich ! Unsurpassed in this Postillon-Aria,
Gedda was one of the best tenors in his time, indeed. and his repertoire was astounding great, singing in at least 7 languages.
AND as an added bonus the horses even trot in time. What Technique!

Hör dom bästa tenorsångarna,i världen, men sjöng mest i Tyskland!
3:56 is what made me watch this opera
Senza parole❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

An astonishing feat, one of the great specimens of vocal art that I know. It shows how the great voice can ennoble even the most trivial music.
He could sing with elegance and emphasis in any language. He ranks beside Bjorling and Kraus in my holy trinity of tenors.
Please, Geddafan1, tell us some of those wonderful stories. We, other fans, would like to hear them very much.
yes indeed!!!! i've always loved him in this aria. i've only heard the french but this is just as well
I love this video! Switching the standard sex tropes, for once the ladies is shown openly lusting for a male. Gedda is perfect for the role, super suave, attending to the many women and not forgetting the horses. Oh, and hitting them high notes like its nothing
RIP Nicolai, you will always be remembered! 1925-07-11 - - 2017-01-08.
Meraviglioso
2:28 great!
@Barone Vitellio Scarpia this was a year ago when I posted the comment, now I don’t like Gedda at all. Rosvaenge is A GOD!!!

Ich bin wirklich kein Opern Fan. Aber das... Crazy!

Incredibly wonderfull.
In the highest notes, it sounds like a mezzo-soprano voice isn't it ?
No, he's a lyric tenor

@marcmo2004 except f***ng HUGE high notes. such a great technician
Speechless...
❤
Bother to reupload now when yt offers HD?
Gedda is Swedish for pike. The fish.
I love this more than Joseph Schmidt's version, also in Schmidt's version tho you hear every syllable in each word succinctly, that also is amazing.
Is the Opera in French or German? The title surely is in French. His voice was magnificent; the highest b flat ever recorded for a Tenor. Excellent voice. Was he Russian? Thanks.
He was Russian at 25%.

I believe his father was Russian, but Gedda was a Swedish citizen. He spoke 7 languages fluently, and sang in 11 or 12.
Could you post something from that CD? Thanks.
No, unfortunately not. He recorded highlights from it 1965 with Ruth Margret Pütz.
Russian-Swedich
He is one off them that made us
say in the 50's we hade a opera team
in Sweden like we hade a Davis-Cup team
in the
80's
hi D. what can i say.
British???
bkn!
o
Il chante beaucoup en français.
