Same! I got a cheap Craftsman chainsaw years ago and never opened the box. I went to use it last week and the recoil spring jammed before it even ran. This video saved me from chucking the thing in the garbage and buying something decent.
To me, this is not that bad :) I find installing valves on sv engines is worse if you don´t have the specific tools from the manufacturer. Or taking out the threaded main jet of an european Tecumseh carb. Or removing a stubborn flywheel or blade adapter... Those are my least favourite jobs!
I'm not mechanically inclined, but I do know a great Stihl mechanic, that can fix even the simple things for me and he does good work and is very reasonable on price!
Yeah also the spring sometimes gets bent and at that point I just buy another spring because if you try to bend it back, you will weaken the integrity of the spring

This video was absolutely the best that I have seen so far on TH-cam for my situation as it demonstrated the repair for the recoil starter that I have been working on for my MTD Yard Machines 21" snowblower, circa 2008! The inside hook of the rewind spring was bent exactly like yours; I broke off about an 1" and reformed a new hook; installed it. Again, with the detail that you have shown here, I melted in the notch, finished the assembly, and it is working perfectly! Thanks so much for the video; it would have been extremely difficult for me to have made the repair and modification without this video!
Yes indeed. No gimmicks, no dumb lead ins, no annoying jokes, no stupid costumes, no compressor in the background, no wind noise on the microphone, nothing but good camera shots and good easy to understand instructions.
An alternative is to position 2 finishing (headless) nails on a flat board. They should be distanced a little closer than the diameter of the spring enclosure. Hook the end of the spring on one nail and start wrapping the spring around both nails, keeping it taut as you go. Grab it with a pliers and it’s ready to install. Much easier on your finger tips!

Great video as always. I've found it easier to rewind a spring by placing a washer on each side in the middel and claming it in a vice. The vice will hold the spring end and allow just enough clearance to rewind the whole thing, on turn at a time. Then use a nail to hold the spring in place until you're ready to install it on the engine. Small pointed vice grips work well on that part of the job.
Thank you for the excellent video, Don! That tip about burning the hole saved me from having to untie, unwind, rewind, and retie several times as slack was still a bit short at 4 full winds. This whole process was was tedious as hell to do, but you made it look easy!
Thank you sharing your techniques, tips, and tricks! About 30 years ago I worked for a small engine repair shop; that was my only experience replacing starter ropes. We had custom tools that fit the wheel, and we would just tension up the wheel and let it suck the rope back in. In my mind I thought "I know how to do this, I don't need this information." But while watching I realized I no longer have access to all those nice, expensive tools the shop had! I haven't needed them for 30 years, and now I know a way to do with out them! Stay safe up there, mon frère!

Don, I *just* finished semi-Restoring my 78(?) Chrysler SnoRunner & I decided the pull cord had like 2 more pulls tops left & said ugh lets replace it. Everything was no issue until the spring. Theres TWO slots you have to line up the curved ends in & its just "impossible". That tip at 5:00 saved the day. You Can't buy much for these anymore except from some clown. *THANK YOU x100 , SIR!*

I'm so glad I found this. I needed to replace the pull cord on my Predator 212. With typical male bravado I dove in eyes wide shut. Before I know it there's no more recoil even though "I swear I didn't touch that part". I took off the 10mm bolt to inspect the error of my ways and nearly caught the coil spring with my teeth. Defeated I retreated to the warmth and found this video. Cannot recommend enough. It's apparent that Don either really knows this equipment or like so many others, he's had it go very very wrong and has had to learn the hard way. In either case, thank you Don. You helped make very short work of that job... which is good since I used the wrong type of rope and get to do it again; it broke off in my hand on the first pull.

One thing to add is, after you are done, make sure that when you pull the rope out all the way, the rope 'bottoms out" before the spring does, otherwise you will break your new spring.

I recently had to do this with a Craftsman pressure washer from 2003. Since only about 1.5" of the spring was broken on the inside end, the spring luckily stayed in place and all I had to do was take a pair of lineman's pliers and bend a hook in the right direction at the broken end and walla, fixed.

Hi, having issue with friction plate and the nut. If I tighten it too tight, the spring won't go back. If I let it be a little more loose, after 5 6 starts, my nut falls off and have to redo the whole procedure. I heard some ppl weld it, or use nylon on the nut. Any suggestions?
Hi. I have a craftsman 25cc gas trimmer just bought 2 years ago only i used it just 3 times and when I tried this summer it doesn't work. I change the spark plug and still doesn't work, I notice the starter rope is loose because it doesn't move the trimmer head. It doesn't turn. I am trying to pull it but it doesn't feel the weight of the trimmer head on. I am very frustrated and I dont know how to fix it. Can you share a video how to fix it or something that can help me to put it to run again. The other parts are clean. I was using an angle grinder lightly on the end of a small coil spring. Perhaps 2" long. I very nearly lost an eye when it grabbed and threw with the hook end actually lodging under my eye.... Always insist to everyone to use safety eye glasses... Always.
This is not to criticize your video and is just my opinion. With your type of pull starter assembly you don't need to melt a notch in the pulley. You install the rope in the handle with it's knot, then wind the pulley by hand 6 - 8 times and align the rope holes on the housing and pulley, then slide the screwdriver into the housing and through the pulley to prevent the pulley from turning. Then feed the rope through both and tie a knot. Then remove the screwdriver and allow the rope to get pulled in. Pull it a few times to make sure it works smoothly and the spring has a good pull even when the handle reaches the housing.
We had to drill another hole to thread the pull string - but now, tied knot at end of string, interferes with placing the cover on the machine. WHAT did I do wrong? THX for a response

That recoil is the sams as some on the Troy built tiller mine is a year old but that recoil starter for my tiller has been discontinued after a year of being sold on eBay.wonder why.?

What if the spring is not broken and the starter robe is still loose? I wanted to put on the generator and found out that the robe is loose when putting on the generator and it went back in when i loose it i found out that the starter rope is still okay what should i do?

the center screw in my case does not come out it just goes round and round, does anyone know why please

One thing to add is, after you are done, make sure that when you pull the rope out all the way, the rope 'bottoms out" before the spring does, otherwise you will break your new spring.

What if the spring is not broken and the starter robe is still loose? I wanted to put on the generator and found out that the robe is loose when putting on the generator and it went back in when i loose it i found out that the starter rope is still okay what should i do?

Hi Don, I have an old Toro 824 I'm in the process of searching for a replacement carb, I will probably go with the Oregon adjustable, but I noticed a price difference between Discountonline and from the Oregon site, DOL want $ 89.95 while Oregon want $ 38.56 for the same carb, if you sell these yourself what would your price be to B.C?
