    So great to hear you talking about taking care of your soil and seeing the grass so healthy. I hadn't noticed before how nicely the flower beds around the house have become, too. I hope that city girl you married is doing that.
    It's going to be so great not too long from now when we can see some cattle out there grazing on that sweet green grass to grow some tasty steaks and burgers. I have to admit that I have had some doubts, son, but all those have given away to envy and joy for you both. Keep goin''!

    Josh, Get a cooltop fan for your ventrac. It was an $800 add on for my ventrac and worth every penny. It’s a very strong fan mounted in your canopy that moves a lot of air and keeps lots of dust off of you while mowing.

    Josh I am going to put it out there because it is something I have really been thinking about over the last few weeks. Not only are you a great Steward of your land but you are of your time and resources. I love the fact you try to help others to learn but you support other homesteaders. You are a great man and you are building a legacy that others can and should follow. You will always have my support.

    Love this type of video. Now I have zero experience with aerating pasture land but I own a lawncare company and do alot of aeration. everything Ive ever been told is to only aerate spring and fall because aeration causes stress to the lawn for the first few weeks and if its hot it take longer to recover and can damage the lawn.

    Oh Man, you really need some livestock to convert that glorious sunshine to organic fertiliser. I never allow grass to seed on my Scottish smallholding unless I'm making hay. Every time my stock leave a field I always top the whole field to reset to zero. Despite not using fertiliser my fields are lush and the sward dense. I aerate twice a year with a sward slitter and it is rare to have standing water. I firmly believe that the nitrogen harvesting ability of clover is improved by allowing air to the roots. Love your work and the time you take to explain to newcomers. Regards from Scotland.

I have really no budget was on a disability program for my wife ( I was the one and only care giver ) To do the job I have a 2120 John Deere and 7 foot mower . Would you just let the old hay lay and rot away or rake it and move it . This field is about 14 acres and the sister field which is always wet , 3 springs is about 11.5 acres . I can take the knowledge you share and apply it to my Mr. Suburbanite lawn. Good stuff to share, Josh. Excellent comment about using sunscreen. When I was in my late teens/early twenties I got sunburned way more often than I should have. In my late thirties/early forties I had to have skin cancer treated twice. I'm a lot more careful about sun exposure now. The treatments were unpleasant, but I survived. Use sunscreen, Stoney Ridgers!

    Just a thought try extending the top link and get that three point setting level or a little back and you are right about the hay but if you plan on running cattle fertile ground requires inputs that clover you speak of I have it the fescue orchard Timothy I have it I have used chicken manure and I still have to put fertilizer on it I went from 35 bales off of these two small fields that we bought and reworked now it's 205 5 by 4 rolls hay and we usually cut it 3 or 4 times but you will learn this when you start feeding cattle manure is great but if your not producing it then buying it you will figure out what I mean the grass won't grow itself and you need hay to feed the cattle

  • @ArkansasPilgrim
    @ArkansasPilgrim 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, Josh! Commenting way after viewing so hopefully this is actually pertinent to the video. You're right about tolerances and being "tighter" (there's that word!). The tolerance is how much off of the actual size a part is supposed to be. It's a plus-or-minus dimension. Nothing is ever made "exact". There's always a little "slop" allowed in everything. In some things, it doesn't matter that much. Like the length of the pull-cord on a lawnmower. The diameter of (and how round) the valves in the mower engine is another thing.

    Don't ever hay if you want a good pasture. BTW is that Korean Lespedeza or Sericea? If the former, you definitely want that in your pastures. How high can that Ventrac cutter raise up to Josh? 8-10 inches is better than 4-5 when building pasture - it provides shade for the ground that way and will help reduce your ground from drying out.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Around 8 inches is what we're cutting.....and yep thats Lespedeza.....cattle will devour it

    • @fooddude9921
      @fooddude9921 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StoneyRidgeFarmer Josh, sorry wasn't clear. There's about 20 types of lespedeza. The common one which is very invasive and can over take your pasture if not managed correctly is sericea lespedeza (cuneata). The kind Greg Judy raves about is Korean lespedeza (maximowiczii). Eight inch cut height on a Ventrac - wow.

  • @patricksmith9299
    @patricksmith9299 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Josh, I really wonder if your aerator is the best tool for the job you want to do. On the farm I work on, with use a bigger roller, like the one you have, to finish preparing the soil after a fresh till. Yes it aerates the soil but it also compacts it. We have a pretty thick top soil that is soft, while you seem to have a small top soil that is hard. Just food for thoughts.

    • @als8518
      @als8518 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is alot of argument on both sides about aeration and compaction, and fuel use. Healthy pasture grazed or mowed to a proper height should develop healthy soil that absorbs well on its own in most soil types.

  • @Futurebeefcake
    @Futurebeefcake 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Im not trying to argue, but when it comes to brush hogging isn’t it better to keep a not so sharp blade so the blades are less prone to chippin? Or is that just for beush gogs on big pto tractors and not a ventrac.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ventrac tough cut actually cuts grass much better with razor sharp blades. Bush hog just needs to have a pointed edge...if really sharp it cuts better in my experience...however they'll dull up that sharp edge in about an hour

    Where are you located? Just curious. I know you’re not too far north because you have copperheads, we only have rattlesnakes in Montana. Nice video. Most of our dryland hay is prairie hay like bluestem and side oat gramma, etc or crested wheat grass. We grow mostly alfalfa and sudan grass in the valley.
