Please take the time to read this....because this question get's asked alot: This is the story of building pastures on the farm..... Imagine you just cleared 50 acres of forest....raked off 90% of the top soil....planted various varieties of grass..and most certainly every weed in the county is gonna sprout....now when you planted that grass you put down fertilizer and lime.....because there is no "organic fertilizer" or manure option that's available here for me...that's at all cost feasible....I spread $3500 worth of grass seed, $4000 worth of fertilizer and lime....and the weather conditions are right for the grass to grow. Follow me here....... There is still no top soil..nothing but dirt to retain moisture...no worms...no microbes...nothing....just dirt. So....mow it for the next season....the grass clippings feed the land...building some top soil....seek out organic and sustainable methods of fertilizing......still nothing that's cost feasible......spend another $5000 on lime and fertilizer to correct the Ph of the soil (4.2) and mow it down for hay! Bale up 120 bales of hay and sell them at $25 each 120X25= $3000 Getting me here....so far we've lost $10,500!! By year 2.....so we robbed the land...we took hay from it.....we stole top soil building material....so what do we do the next year....another $5000 of lime and fertilizer.....by this time we've got a great stand of grass...and broad leaf weeds....because we've stolen from the land....and put back garbage to watch it get green and grow...the weeds if left unchecked and uncut will seed out and overcome the expensive grass that I've planted. So what do we do?? REALITY CHECK !!!! THROWING MONEY AT A LOOSER....EVERYTIME!! That's why this year we are gonna mow it 4 times...keep the grass in the vigorous growth stage...before it "bolts" (sends out seed heads) We'll mow down the undesirable weeds before they seed out...cutting the weed population....feeding the land, building top soil, saving money and doing the right thing this year and next year. We will build fences this spring......start grazing the land and take it back the natural way......the way that takes less money and more time. We are feeding our pastures "green manure"....grass clippings......it's what's best for the land..... The general system of agriculture in this country is plant....pound it with fertilizer....sell the commodity....plant again.....fertilize and sell.......this viscous cycle is what we want to get away from on our farm.....for the future of the land we will mow it to the ground this year. Hope this helps all of you understand a little better
As I see some of the comments, some of these people have never used a ventrac. I grew up on a farm and have used the tractors. I also own a ventrac with a mower and snow blower attachments. The JD is great but notice that the land is fairly flat. The ventrac will go as fast as you want it to go and will also go in places where a bat wing can not go. That ventrac is 32.5 horse and can go up to a 30 degree slope with those duals on it. It is also all wheel drive. I do 10 acres with the mower plus a 60 inch pull behind at 6mph on flat and hill. Keep up the entertaining videos!!
Josh, I have a couple of tractors also, love them they are hard working machines wouldn't trade them for anything! But I've been licking on a Ventrac for several years just haven't pulled the trigger on one yet! Thanks to people like you giving honest reviews, I'm pretty sure if they have issues we will all know about it! Thanks buddy, work that thing!!! Lol take care!
Very cool comparison. Now all you need is a big bat-wing mower for that John Deer and cut that field in 1/3 the time. Grass sure is looking good! I've just recently started doing something similar on my property. I've only got ~4.2 acres or so. I make do with a 5" hog for clearing and a 72" Scag for the shorter stuff that's been previously cleared. No plans to hay the land or anything but I can sure appreciate the larger mower over the little 48" Cub cadet we use for the front "yard" portion of the land.
Both cutters did a nice job for their intended purposes. The Woods mower is in the hush hog family where the Ventrac mower is more of a combination design mower. Woods makes a finish mower meant to give a better, final cut. As for as turning the John Deere like all tractors doesn't have the turning ratio. Both are fine pieces of equipment and I'm glad you have shown us the capability of the Ventrac. Thanks Josh and Jason.
You mentioned the foot hills of the blue ridge mountains. I’m well aware this mountain range spans a few states. When I lived in Virginia I was a few miles away from both the Appalachian trail and the blue ridge parkway. I loved that area. You are a lucky man to be doing what you love on such a beautiful area.
Hey Josh, have you looked into a 12ft batwing. I just purchased a used 2017 Woods BW12. I only requires 35 PTO HP with a 750 lbs tongue weight. Only requires one SCV. Man, it gets it done!
For big fields we use a 15 foot brush hog not sure if you need one that big but it saves. A Lot of time but we all so have hay morrow that does 9 foot but leaves a nice feld but you need bale it after
Here in Wisconsin, yes a farmer could put some of their land in CRP and it could not be used for 10-15 years. We could simply not do anything with it for a year (fallow), but then we would have to at least bushhog it once or twice a year to keep down any weeds, especially noxious weeds.
Enjoyed this video. I’ve looked into a ventrac for me personally I can’t justify the cost. Like you I own a John Deere and another tractor similar to your Massey. For me I can justify a 14 foot batwing mower over a ventrac. Only reason being is they are a bit cheaper and will speed up the mowing process. That’s just me personally though. Ventrac’s are one tough machine and if I ever find a good used one for the right price I’d be interested.
Yep...I'm headed out to mow with the Ventrac right now....as for the batwing v/s ventrac.....man...the ventrac is so much more capable than a batwing...we are getting a batwing from my dad...it's a TURD!! But we'll work on a restoration of it together on the channel!
Stoney Ridge Farmer awesome look forward to it. Can’t beat a batwing in a open field though just due to the size. Now hillside and thick stuff I’d love to try the ventrac on that. That’s one of those if your able to have both that’s obviously the choice. Have fun mowing today man. I’m stuck at work might get a field mowed after work though.
Wow if I had a field like yours I would make hay but I have a rough stoney small tree covered pasture that I would like to trim so thanks for showing me this . Think I'll leave the John Deere in the shed and see if I can get one of those little rigs , nice video
We are new property owners (17 acres with about 6-7 acres of rolling terrain which will need to be bush hogged). Apart for the cost, I am impressed with what I've seen with the Ventrac product line. One concern is the availability of attachments to rent v buy. I cannot justify buying attachments that I would infrequently use, and I'm having no luck finding places in my area (Athens, GA) that will rent Ventrac attachments. Have others had a similar issue / concern? Thanks.
Still love the Ventrac. I did a lot of research, and you can even get multiple decks for like a golf course to cut your mowing time even less and less. Awesome what you do it’s great!! and the fact there’s a machine like this and many more that what ever you condition is the attitude triumphs it. great to see that doesn’t hold ya back From the great white north
I'm a huge John deere fan but I'm impressed with the ventrac. I wish I had a dealer closer than almost a 3 hour drive lol. I'm going to look into ventrac more. Have a great memorial day. Be safe.
If I was a guessing man. I bet you done created a monster with your friend Jason. He probably going to be showing up a bunch more to work with that ventrac. Working on the land, among such beauty, can be therapeutic for the mind and body for anyone
I can see the vientrac has some pro's but for acreage above 5 10 of open acres especially pasture land to mow I'm going to mow with something bigger and not spend all day or two days doing it I got other things to do
Well you got me sold on the ventrac. I think it would also be better if you had a lot of rain because the tractor is like you said heavy. The tractor would either get stuck or leave big ruts in the ground were the Ventrac is small and the weight is more spread out on 8 wheels. Now I just got to talk dad into buying one. I will make him watch this video.
Hey Josh 😜 Really enjoying your content lately. Wondering why you don't get a few cows or something to graze the land. Or take it up for hay. Have a good day.
When you hay the only thing you are doing is removing nutrients from the soil, and when that is done year after year after year, your pastures degrade significantly. By chopping and dropping you are putting those nutrients back into your pasture...still not as good as having livestock graze it where you get manure and urine added back, but not nearly as bad as haying.
takes a lot of nitrogen to rot that hay but very little to grow it green comparatively speaking...we grow some clover in with our other grasses to help feed it, every once in a while we soil test and throw some fertilize on it when we need it but it has been a few yrs since a weak test...lime is important but where Josh is there may be a lot since there is quite a bit of white rock in the ground there...Like this video and conversation of viewpoints,Thanks, Kev
@@kevinpilkington6527 true some nitrogen is used, but there is much more contained in the grass itself ( a regular lawn is about 4% N). It's always better, long-term, for the pasture to chop and drop vs haying. One process gives back, the other just keeps taking away.
Remember, the bush hawg is spinnin counterclockwise so the right side is mostly turnin' the same way the grass is layin' while the left side is lifting the grass that is mashed back up to cut it. if you create a circle cut counterclockwise around the field and put the tractor wheel to the outside edge of your uncut line, you will git rid of a lot of the streaks. In other words, section it off and make right hand turns from the center cut out...Yes the Ventrac in most circumstances is a much superior mowing machine, been thinkin bout one here in west tennessee for some of our farm... How do they handle steep levees and the occasional washout? thats perty much my deciding factor! Thanks, Kev
I've wanted a ventrac for a while, but a bush hog and a farm tractor still have its place. I mow some very rough terrain with ruts and ledge outcroppings and I don't think the ventrac would handle it well.
Who else was shown the Ad with the gimicky PTO hookup where the guy says it usually takes him 40 minutes to connect the PTO and then fumbles with the gimick so much that it took longer than it takes most people to connect a regular PTO shaft?
Josh that was a fair comparison. But the tractor could pull a bat wing cutter that would cut 3 times the with. But for a better cut the ventrac is the winner.
My grandpa uses a heavy duty bush hog to cut 4-5 inch grass and for some reason won't get a finish mover(which is better for shorter grass and gives a finer cut). No clue why
Crashes happen! Part of flying a drone. Really enjoyed watching Jason out cut you. Love the ventrac and thought it would get you in the turns. What happened to the beard? Glad to see that your buddy has adjusted so well to his disability. Check out "the homeless farmer", no arms. He even drives the semi. Do more videos with your friends. Thumbs up from me.
does your ventrac have a gasoline engine or the kubota D902 diesel? i just bought a 2007 kubota BX2350 which has the D902. im very impressed both the power and fuel efficiency of that engine. im sure the durability is going to be good too. the tractor only has 399 hours on it.
Love the lil ventrac it does everything you want it to but question not asking about what you pay for it but just wondering what the payments on a one year lease is and how ya go about buying it after that lease I up does the one year come off of it and payments stay the same or go lower just wondering what payment is on the ventrac is a month and what it goes for whith the attachments you have for it and what comes whith it for basic attachments..sorry about all the questions but I like it and might check one out for my self
Good stuff! I demoed the Steiner 450, but haven't had the chance to demo the Ventrac 4500. Hopefully I'll be able to check it out soon! Do you have any other attachments for the Ventrac that you've been using on the farm?
Very interesting comparison! Have you figured out a cost per acre between the JD and the Ventrac? Cost per acre and time per acre would be helpful in making a choice! Also do you change directions each time you cut the field? I wonder if a 90 Degree rotation would make for a better result?
So Hap...normally I mow in a circle....I'll break the field up into sections and mow in circles. For demonstration purposes we mowed in rows....then It just made no sense for me to keep turning around the tractor....the ventrac continued back and forth...but I mowed circles with the tractor once we stopped filming.....way too much time involved in turning around the John Deere at the end of a row.....let me also be clear....I love that Woods mower...it's served me very well....but I've found something much better now!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Once you find the best tool for a job it makes sense to keep using it! That grass will break down pretty quickly and if you can get a chance to use that manure spreader it'll even go faster! Maybe you ought to let Mrs Stoney Ridge drive that drone...She might be better at missing the trees and tractors than you are! Keep doing what you're doing amigo!!
I see one advantage of the ventrack it gets a full 6 foot with the mower in front of you. The bush hog on the back has to overlap just a little to cut your tracks out
I’d like to try one of them out on my farm and for my custom bush hogging business in the hills of Kentucky. I bet with rougher tires on there it would be like a mountain goat
can the ventrac handle 3 to 4 inch brush I am hearing you talk about it and others seen some of the brush you cleared with it I am kinda curious if it would be a helpful and wise decision because it looks like it'd be better than a 64 135MF for 8 9 10 hours every other day and if you have already answered this question I apologize bud but nice video as always keep up the hard work bud and I hope you are able to get plenty of help with that fence look forward to seeing cows lol
The ventrax clearly does a better job at less cost than the big tractor! If it has the longevity and dependablity of the JD your set. Great comparison Josh!!!!
That's not a good comparison. Cuz them are two different mowers used for two different job. Ventrac mower is more of a finish mower. The woods is a brush cutter for small saplings and ruff brush. I would say if you has a finish mower for the deere would have been a better comparison. Just my thought. Doin a great job. I enjoy watchin yer videos. Have a great day
Boy, those JD tractors aren't cheap. Does the job, though. Fortunate happenstance that Jason, as an amputee, can easily operate the Ventrac as it is - no adaptations needed. Kudos to Jason for carrying on.
Wouldn't the John Deere be able to mow at a faster rate of speed? The testing I've seen pointed out that the tractor mowed faster than the Ventrac but that time was made up because it turned around so much faster which they called a "wash". But they also said it'd mowed their ditches where the tractor they had needed a side mounted bush-hog.
The problem with the brushhog is being behind the tractor it does not pick up all the grass flattened by the tractors wheels. Our "brushhogs" are slightly different, it has lateral anti-wear adjustable skids instead of wheels and the top/3rd link is elongated so the brushhog floats to the groud contour, the biggest difference is we use them in reverse especially in heavy ground which is mainly what they are made for, the cutting in heavy ground is done by 2 or 4 heavy anti-wear chains but you can cut grass too but most change over to blades, the 2 blades have 3 or 5 links of chain(for flexability) welded to a high tensile blade that cut grass better. Working all day in reverse is a pain in the neck, literaly, but you do not smash lights, mirrors etc in tall heavy brush. th-cam.com/video/hM2sFwP8Ssw/w-d-xo.html this one is similar to mine
The ventrac spread it out, but I don’t like how low it cuts. So I like the cut on the Deere. Also 31k for a mower is outrageous 😂 I’ll spend the extra 15k for power and usability
Your comparing Apple's to oranges the woods is a heavy grass and brush mower the venttak is made or light grass and bush thats why its cuts better i think if it was me i would get a batwing for the jd it would take a lot less time to cut i would hate to have to cut 80 acres with the vent tak to small for me just my opinion another great video
So the tough cut on the ventrac is actually made for rougher stuff...the finish mower is more for grass...the tough cut is made for brush. I like the finish mower cut much better than the tough cut in shorter grass

In Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas they're called "brush hogs".
Have you thought about getting a finish mower from Wood's?
Very nice comparison. Sorry about your drone- I am just glad it didn't fly a few feet higher and hit you!
Awesome what you do it’s great!! and the fact there’s a machine like this and many more that what ever you condition is the attitude triumphs it. great to see that doesn’t hold ya back
From the great white north
Your shirt is awesome!
Josh that was a fair comparison. But the tractor could pull a bat wing cutter that would cut 3 times the with. But for a better cut the ventrac is the winner.
What was the instrumental music playing during the grass cutting competition? Great stuff!
My grandpa uses a heavy duty bush hog to cut 4-5 inch grass and for some reason won't get a finish mover(which is better for shorter grass and gives a finer cut). No clue why
Are you still using the Ventrac for mowing? Are you using just the tough cut or are you using a finish mower as well? Thanks!
Keep on keeping on another good one
Big thumbs up to your lifelong friend!! Another reason to love that machine!
Jason is one of the best guys I know. If ever I needed anything I could always call on Jason for help...he's one hell of a man...so is his dad
Thanks for the video homeboy very cool brother thanks for the info
That's a huge area to mow. For what reason do you need this field? Granted it is beautiful. But why bro beans.
does your ventrac have a gasoline engine or the kubota D902 diesel? i just bought a 2007 kubota BX2350 which has the D902. im very impressed both the power and fuel efficiency of that engine. im sure the durability is going to be good too. the tractor only has 399 hours on it.
What Ventract and deck?think it’s a 4500p but could be a Y, any hills for the ventract? Property is hill so lean skid steer
Batwing....
Not another drone biting the dust lol. Woo
lol Cost of doing videos I guess lol
No stripes?
love your videos brother keep them coming 5 thumbs up
Love the channel keep up the good work
Is the drone done or did the props take the hit?
I picked it up....dusted it off...and it was good to go!
The drone footage was epic with the awesome music!. I hope your drone is OK it look like it crashed hard.
Dusted off and ran just fine! Pretty awesome!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer That is awesome! When it crashed I yelled at the screen NOOO!. LOL.
Great video keep making that farm awesome!
Why not bail your grass up to sell or feed your cattle?
very nice field as others have said should be growing and bailing round bail hay
No market for hay in that area.
Great job enjoyed that!!!
But Josh, isn't the most important thing to be sitting on a big giant machine and looking cool? ;o)
Great video Guys
Hey did I miss the video on the hand you guys salted up? Love the content
Hey Josh good video and when I eventually do get my property I'm going to buy me a ventrac from watching your video I just wonder how much they are
I see one advantage of the ventrack it gets a full 6 foot with the mower in front of you. The bush hog on the back has to overlap just a little to cut your tracks out
The ventrac works out to be about 20% faster cutting and much more accurate than the conventional tractor....headed out now!
I’d like to try one of them out on my farm and for my custom bush hogging business in the hills of Kentucky. I bet with rougher tires on there it would be like a mountain goat
Damn that mower looks great. I don’t know the cost yet but I bet it’s an arm and a leg
can the ventrac handle 3 to 4 inch brush I am hearing you talk about it and others seen some of the brush you cleared with it I am kinda curious if it would be a helpful and wise decision because it looks like it'd be better than a 64 135MF for 8 9 10 hours every other day and if you have already answered this question I apologize bud but nice video as always keep up the hard work bud and I hope you are able to get plenty of help with that fence look forward to seeing cows lol
That's awesome I actually know what cruising is. But I gotta say, Ashe county had Wilkes cruising beat hands down!!
The ventrax clearly does a better job at less cost than the big tractor! If it has the longevity and dependablity of the JD your set. Great comparison Josh!!!!
Why don’t you have a batwing bush hog but have these other tools
That ventrack kicked butt
That's not a good comparison. Cuz them are two different mowers used for two different job.
Ventrac mower is more of a finish mower. The woods is a brush cutter for small saplings and ruff brush.
I would say if you has a finish mower for the deere would have been a better comparison.
Just my thought. Doin a great job. I enjoy watchin yer videos. Have a great day
Bigger isn't always better, but will the Ventrac last as long as a tractor?
yeah there about $20,000 for the open station and $25,000 for with factory heated/ac cab
Nice video!!!
Dude awesome stuff!!
But they also said it'd mowed their ditches where the tractor they had needed a side mounted bush-hog.
when are you planning to build some fences?
Try 6 foot sagebrush. Good luck
I love my bush hog but I always have problems with the right side digging into the ground whenever I mow smh
undertakerthedeadman turn the handle on the three point hitch to adjust the lift and you can level the bush hog
Check the air in your tires too
The ventrac spread it out, but I don’t like how low it cuts. So I like the cut on the Deere. Also 31k for a mower is outrageous 😂 I’ll spend the extra 15k for power and usability
Love that Ventrac and what would that one you have cost with the brush cutter? Thanks good video
I love that Ventrac, to much money for me though.
