I think it's a pretty cool reward! Good hint to the original Child of Helios (from the Living Ship quest). I've also seen a miniature one floating though an asteroid-field, so I feel it ties in perfectly with the update!
As for the Expeditions themselves, I do like playing them as they do offer great situations different from the normal game. The rewards are just a nice bonus and a 'reason to play'.

@Gustavo Zamborlini I still like the pets but it is a bit disappointing. It's still OK though considering only 23 people working on the game
