- Population One, or Population: ONE as it's officially spelled, is the first VR battle royale game I've ever played. AND APPARENTLY NOT MADE BY FACEBOOK. Oops. Facebook (Oculus) just bought Big Box VR, I know that now. But my point still stands. Population One is one of the strangest VR games I've ever played as well, and I've played almost every VR shooter out there at this point. Population One however could have been one of the best VR games out there, if they just tweak it ever so slightly. This is my petition for them to do so. So if I remember right indie developer was acquired by Facebook in mid 2021, but this game and a lot of it's core functionality was built by the indie developer before this time. I remember hoping that the Facebook acquisition would open up some avenues for the more flushed out game too.

Yeah had to pause the video when he said “made by Facebook” to check the comments and make sure this was said. It’s not fair to judge this game like that, especially if you’re right about it happening mid 2021… cuz it’s still essentially mid 2021. The benefits that come from being owned by Facebook wouldn’t have happened yet.
I remember seeing the devs being very involved in the community when the game first came out. They seemed like genuinely cool indie devs trying to make the best game they could. I haven’t followed this game basically since then, so maybe they’ve changed? But it’s still not fair to consider them having unlimited funds.

The criticism of the game was still valid though, it’s just the context is different.
This game looks exactly the same as from when I beta tested it in 2017.

Just for a bit of context, when the game was created it was not owned by oculus but it was bought semi-recently. So Facebook hasn’t had a TON of time to change stuff. But I definitely agree with the critiques.
Also, check out Township Tale, I think you’ll enjoy it, and it’s a great community game as well.

This is a game that really opens up once you get the combat, movement, and positioning down. Also add as any squad mate you come across that you like, and pretty quick you’ll have a good list of people to group up with all the time

Verticality in movement in shooters is extremely underutilized, but it's soooooo fun, it's extremely fun and creates way more interesting scenarios.

That's because the one game that tried to do it was Lawbreakers, and that shit bombed hard. It's such a shame though because all of the "shooters" to come out nowadays regurgitate the exact same mechanics and concepts that are trending which is why we keep getting shitty battle royales and generic Call of Duty game No. 19. (Seriously though, there are literally 19 call of duty games, not counting spinoffs) All of the unique games like Unreal or Tribes have long died out and all we're left with is uninspired trash.

I bought this game because I thought there was solos, after all, it's not called population 4 so it never occurred to me to check.
Hoping that now with the Facebook acquisition they will fill in the gaps in this game and I get get my money's worth.

lobbies of 100 are to much and I can see how 50 would be fun but small lobbies are what make he game fun, is stands out

Hey Habbie, loved the video. Been playing Pop One since it came out. I have over 6,000+ games. It’s become a very difficult game to get into for beginners because of the huge skill gap. The game becomes more fun when you get a good squad going. Hope you give the game more time

BigBox honestly did a great job with their game. It was only their second game and it became so popular that Facebook bought it. This game has only been owned by Oculus for all of a few months. I love you Habie but I gotta disagree with you here. I really hope Facebook works to make this game all it could be.
Yeah, he’s got a couple facts wrong, here. Variety of skins, too. I will be curious to see if post streaming, his opinion changes as he gets to know the game a bit more. 🙂

as a population one player this video does the game justice. so much room for improvements but the game itself is very good after a somewhat steep learning curve

I've played the game for 70+ hours now, I started in kinda the middle of season 1. And it has to be the best game I have ever played, its supposed to be that arcade type of game. When I first got it I barely turned on my mic. It has helped me to overcome some social anxiety stuff, and I've met a lot of awesome people!
I would really recommend playing the game for a lot longer and then make a video on it.
I had this same experience w rec room! It also was some of my first multiplayer/ vr combat experience experience and idk man positive communities and good games are just so good!?!
Hey Habie my advice is get really familiar with inventory management, soda use, peeling bananas, switching between guns. Anytime a gun is dropped it needs to be reloaded. There’s a lot of quirks to pop 1 that are off putting to new players and the skill gap makes it worse, BUT once you have the inventory down as second nature, then you can just worry about positioning and shooting and spastic building. Also play around with offhand and motion dampening settings. This game is a struggle when you get hung up on the controls, but once you have a system down it’ll change your experience.

I wholeheartedly agree that reloading weapons feels underwhelming. But I will give them that flick reloading the double barrel and revolver is awesome. Doesn’t mean it balances out, but I feel it’s important to note
There are other VR battle royals that you might wanna check out, like for free Rec Room has a BR mode- and Pavlov has some BR-like modes, there’s a lot more but my general disinterest for the genera has made me ignore a lot of them
True! I've played BR on Outset Island from Windwaker in Pavlov. It was nuts!
Stand Out is really fun but they need more real players. Bots are ok but nothing replaces killing people. I also like that the more people on your squad, your health gets cut. (you can eat an apple or take pills to get back up to 100). But a nice way of balancing the game.
War Dust is good and has people but that's more like Battlefield than a Battle Royal.

this game going free recently has now brought in new people yet most of those new people are sentient embryos, so it's like a double edged sword
Epic Games has displayed interest in VR, specifically the quest 2 in recent times so it's reasonable to expect them to attempt to compete with Pop1 at some point. I was so close to buying it when I first heard about it but much like you said, the whole "24 player lobbies" were a real turn off.
Why? How is 24 players, which is 8 squads of 3... somehow a turn off? Matches last about about 15 minutes tops and make for an easy pick up and go experience. I could see more squads, but I'm not sure that would change much.
I don’t think you could get a game with 100 people working on a quest
This is a review by someone who played 10 minutes of this game. Anyone who has played this game can tell he knows very little about the game just watching the say he reloads or shakes the shield milkshakes (xd). You shouldn't compare this to Fortnite. I play both games and they have little in common.
@@Minipimmer agreed. I hate it when people call it Fortnite VR. Why? Because it has building? Shields? Really? That's two things in common with Fortnite. That's it. Skins? Well skins and shields or armor are a staple of EVERY BR so I just don't understand the people who call it Fortnite VR.

I honestly have to agree with your assessment of the shooting in this game. For a title that almost entirely focuses on it, it’s so much worse than anything else I’ve played in VR. Pavlov, Onward, even Contractor’s shooting feels better than Pop1’s. It almost feels like after you pull the trigger everything is suddenly out of your hands, pun intended.
This game has the steepest learning curve around. It’s pretty normal to get shit on and not understand how to lead your target, hold the different etc your first few hundred games.

They even dropped the squads by two per match recently... this game has loads of potential but it is held back by some strange decisions.
It originally had 6 squads. Then they increased it to 8. Then, with that and a lot of other bugs, they dropped it back down to 6. Probably temporarily
@@VirtualPandaVR I hope so! I can't say I experienced loads of bugs as I played it casually, maybe 12 hours a week tops, so to me it just appeared they removed the feature for no reason! Some transparency would've been good

The tummy grumble noises made me think my tummy was making noises and then I rewound the video and realized that one of the noises was from me, this video has inspired me to eat, 100/10 would call my mom later

I love it.
My favorite thing to do in this game is to climb the huge tower in the middle.Getting to the top takes like more than half the game but feels amazing getting to the top.I recommend doing it next time you play:)
You can get up there in about 45 seconds ! Check out some videos about how to climb correctly

I love this game. But the thing that ticks me off the most about it is that games are often incredibly unbalanced. From what I’ve noticed, the game balances the levels of players on squads, not across them. This makes it so that all of the max level players with thousands of hours are all placed on the same team, while placing everyone who just started the game against them. I’ve played the game a lot myself and I’m level 30, but almost every game my squad and I get curbstomped by level 50s. I wish that the game would try to make squads more balanced to make it more enjoyable for newer players like me.
I play on quest, I have had it since before the Facebook apocalypse, and the things that Facebook does, consistently, hurt me and I always live in fear that I could get banned for some mistake and have $400 go down the drain
Hence why I am saving for a htc vive as my first VR instead.

Facebook didn't make this...... c'mon dude. It was made by BigBox who was acquired by Facebook after the massive success of this game
- they tried to increase the number of squads but ran into performance issues on Quest.
- the floating mags allow for a bigger focus on the gameplay... it's better than anything else for the style of game. The point isn't to reload guns, it's to compete strategically in a battle royale.
- they have more variety of skins that you buy or unlock for events....
The only complaint I have with this game is that it can be hard for new players to get into because of how competitive it has become. But that's why we have private lobbies and bots.

Here’s some extra info on population one. 1. Big box originally made the game and was bought by oculus later on. To my knowledge, population one was the second **big** game that they have made for vr if you even call their first one successful. 2. There are different gamemodes such as solos that are *limited time* because of the small player base spreading out to make the wait time in rooms so long. (It isn’t even the only reason why). That also answers why there are 24 player lobbies, simply because the player base is too small. VR is by every mean way smaller than pc or consoles such as Xbox or ps1 - 5. You can move way quicker with the flying and climbing which makes it so easy to get to other players. You can find WAY faster ways to climb to move faster. There have been many events that gave gun skins, new features, and character skins to make it fun.
Taking the wind right out of Big Box's sail. They were such a small development team that made this amazing game, and they don't even get a mention? Just slap a Facebook label on it and there's no need to delve any deeper. y'know, cuz we all know Facebook sucks right?
Coming from a competitive realistic shooter background I find this game very hard to enjoy not only due to the horrible gun physics but rather every fucking aspect from picking up the gun to rotating the barrel. Glad I found someone to agree lol.

fair comments, it would be great to see this game pushed to a free to play model with micro transaction skins for characters and weapons, imo it would gain much more popularity and hopefully gain sponsors for vr esport events...that you could attend in person (in vr) the spectator mode is amazing for shout casting the perspective is amazingly well done and not even noticed or used by many who play the game (great to watch other teams and pick up tips and tricks for those who just started)..i know vr will get there eventually...
as a pop:one beta tester, all of these decisions were made by the developers (BigBox), before being bought, the game wasn’t made by facebook or oculus

It always bothered me about this game that I couldn't do something as simple as let go of the grip on a sniper rifle and pull the bolt back with my right hand like I do in every other VR shooter I've played.
This might sound super niche, but I didnt realize until recently how important good hand design is in vr. I wasn't planning on getting this game anyway, but seeing the hands not interact with the guns at all just hurts my soul.
I like the bop it reload it’s convenient especially to me.
I dropped all my bullets in saints and sinners and I’m to scared to play it again.
Took worst case scenarios lobbies are typically always full and trust me get into actual competitive lobbies then talk 😂

rec room battle royale is really fun. theres no building or anything, but its clear they werent trying to be anything that they arent. it also has solos, so thats a plus.

To be honest, I really think you need you need to give it some time. The game does have some Interesting design decisions, and they become more fitting once you get into higher level gameplay. There is a super active community here and also much more variety in skins in the higher levels. It’s also important to note that BigBox made this game, not Facebook. Yes bigbox was purchased by Facebook a few months back, but it’s still made and managed by bigbox
I hope you give it another chance. I have been playing VR since late 2016 and there is no other multiplayer game that has captured my time and attention more than this game

the reason of only 24 players is a current technical restraint of VR
VR players send MUCH more data then flatscreen
whereas flatscreen gaming needs
1. what gun you are using
2. where your looking
3. where you are
4. if your firing, if so, where
5. for BRs, your inventory
VR needs all that and
1. hand position
2. head position
3. rotation data for your hands
4. the position of the item in your hand
if you wanted 100 player battleroyale in VR you'd need to be willing to except VERY high ping, which isnt fun
VR BRs wont ever really take off, its why you dont really seem them, its a genre that is more then difficult to adapt to a VR environment
I too have a love/hate relationship with this game. It’s got crossplay which is nice, but the voice chat breaks constantly. Communication is kind of important for teamwork and my friends and I are sick of not being able to hear each other once a match starts.
I wish Pavlov could implement this games climbing and mobility mechanics. Truly nothing better than grabbing a fence with one hand and pulling your self up just enough to peek and shoot over the top and then dropping back down when taking fire.
Have you ever played Stand Out or War Dust? Both by Raptor Labs.
You can't climb anything but you can grab the top of walls, windows, fences etc. and do this.
Stand Out is Battle Royal while War Dust is like Battlefield.
War Dust did something recently to the jet though so it's flying weird, to me at least. Still a great game and we got a new map so I guess I shouldn't complain.
I think you are underappreciating the technical limitations of running this thing on a quest 1. They probably could increase the lobby size on the quest 1, but only if they make things significantly uglier. At some point though, I hope they do that.
When I first played this game a little kid in my squad was climbing a really tall tower and then he started crying because he was too high up
This game is great when you get a good team but can really suck when you get bad teammates, almost not worth logging in sometimes, can be 30 minutes lost or thoroughly enjoyed

The lobby size problem is what it is, VR community isnt big enough to make an ok game have 100 man lobbies, you would never get a game going.

Honestly 24 players in enough it gives you enough space to get guns and find good spots meet up with team but also enough to have epic battles

Why is it that if a game has building it's fortnite? This game is nothing like fortnite. I didn't realize fortnite has climbing mechanics and a vertical combat system. Don't say shields either bacause every single BR has a shield or armor system. Edgelords gonna edgelord I guess!
I played this game enough to know that the gun combat is so horrible - nevermind the reloading - just the slow slow muzzle velocity and laughable inaccuracy of the guns it frustrated me to no end. Not intuitive, makes it really annoying as a new player to come in and feel like you've never shot a gun before when you've been crushing it in other VR shooters leading up to installing pop one. After the Fall is GOOD arcade shooting IMO (nevermind some of that game's issues), it's wildly unrealistic but quite satisfying and still natural to shoot. Pop one is something else.
