I am a “Desert Rat!” Born and raised in Ridgecrest. I am still here but find that the older I get the more this desert heat gets to me! I can’t believe my sister and I use to lay out on the huge rocks east of town to get a tan!😳Been lucky to have not ended up with skin cancer! I believe it is a different kind of sun these days. Makes me think of sizzling bacon…tan to a CRISP! July is not the time to be hiking in Death Valley! It’s named that for a reason! Stay safe and stay hydrated!

The silver pan is reflective. That's why the optical temp sensor didn't read right. Also why it didn't get very hot. Now, if you'd used a black cast iron pan, I think it would have been an entirely different experience. :-) EDIT: Ok, I should have waited til the end of the video before commenting. If your going to cook an egg go down by Furnace Creek and you cook it directly on the asphalt road. The road temperature will be over 200° on a $125° day.
*HOW to STABILIZE* your sail shade: 1) The higher the tension the better. 2) Raise two diagonal points by two feet or more above the other two diagonal points. You will create a saddle shape that is more resistant to the effects of high winds. 3) The higher the tension the better. Hope that helps.👍
Make the low points of the sail shade facing Southwest and Northwest - increases shade and creates a divergent duct for the prevailing breeze - increases velocity and lowers temperature.
@@c.s.mcleod7383 Yes, some half moon cuts can come in handy. Sail shades typically do not have these relief cuts because of the aesthetics and longevity requirements of the installation. Commercial installations are done with wind load in mind and if installed correctly the reliefs are not necessary. At Wonderhussy's compound their issue is proper mounting points. Both Height and strength of termination are the issue. Many thousands of dollars are spent just for the mounting points by professional installation companies. Strength costs money. Lots of it. That said, in this situation if proper mounting configuration can not be achieved then your relief cuts may be a viable option - IF - the fabric can tolerate cuts without reinforcement. I would opt for proper installation -- Because this is to be permanent.

Wet cotton clothes can make being outside about 30° cooler. That's a rough estimate, but I've done it, and it can make a huge difference, the difference between intolerable or even downright dangerous, and very pleasant, even cool. Just hose or pour or sprinkle on some more water whenever you start to dry out. Thicker cotton stays wet longer. A sombrero can also help.
On the heat thing: When I spent July of 1963 at Fort Sill, OK to attend an ROTC summer camp for six weeks. Temps were 102-105 most days with no clouds. As we were physically active playing war games etc. we'd take a ten minute break every hour to re-hydrate and down some salt tablets as it was also very dry heat. I came back with heavily tanned skin. With that and decades of motorcycling in bare arms, I'm now dealing with recurring skin cancer. If you're young and reading this, don't bare your skin to the sun any more than necessary! Skin cancer is easily curable. ..but only if you work at it constantly!

Well, there's good, better, and best. I still think no human in history has come up with a more efficient body cooling system than Mother Nature. And she did it In the heat of Africa, millions of years ago, when she removed our body covering which was trapping heat, and came up with the idea of sweat glands. Voila! So now, it's really simple (practical too). To warm up, cover up. To cool down, UNcover. And to give your sweat glands a little boost, spray some cool water on your all over bare skin. And don't cover it with anything! lol!. The prudes may give you the stink eye, but at least you'll be cooler than they are.
I forgot to mention wind. Afternoons are often windy in the desert West. Strong afternoon winds come like clockwork here this time of year, among others (I'm in the same county as Wonder, but in the northern part). If you had wet cotton clothes on, and it was 100-110° out, and windy, you'd be chillin right down. Way, way down.
President Kennedy's funeral was held on my 3rd birthday (and John Jr.'s 2nd birthday) November 25, 1962. I still remember not quite understanding why everyone was glued to the TV and not celebrating with me.....(I got over my pouts rather quickly when it was explained in terms I could understand). I've been to Death Valley many times since I lived in Vegas in the 80s & 90s. The hottest I've ever experienced there is 122 Degrees in 1991 driving from 395 across the valley to get to Pahrump for the 4th of July picnic. Brisket, cooked in a pit... man that was some good stuff!!🤤

Mini Splits are the only way to go. You having zoning without the expense and aggravation that a central system would plague you with. IMO mini-splits are the future for all residential cooling needs. I ran an AC business for 10 years and back in the day (90's) zoning was all the rage. Nothing but headaches and expense for all who attempted it. I always designed around area cooling needs. Bedrooms vs kitchen living. --> two small systems better than one large. Some of my competition would install elaborate duct zoning systems in conjunction with a large and expensive two speed AC unit. They never worked right. Baffle issues, duct fan issues, over complicated troublesome headaches.

I was an 8 year old boy in 3rd grade and somebody came into the classroom, whispered something to our teacher, then they assembled us in the playground like a fire drill and announced the news and sent us home. To check to see if an egg is good. Drop it in a glass of water and if it sinks and lays on the bottom,then it is still good. If it flotes with one end up a little, then it is stale. hey just a quick tip. i live in north AZ close by the river. i have a harbor freight carport. (about $100 2 years ago.) i hold it down with a t post on each corner. i replaced the cheap tarp with a 10x20 piece of shade cloth. its been working great for over a year. and can take the desert winds out here. its very ez and cheap, or lets say frugal.

I was thinking that the shiny chrome finish on her pan would just reflect the sunlight. Another thing with cast iron pans is that the seasoning on a good cast iron pan is usually dark black, which I would think would absorb the sunlight faster than a reflective surface that's white or chrome.
Your walk on the road reminded me of a time I went to Laughlin in August for a family friend's wedding. It was miserably HOT that day so I went to a casino off the boardwalk after a couple Pina coladas I decided to walk back to the hotel at ten p.m. little did I know it was still around 110 degrees I was wearing flip flops the rubber on my flip flops melted a little and I actually ended up getting blisters on my feet from the hot pavement. 🔥 from that day on even living where I do ( which is also in the desert) I learned my lesson ... blacktop retains heat.
Egg frying on the sidewalk contest is an annual event in Oatman AZ. The question is not if you can do it. The question is who can do it fastest. 118 degree here today.
Get 2.5" to 3" plpe, put that 4th anchor point in it and stand the pipe in the hole you've filled with concrete. Tie the pipe off vertical for a day or two, then you can untie it. Wait at least another week, 2 would be better, for the concrete to cure. Then put shade cover back up.
My thought, you have to use a pole in concrete instead of a tree, there is chance of killing the tree. A strap is for a static hammock short term and not under dynamic pressure long term, probably no guarantee on tree protection.

My father and I -- he a professor, I student always came home for lunch so he could watch an old friend who had a role on the 12:30 Central soap, Days of Our Lives. That's where we were eating sandwiches and watching the soap when Walter Cronkite broke in to tell us shots had been fired at Kennedy's motorcade. We finished lunch, skipped the soap and returned to the campus to join everyone else following televised events for the rest of the day. We also stayed up past midnight at home to watch Neil Armstrong take one step onto the Moon in 1969 when I had come back to go to grad. school on the same campus!

Thinking of driving up north of Mt Shasta soon-ish to check out Plato's caves....! If them bolts are really super secure go with cable and turn buckles then sew a hem around the "tarp" and add grommets then secure through the grommets to the cable

I used to live in Fairbanks,Alaska. At 70 below if you ran from building to building and took a deep breath, you froze your lungs and died. But I would have to go to phoenix to train. I’ve had 60 below to 100 above changes in a few hours. Neither one bothered me. I tended to be naked in the 80 above. I did do a lot of hot springs where I soaked and then rolled in the snow and soaked again!
I go for a 40 minute walk during my lunch break no matter how hot it is in Las Vegas every day. I find it a good way to acclimate my body to extreme heat. It gets pretty intense but I am committed to not to be a giant wuss
Also, that opioid rescue kit is amazing, and you absolutely should have on hand at burns, or other such things, cus, I promise you, sooner or later, you'll save a life.
You should have used a cast iron pan, the black attracts the heat. The one you used probably reflected the sun away. Hope you try the experiment again !!
In Oklahoma where I am it is even hotter than Death Valley and the asphalt is dangerous! I hope you walked on the asphalt at a time it was not too hot. What I like about the desert is it cools at night so you get a break from all that heat. In Oklahoma it does not cool much at night. That is why i wish i lived in the desert instead of the southern us because the night are so cool. So i hope you are having cool nights right now and get a chance to decompress.

Central Valley especially North is just about as bad, it runs a bit cooler, ony around 103-104 degrees, but same issue, out in the morning and evening, but often the evening doesn't get much better, usually around 90s at night, so you stay in in AC cooled comfort! Lol. But Im not there anymore, Im in the PNW and it's kinda cooler, but our summers can get warm, it's 80s right today, and no AC so that can be a bit uncomfortable, but it doen't last long.
I feel for you. It's 3:30 a.m. just outside Boston, Ma. and it's 72 degrees and very humid. I've been to Grand Canyon at end of June and it was up over 100 every day we were there. But dry.way more pleasant than the Maggie's here. Enjoy!

I have been following you for quite a while. If you and you sister intend to remain in Death Valley and you have the financial means, you might want to consider gradually converting your homestead into a self sustaining Earth Ship. It means using various techniques and concepts to cool, heat, utilize recycled resources for water, power generation that are successful in your harsh environment. Ultimately it would be transformed into a fully functioning self-contained biosphere taking advantage of the various elements you would employ. Just a thought.

I worked in Bakersfield, CA for 5+ years at a Refinery. One project required me to use the pyrometer to field check motor temps in the heat of the day. I also checked tank tops and paving. On 118F day asphalt paving was 165F, rusty tank top 140F, white tank tops 120F.
Digital infrared thermometers are really meant for measuring flat-black colored items. Reflective items can throw off the reading. A cast iron pat or pan would have been better for the egg frying test.

Watching your videos I've gotta say, besides your humor and wit, and your great sense for editing, you have a really good ear for the music you add. The set up for the shade cloth is actually really good, but, you need a few more anchors, and they don't have to be up high. The material yall have is perfect, and the fact is, when it gets windy, your shade tarps are gonna do that, sometimes you can adjust the leading edges to mitigate some of the flapping. Had to live under shade cloth , etc, in the imperial Valley, as well as the Mojave, for years.
I would agree with the way it was set up, but I would be a bit concerned about the stoutness of the palm tree point….maybe dig a square meter or two filled with concrete as an anchor point ?
@@3101home indeed, it would be better to not anchor to the palm. Possibly setting a good pole, with an eye bolt up top, running the rope/wire through that to a ground anchor, with a way to tension the line as needed.
Fresh eggs have a natural antibiotic coating on them called "bloom". Because the brood hen will continue to lay eggs and sit on them for 21 days. Commercially sold eggs by law have to be washed which removes the bloom and necessitates refrigeration.
In the late 1950s in Midland Texas, I was in the 3rd grade and it was over 105 and I decided to cook an egg on the sidewalk. The problem you have us the pan. Too much heat exchange going on. I cracked an egg on the dark gray sidewalk in front of out house in Midland about 1pm. The white started cooking slowly but immediately. After about 15 minutes the egg was cooked! I scraped it off the textured sidewalk. It left a dark spot on the sidewalk until we moved a year later. Good old HOT day. We had NO A/C! Only a swamp cooler and fans.
You have the egg coating thing backwards. They are laid with a coating along with other "treasures" that not apetizing to americans and thus do not need refrigeration. In the US eggs are washed and thus the coating is wadhed along with other natual "treasures" in order be more appetizing to American pallets and thus need to chilled.

Except for the important fact that it's rather humid in Austin - easily 4 or 5 times that of DV when I visited my dad there in August a couple years ago. (Like 8% versus 40%). The climate in Texas seems pretty miserable, overall. No wonder it's cheaper to live there I decided, compared to the CA coast.
I had a large tarp hooked to strong bungee cords that allowed plenty of movement even in 60mph winds. Years of sun damage was the only reason I ever had to replace it.

My parents (I'm 68) had a canvas water bag which was hung on the front of our car when camping. It would CHILL the water, even on a hot day!

I still remember not quite understanding why everyone was glued to the TV and not celebrating with me.....(I got over my pouts rather quickly when it was explained in terms I could understand). I've been to Death Valley many times since I lived in Vegas in the 80s & 90s. The hottest I've ever experienced there is 122 Degrees in 1991 driving from 395 across the valley to get to Pahrump for the 4th of July picnic. Brisket, cooked in a pit... man that was some good stuff!!🤤

Mini Splits are the only way to go. You having zoning without the expense and aggravation that a central system would plague you with. IMO mini-splits are the future for all residential cooling needs. I ran an AC business for 10 years and back in the day (90's) zoning was all the rage. Nothing but headaches and expense for all who attempted it. I always designed around area cooling needs. Bedrooms vs kitchen living. --> two small systems better than one large. Some of my competition would install elaborate duct zoning systems in conjunction with a large and expensive two speed AC unit. They never worked right. Baffle issues, duct fan issues, over complicated troublesome headaches.

To check to see if an egg is good. Drop it in a glass of water and if it sinks and lays on the bottom,then it is still good. If it flotes with one end up a little, then it is stale. If it floats, then it is bad. And yes, farm eggs have a natural coating that keeps them fresh without refrigeration. If you wash them it will come off. Keep em coming Wonderhussy. Happy Trials 👍😎👍😉
hey just a quick tip. i live in north AZ close by the river. i have a harbor freight carport. (about $100 2 years ago.) i hold it down with a t post on each corner. i replaced the cheap tarp with a 10x20 piece of shade cloth. its been working great for over a year. and can take the desert winds out here. its very ez and cheap, or lets say frugal.

Worked in the walk-in coolers in the basement of the Ambassador Hotel, and felt eerie walking the basement hallway where he was shot!

I live in Utah and shrink away from 105 F temperatures, I'm pretty sure summer in Death Valley would kill me. I love to go to Death Valley--in January.
I would have used a cast iron pan. Heats quicker and retains heat better.
I was thinking that the shiny chrome finish on her pan would just reflect the sunlight.
Another thing with cast iron pans is that the seasoning on a good cast iron pan is usually dark black, which I would think would absorb the sunlight faster than a reflective surface that's white or chrome.
Your walk on the road reminded me of a time I went to Laughlin in August for a family friend's wedding. It was miserably HOT that day so I went to a casino off the boardwalk after a couple Pina coladas I decided to walk back to the hotel at ten p.m. little did I know it was still around 110 degrees I was wearing flip flops the rubber on my flip flops melted a little and I actually ended up getting blisters on my feet from the hot pavement. 🔥 from that day on even living where I do ( which is also in the desert) I learned my lesson ... blacktop retains heat.
Egg frying on the sidewalk contest is an annual event in Oatman AZ. The question is not if you can do it. The question is who can do it fastest. 118 degree here today.
Get 2.5" to 3" plpe, put that 4th anchor point in it and stand the pipe in the hole you've filled with concrete. Tie the pipe off vertical for a day or two, then you can untie it. Wait at least another week, 2 would be better, for the concrete to cure. Then put shade cover back up.
My thought, you have to use a pole in concrete instead of a tree, there is chance of killing the tree. A strap is for a static hammock short term and not under dynamic pressure long term, probably no guarantee on tree protection.

My father and I -- he a professor, I student always came home for lunch so he could watch an old friend who had a role on the 12:30 Central soap, Days of Our Lives. That's where we were eating sandwiches and watching the soap when Walter Cronkite broke in to tell us shots had been fired at Kennedy's motorcade. We finished lunch, skipped the soap and returned to the campus to join everyone else following televised events for the rest of the day. We also stayed up past midnight at home to watch Neil Armstrong take one step onto the Moon in 1969 when I had come back to go to grad. school on the same campus!

If them bolts are really super secure go with cable and turn buckles then sew a hem around the "tarp" and add grommets then secure through the grommets to the cable

I used to live in Fairbanks,Alaska. At 70 below if you ran from building to building and took a deep breath, you froze your lungs and died. But I would have to go to phoenix to train. I’ve had 60 below to 100 above changes in a few hours. Neither one bothered me. I tended to be naked in the 80 above. I did do a lot of hot springs where I soaked and then rolled in the snow and soaked again!
I go for a 40 minute walk during my lunch break no matter how hot it is in Las Vegas every day. I find it a good way to acclimate my body to extreme heat. It gets pretty intense but I am committed to not to be a giant wuss
Also, that opioid rescue kit is amazing, and you absolutely should have on hand at burns, or other such things, cus, I promise you, sooner or later, you'll save a life.
You should have used a cast iron pan, the black attracts the heat. The one you used probably reflected the sun away. Hope you try the experiment again !!
In Oklahoma where I am it is even hotter than Death Valley and the asphalt is dangerous! I hope you walked on the asphalt at a time it was not too hot.
What I like about the desert is it cools at night so you get a break from all that heat. In Oklahoma it does not cool much at night. That is why i wish i lived in the desert instead of the southern us because the night are so cool. So i hope you are having cool nights right now and get a chance to decompress.

Back then, it seemed like we kept seeing big events on TV. The funerals of the Kennedys and of Martin Luther King. And then in the middle of it all, didn't the Johnson girls get married? Major events that we all watched, sort of, together.

Central Valley especially North is just about as bad, it runs a bit cooler, ony around 103-104 degrees, but same issue, out in the morning and evening, but often the evening doesn't get much better, usually around 90s at night, so you stay in in AC cooled comfort! Lol. But Im not there anymore, Im in the PNW and it's kinda cooler, but our summers can get warm, it's 80s right today, and no AC so that can be a bit uncomfortable, but it doen't last long.
Use shade cloth that is porous so wind will blow through. Possibly doubled-up.
I feel for you. It's 3:30 a.m. just outside Boston, Ma. and it's 72 degrees and very humid. I've been to Grand Canyon at end of June and it was up over 100 every day we were there. But dry.way more pleasant than the Maggie's here. Enjoy!

I have been following you for quite a while. If you and you sister intend to remain in Death Valley and you have the financial means, you might want to consider gradually converting your homestead into a self sustaining Earth Ship. It means using various techniques and concepts to cool, heat, utilize recycled resources for water, power generation that are successful in your harsh environment. Ultimately it would be transformed into a fully functioning self-contained biosphere taking advantage of the various elements you would employ. Just a thought.

Digital infrared thermometers are really meant for measuring flat-black colored items. Reflective items can throw off the reading.

Watching your videos I've gotta say, besides your humor and wit, and your great sense for editing, you have a really good ear for the music you add. Besides having been a musician and photographer, I also did video work for many years, which is why I moved to LA. So I guess I notice that stuff more. I said it before, great job on on what you do. (I do miss socal so I really enjoy the videos). Hope you get your own cable channel show sometime. Way better than most of the junk on there.
The set up for the shade cloth is actually really good, but, you need a few more anchors, and they don't have to be up high. The material yall have is perfect, and the fact is, when it gets windy, your shade tarps are gonna do that, sometimes you can adjust the leading edges to mitigate some of the flapping. Had to live under shade cloth , etc, in the imperial Valley, as well as the Mojave, for years.
I would agree with the way it was set up, but I would be a bit concerned about the stoutness of the palm tree point….maybe dig a square meter or two filled with concrete as an anchor point ?
@@3101home indeed, it would be better to not anchor to the palm. Possibly setting a good pole, with an eye bolt up top, running the rope/wire through that to a ground anchor, with a way to tension the line as needed.
Fresh eggs have a natural antibiotic coating on them called "bloom". Because the brood hen will continue to lay eggs and sit on them for 21 days. Commercially sold eggs by law have to be washed which removes the bloom and necessitates refrigeration.

In the late 1950s in Midland Texas, I was in the 3rd grade and it was over 105 and I decided to cook an egg on the sidewalk. The problem you have us the pan. Too much heat exchange going on. I cracked an egg on the dark gray sidewalk in front of out house in Midland about 1pm. The white started cooking slowly but immediately. After about 15 minutes the egg was cooked! I scraped it off the textured sidewalk. It left a dark spot on the sidewalk until we moved a year later. Good old HOT day. We had NO A/C! Only a swamp cooler and fans.
You have the egg coating thing backwards. They are laid with a coating along with other "treasures" that not apetizing to americans and thus do not need refrigeration. In the US eggs are washed and thus the coating is wadhed along with other natual "treasures" in order be more appetizing to American pallets and thus need to chilled.
Not all Americans are sensitive to the other treasures on an egg..lots of people raising own chickens now. 🙂

made public, and probably never will be. It was the moment when America lost its innocence, and we'll never recover it.
I seem to remember that the whole story is sealed for 70 or 75 years...another 10 to 15 years to wait for it!

It's not that much different from Austin this summer. We've already had 42 days over 100º this year, and there's no end in sight.
Except for the important fact that it's rather humid in Austin - easily 4 or 5 times that of DV when I visited my dad there in August a couple years ago. (Like 8% versus 40%). The climate in Texas seems pretty miserable, overall. No wonder it's cheaper to live there I decided, compared to the CA coast.

I had a large tarp hooked to strong bungee cords that allowed plenty of movement even in 60mph winds. Years of sun damage was the only reason I ever had to replace it.
