    Damn, Bob knows how to tell a story! Hooked on every word he said.

      +ttlpwn34 Just clear driven speech, each word is an actual word, reminds me of George Carlin. People like this are so pleasing to hear. I actually listen to them to perfect my spoken English.

      +ttlpwn34 I was just going to say the same thing, I love the stories of people who are gone, but his delivery was great.

      Those who have worked with costad say he has a memory like no other and I don’t doubt that a single word he recited about Cosell’s comments were not exactly what Costello actually said verbatim.

    In the 1970's there was a real divide in America, I am not kidding: Do you like Howard?
    Do you HATE Howard? I found myself always on the "Like" side and I am glad I was.
    Howard was a great American character. Flawed as most are - probably alcoholic with a huge ego, but he had 'IT'. God Bless Him. Ha, I had arguments with my college roommates that almost lead to fights in 1978. Such was the power of Howard.

    "So, you are the child who rhapsodizes about the infield fly rule."
    Wow, Howard Cosell is one to talk. If by "rhapsodizing," he means being pretensions and long-winded and using purple prose. Because he was the all time champion in that category.

    When I was 18 I was a elevator operator in his building. He came home one evening entered the car with other passengers had his big cigar in his mouth. As he was the last passenger to get off I had a moment with him and said humbly Mr Coselle. He glanced at my name tag and read my name and said " Good evening Philip. Philip,
    ..its hard to be humble when your perfect". and walked out. I'm 58 now.

    • @bunpeishiratori5849
      @bunpeishiratori5849 ปีที่แล้ว

      I absolutely appreciate you spelling Philip correctly (with only one L) rather than that bastardized version (with two hideous L’s) that so many non-Philips seem to think is the norm.

    If it was possible to ask Cosell a question now I’d really want to know from him whether he’d quit on football like Costas did.
    I considered Cosell a moral compass on sports. He cared about these controversies more than anyone else.

    According to the biography by Mark Ribowsky, Cosell was resentful of Jim McKay because it was McKay and not HE who Roone Arledge chose to televise the hostage situation at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Cosell became more outspoken about his religion afterward and never forgave Arledge for what he perceived as a slight. So that's where that story comes from.

  • @jennifersman7990
    @jennifersman7990 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Howard was always jealous of Jim McKay and felt Roone Arledge gave McKay the better assignments and never forgave Arledge for not putting him in the anchor chair when the Munich massacre happened

    I remember watching big sporting events on tv in the 70s and being so irritated with Howard. Everyone seemed to feel that way about him. The next day after the event people would say the game was great but that damn Howard Cosell wouldn’t shut up during the whole fricken game!! He could be very annoying.

    In the 70s I was a kid and a Dodger fan (and also a boxing fan). I really hated Cosell - in the Dodgers Yankees world series (there were three), he was so biased to New York. He didn't have any respect for Fernando Valenzuela.

    • @jennifersman7990
      @jennifersman7990 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In his book, Al Michaels tells how Howard was great to work with, at first. But as time went on Howard became more and more of a pain to him and the network because he felt everything should be about him plus his drinking got out of control too. But ABC knew they couldn’t fire him because him and McKay basically MADE the sports division.
