I honestly feel bad for squidward. He's my favorite character with his quippy humor. And yeah, he used to get consequences for being a snarky jerk, then you have episodes where spongebob and patrick destroy his house and he has nothing to do with the episode other than to be depressed. Someone said it best "We start the show relating to spongebob, and end relating to squidward".
It’s sad tho like I can relate to squidward and I don’t like working working with a co worker that annoyes the shi out of me comes 7 am and I can guarantee u that people fake call out being sick every 4 weeks cuz there tired of waking up early, or they h8 there job and they just want a break
What's even crazier is that Mr.Krabs is willing to send SpongeBob, who is his only cook, to Squidward house on a work day just to torture Squidward for calling out. Assuming Krabs isn't cooking for the customers, he's more willing to give up money just to send a message to Squidward.
this is exactly why band geeks is such a great episode with a great ending. seeing squidward happy or finally winning at something is why fans like it so much.
Yeah more episodes should be written like band geeks. It's almost written in the same format as this episode, only instead of Squidward being miserable the whole time, the people who would normally ruin his life, are the ones that make it better.
The only time i can say Squidward won ... well had a big break... was that episode where he handled the band for the Super Bowl. That episode and song is still awesome to me to this day
Band Geeks is my fave episode because Squidward faces a lot and is knocked down but rises to the occasion and is rewarded for the hard times he endured. Seeing Squidward win ONE TIME made that episode already the best. And the humor in that episode was top notch, not to mention Sweet Victory is a great song.
"Why doesn't Squidward just quit at this point?" He did, multiple times. But even then, Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob won't leave him alone. They would just come up with a way to *force* him back into the job, even if it means hurting him. So he's damned of he does, damned if he doesn't. Either way, he'd be miserable.
Remember SquidVille episode? Squid was once in a life where he felt happy there. Looks like he could also get a job there. He can stay there indefinitely. He could choose to stay forever. But he chose to return. Of course he still remembers the address of the Squidvile and he can come back any time he wants. But somehow there are no episodes that show him returning to Squidville.

Actually Squidward simply wasn't able to get a job on his own. He had been homeless for months after leaving the Krusty Krab, and it was not Spongebob or Mr. Krab's fault, he just can't find a job elsewhere.
I think constantly watching Squidward being tortured throughout my whole life is the reason I'm often way more empathetic to villains and antagonists then other people.
In the episode _Can You Spare a Dime?_ Squidward does quit his job. However, he is unable to find a new job and becomes homeless. This is why Squidward can not quit his job.

This episode actually is really hurtful bc it shows that people can't take day off for their mental problems, only when they are physically sick. And it's not like he was faking sickness just to be lazy, he wanted to take day off to be himself: paint, make music, relax, it was his mental health day.

That’s the massive issue with the puritan linked American “work ethic” I say this as someone who is religious. The whole “working is next to godliness” is the biggest load of bullshit I’ve ever seen. We need to be more cognizant of peoples mental health, our god would want us to be sure our neighbors are taken care of mentally, physically, and emotionally. It’s agitating to see this whole “if you can walk you can work” mindset because I come from the Amish, which are close to puritans, they have the SAME mindset and it’s just plain stupid. I feel like Plankton fell into the same trap as Squidward... in Friend or Foe, it's revealed that Mr. Krabs and Plankton created the formula together for their own selfish reasons, and in the end, Plankton ended up getting the short end of the stick. He deserves that formula just as much as Krabs.

It'll fail miserably.. again. Squidward is somehow condemed to be near SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs or whoever. He has even been to a completely other town and it still fell apart due to SpongeBob meeting up.
The fact episodes like this are being made now. Squidward faking sick because he knows it sucks to work at the Krusty krab and just wants a break from it, then Mr krabs getting spongebob to “take care” of him. Sponge Bob was just putting his long nose in Squidward’s business while squidward was suffering from it and spongebob just continues to make him suffer. Then of course when he’s basically forced into going back, his nightmare becomes a reality. It really feels like they writers think “Squidward torture + wacky (not in a good way) animation= Content”.

Better episode idea: Squidward pretends to be sick and SpongeBob goes to take care of him. He expect SpongeBob to be annoying but he actually does a good job taking care of him. Squidward feels happier and less stress about going to work the next day. Why can't we just have a wholesome episode?
Reason I stopped watching spongeBob since a small part of season 9? That's it, right there, it just got worse, and worse, and worse. The only episodes I treat myself to are the ones that inge from the small part of season 9 that were actually good, and that's it. Because its honestly become so painful to watch.

There has been a lot of times where I wanted to see squidward win. There were even some older episodes where I would root for squidward and go against SpongeBob

I think squidward was always meant to be the most relatable. The fact that he always gets beat down for no reason is supposed to show how messed up life can get. How if you don't go along with peoples games, no matter what you do, people will always see you as the bad guy.

Squidward is probably one of the few main characters that is actually a decent person. He may be grumpy and mean at times but that isnt really that bad, compared to how spongebob is always destructive and endangers people's lives (mrs. puff), Patrick most of the time just seems stupid but he can get mean to a much more destructive point than squidward (abusing squidward and selling his ink in a later episode), Krabs over-works his employees and even sold spongebob's soul, and plankton forced everyone in the town to wear buckets on their heads and come to his restauraunt.
The thing is, this is life for many. Work a crappy job, customers are mean, managers demand you work til you die, no time for life and no energy for fun. Squidward is so fun to watch because he says and does all the things people in his position wish they could say or do. Squidward is every person who has ever worked in food service.
yeah the whole "why doesn't he quit" just seems kind of silly and out of touch. he can't quit. he doesn't have a choice. that's the life and reality of many, many people and it feels sort of disingenuous to go "well why don't they just quit?" lol
The whole concept of Squidward constantly suffering isn’t necessarily for laughs but to show how poorly fast food employees are treated and how difficult it can be to get out of that cycle. Fast food employees deserve our respect and I learned that through Spongebob no matter how stupid that may seem.
@@remaks3929 Well, working in customer service is pretty much the same. I imagine food service is worse though. All the stories I’ve heard from people who work in fast food. You’d be surprised how incompetent and rude customers are. I had a lady get mad at me because she went behind my register and I told her not to. Had another guy come in and harass one of my coworkers. He was white, old and carried a golf club around. Was being racist to our customers (they were Indian, he was hitting on the woman and the man got angry because that was his wife. Dude said “Sorry man, thought that was your daughter. You know how Indians are cradle robbers”) and kept trying to hit on my coworker (who looked like she was 12-14. You had to be at least 18 to work there but most customers don’t know that). The coworker from my department went to hers, cussed the guy out, called security cause he was escalating, and the police had to show up. Turns out he was banned from like 8 stores in a span of 6 months because of this shit and kept stalking the women. The girl had to work in the back with one of my good friends. Poor girl, it was only her 2nd day. We didn’t see her after that, guess she quit. Asked my friend what happened to her and he said he had no idea. Those are just two instances. I have plenty more stories. Was only there for 3 months. One thing about that job, there was never a boring day. Idk what was in the air because I haven’t had any experiences like that anywhere else I worked. Most days were chill. But that place… idk what the hell was up. The customers, coworkers, and bosses especially was on crack.
Right!? I, and I'm sure a lot of other people as well, can actually relate to the episode's dream because WE'VE had dreams like that, all because of the hellish place we worked or went to school to (and oftentimes still are to this day). Jay's line about the dream being based on Squidward's awful reality is so dead-on to that it's scary, because this is EXACTLY what happens to some people in real life. Not the cartoon aspects, but being stuck in a job you hate with terrible people that hound you over problems THEY create and blame you for. And those people rarely get justice because so many people value money over other people's lives. What Squidward's dealing with is freaking Post Traumatic Stress Disorder! It' not "like PTSD", no it IS PTSD. Those who read this and go "pfft, young people can't get PTSD", or "only soldiers have to deal with it", *THEN YOU CAN SHOVE IT.* I've been diagnosed with it since I was a teen and for EIGHT YEARS I've been dealing with nightmares about the worst of the schools I went to. Even now, with better medication, it's still not 100% fixed and it might never be because I'm not sure that's possible. Anyone at ANY age is able to get PTSD, people, and it can have destructive impacts on ANYBODY. Just from this review this episode disturbs me. Just... why are they so insistent on torturing a character that just wants to be left alone? Why? Why is that too much to ask, just to be left in peace? Squidward isn't incapable of being in the wrong or hurting somebody, but the trouble he has to deal with, the "retribution", is way too disproportionate. Especially those times when he's not hurting anybody AT ALL! What, is he the staff's punching bag? A character to take their anger and stress out on? It's totally fine to make a private character for that purpose, but first: Squidward was NOT originally created with that intention, and second: instead of keeping this to themselves they are instead making absolutely sure that kids see this trash, which can lead to many of them thinking that it's okay to torment quiet, introverted people on a daily basis JUST because they want to be left alone. Don't think it's possible? This is a strange world, people, and it's best to keep an open mind.

Not just Bosses... to be honest Society itself often have still stigmatas and prejustice against people with Mental health issues. Especially with things like Ptsd (like Gold explained good that EVERYONE can have it) or well... Depression. It is one of the most common mental health problems but often dont taken seriously. Becauce most react "You are just sad stop bitching" or worse think you just fish for attention....
“Why doesn’t Squidward quit at this point?” Well, aside from the show being ended or whatever and in terms of story, from what I know Squidward pretty much has no other option to live his life considering he quit once in an episode and instantly lost everything he ever had.

@@N54MyBeloved it’s not even that he’s a loser, he simply has huge aspirations for himself, but fails to recognize his flaws. Squidward’s failures fall on him with his high opinion of himself. I don’t believe Squidward is a loser. He’s an aspiring artist, musician, and glamorizes a better life for himself. But he needs to be humbled and relinquish his envy of others such as Squilliam Fancyson. I think Squidward could go anywhere, but he has to change or he’ll never go where he wishes to be.

That strudel scene is more powerful than is expressed . They imply by pointing out the multiple “layers” that he made a butter laminate, this is by no means a simple quick breakfast. It might have taken squidward 3 days to make that strudel that Patrick ate with no remorse. Further making me believe that squidward is in his own personal hell.

In conclusion, this episode is an allegory for what most people deal with in retail and try to avoid at retail but it happens either way. I’m dealing with annoying customers, co workers and a boss that pays me next to nothing. So it’s best to quit for the mental health.

Honestly Squidward's dream hit me way too hard for it to be a coincidence. I work in fast food, and the shit I put up with actually has given me nightmares that keep me up and make my job even worse. I've given up so many of my hobbies just so I can keep getting paid, and I barely have time or energy to contact my doctors for my allergy, eczema, and asthma medication, which results in a shittier time and feeds back into the cycle. I'm in a position where I can't just quit, since I don't want to be without some form of income, but I desperately want to leave so badly. I feel for Squidward on a spiritual level. He doesn't deserve any of the shit he gets, and it's all because his coworker is incompetent, his boss is greedy, and customers are braindead. Shit that I also have to deal with daily. In both of our lives, the job would at least be bearable if those three factors didn't exist.
I have been through those same struggles beore, and let me tell you, your health comes first, you'll make it through this, but you must value your health even if it risks your payment, it's not worth dropping to the floor in a deadly stress induced condition over I've lost people that way

Even as a kid I've always wanted an episode where Squidward gets lucky and at least happy for a day (A whole day, kinda like the Squidward's Tiki land episode) , the plot just keeps bullying him. And till this day, I know it's rare to happen so I just wanna give him a hug.
To be completely honest here, I cried at the end of the Tiki Island episode. But in my defense, I was like 6-7 when I saw it. I just felt so sad that the happiness that Squidward felt and the good time he had was taken away from him so quickly.
There actually was an episode like that in Tom and Jerry. In medieval times Tom was basically in charge of protecting of some food for party, Jerry and his annoying cousin obviously came in and ruined it despite Tom not provoking them and Tom was fokin beheaded in the end for failing.
Then the one where Tom was playing the piano and Jerry was constantly annoying him which understandably caused him to retaliate. Then of course at the end of the episode jerry comes out on top
Some tom and Jerry episodes are just that sorta bullshit where Tom just tries to do his own thing and jerry instigates and in the end tom gets punished
From experience, I take this episode as an accurate representation of what the American retail/food workforce is like. Bosses are rough on you, customers are worse. After a while you can develop symptoms of ptsd, and have a mental break. Some people think the job is "easy" (which is why low minimum wage is okay in their eyes), but retail and food are some of the toughest jobs. You're on your feet all day, getting hollered at by people who are angry at you, for something out of your control, you barely get paid enough for rent, and in some places, you go to another crappy retail/food job after, just to make sure you can make rent. This whole episode just screams that squidward is having a mental break due to how he's treated. 🙃 spongebob doesn't get treated well by krabs there either, but he's too oblivious and nïeve notice. 🤷♀️
I'm pretty sure Squidward has quit multiple times in the show and he just keeps coming back. He either comes back because he needs the money or because of plot convenience.

Well he had a chance to quit and go with Jim on the Jim episode because Jim cared for squidward and wanted him and Jim to start their own restaurant. Squidward didn’t take that and ended up stuck as a cashier because he had nothing to fall back on. He had the chance to quit but didn’t take it

as a child, i was always very disturbed and sad to see squidward get shit on all the time. some of my favorites were when spongebob and him were able to work together and squidward had a glimmer or character development. i also never poercieved him as lazy, tbh to me he was always just the sane one. he sees how illogical everything is but is always put in situations with those people. he works really hard and has a lot of really awesome hobbies and he never gets honored or rewarded for it

Especially seeing as most of those thousands of jobs either require specific certification, specific education, years of experience, or just knowing someone in that particular field. Many people do what you do and either end up losing their home or having to go back to their original job. Also money provides security which is one of the key tenants for happiness. The idea that money doesn't provide happiness is a ridiculous idea often said by people who do have money. Go to a single mother living pay check to pay check. Stressing every day whether if she can feed her children today, and tell her that she wouldn't be happier with money to pay the bills and eat.

My guy might as well at least look around for a new job and apply, although considering how poorly every single thing he tries to do to take control of his own life is immediately and irreversibly ruined by Spongebob and sometimes Patrick too, I doubt it would work out. I grew up with spongebob, as a kid i always felt bad for squidward. Now that i work in retail his nightmare felt so real, that industry is as toxic as his nightmare. I literally had that nightmare before going to work that i actually became sick and fainted. Its motivating me to quit cause i or squidward doesn't deserve the mental torment.

Y'know, I actually do remember a good amount of Tom & Jerry episodes where Tom's minding his business and Jerry starts problems. Heck, I remember seeing on at least 2 occasions that Tom just straight up caught Jerry and the episode ended with triumphant music and everything
Real talk, as someone who felt stuck in the exact situation as that episode before Covid managed to give me an out, I think I can offer some insight to his character/what the writers might be doing with Squidward's character. 1) Dreaming about your workplace often means that you already spend too much time there (or that your subconcious self believes so, at least). Now, having deadass actual *NIGHTMARES* about going to work, especially like the one shown in the episode, are often an indicator that you are on the verge of a mental break regarding somewhere that you both conciously and subconciously believe you have been far too much and causes you great stress. Just wanted to say that based on my experience. (I'm literally on pills to treat a recent Anxiety Disorder caused from the stress of the job I felt trapped at, and tbh, i had SO MANY of those nightmares.) 2) Squidward is shown to be a functioning adult paying for his house still, having expensive hobbies, and enjoying the finer things in life. He NEEDS a job. The problem is, he more than likely can't find the time to find a new job (as it's shown he already has a tough time getting even a sick day) OR he's in a Sunk Cost Fallacy about working at the Krusty Krab. Hidden option 3 is both, as was my case, but given this is a kid's show, I'm trying not to put too much thought into it (despite this commemt). 3) There's the possibility that some of the writers are using Squidward as a sort of stand-in for how they feel with their job. Working for one of the biggest media companies, on one of the most recognizable shows... I can imagine that shit gets pretty damn stressful. I'm not saying this is the answer to why Squidward is suffering more and more for no real rhyme or reason like the older episodes, but I do think it'd explain a lot. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

I quit a job within a month of having a dream where i was doing my work at home(as in, work was invading my non-work time), having customers invading my personal space, with one person being so absolutely infuriating that i pushed them out of the way and woke up in horror as they started to fall down the stairs. This was after a coworker threatened me and i "mysteriously" had a slashed tire not long after, and one day when i got into my car and just screamed my frustration. As for that last thing, i'm sure the person in the car next to me was aware i was a worker there and probably decided *not* to go into the store. I screamed, stared ahead for a few mins, then just drove off. Yup. Good times. Good times. Leaving that job was honestly the only thing i could have done at that point.
The last time I felt so empty and sad about an episode was Ink Lemonade. Squidward gets tortured for no reason and not even in a comedic way, I just felt uncomfortable.
SpongeBob final episode Squidward enters the Krusty Krab with a shotgun and shoots Mr Krabs and Spongebob, alongside the customer in the restaurant. Afterwards, Squidward turns the gun on himself and the episode ends with the sound of the shotgun being fired.

Poor Squidward he's so relatable to so many people who goes through what we all do everyday. When I was younger Squidward was my least favorite character but now that I'm older he's like us in so many ways, I hope he finds happiness one day.
What they should’ve done is a Ferris Bueller’s Day off scenario. Make Squidward play hooky from work (not because of a PTSD like experience, just cause he’s being lazy) and have Mr. Krabs send Spongebob out to go follow Squidward around (like the principal in the movie). They could’ve done a whole spoof, made some good slapstick, and not made the show seem mean spirited.
Squidward literally has PTSD and depression, he is literally the saddest character of all animation, I literally pop a blood vessel every time I see Spongebob annoy Squidward, it is physically painful to watch him torture Squidward.

He tried to quit in one episode (that I recall), and ended up on the streets. Also that nightmare indicates (to me) that his job may have caused him to develop some kind of anxiety and maybe even PTSD. Although, dreams are weird.

Yeah, in the pre-movie era, SpongeBob only bothers Squidward like a normal neighbour and only heads to his home when necessary. In the new ones though, SpongeBob literally stalks him and would probably result in him getting a restraining order (which, I'll admit, the restraining order episode would make sense no matter how bad it was). Classic SpongeBob acted more like a decent human being, therefore making him more likeable.
Idea: squidward yells at spongebob too loud. Spongebob finally leaves him alone. But he leaves him alone TOO much. Then he would have to dral with inconveniences with spongebob pretending he does not exsist.
In the episode where Spongebob has a dream about the middle ages, in the scene where Squidward's (something) great grandfather is thrown into the dungeon, I remember him saying he curses his future grandson. I think this is why Squidward has such a miserable life.
It wasn't a dream Squidly (Squidward's great grandfather) who was a jester was put in the dungeon for playing bad music and when SpongeBob and Patrick got launched back to the jousting thing squidly is with them

I know that he was kept there for plot convience and suppose to be the straight him but in all honesty I sympathize for him so much because he's has to go through so much shit.
Actually why can't this man make some paintings to sell to people or sell his paintings that he already made to the public or start his own art business with going back to college,getting his degree in art and culture or either record is claranet music, clarinet or vocal choir he would make a fortune in any of those because in several episodes of Spongebob we see he excels in arts, verbal vocals and music. To bad for wasted potential.

I feel like Plankton fell into the same trap as Squidward... in Friend or Foe, it's revealed that Mr. Krabs and Plankton created the formula together for their own selfish reasons, and in the end, Plankton ended up getting the short end of the stick. He deserves that formula just as much as Krabs.

The fact episodes like this are being made now. Squidward faking sick because he knows it sucks to work at the Krusty krab and just wants a break from it, then Mr krabs getting spongebob to “take care” of him. Sponge Bob was just putting his long nose in Squidward’s business while squidward was suffering from it and spongebob just continues to make him suffer. Then of course when he’s basically forced into going back, his nightmare becomes a reality. It really feels like they writers think “Squidward torture + wacky (not in a good way) animation= Content”.

Squidward is probably one of the few main characters that is actually a decent person. He may be grumpy and mean at times but that isnt really that bad, compared to how spongebob is always destructive and endangers people's lives (mrs. puff), Patrick most of the time just seems stupid but he can get mean to a much more destructive point than squidward (abusing squidward and selling his ink in a later episode), Krabs over-works his employees and even sold spongebob's soul, and plankton forced everyone in the town to wear buckets on their heads and come to his restauraunt.
The thing is, this is life for many. Work a crappy job, customers are mean, managers demand you work til you die, no time for life and no energy for fun. Squidward is so fun to watch because he says and does all the things people in his position wish they could say or do. Squidward is every person who has ever worked in food service.
Or retail. Works too.

The whole concept of Squidward constantly suffering isn’t necessarily for laughs but to show how poorly fast food employees are treated and how difficult it can be to get out of that cycle. Fast food employees deserve our respect and I learned that through Spongebob no matter how stupid that may seem.
Yes as long as they treat YOU nicely. If a fast food employee is just a jerk then they deserve to serve all the karens.
Similar how it is to work at a supermarket. So many people look down at use even we probaly have ONE of the most important jobs in society.

@@remaks3929 Well, working in customer service is pretty much the same. I imagine food service is worse though. All the stories I’ve heard from people who work in fast food. You’d be surprised how incompetent and rude customers are.
I had a lady get mad at me because she went behind my register and I told her not to. Had another guy come in and harass one of my coworkers. He was white, old and carried a golf club around. Was being racist to our customers (they were Indian, he was hitting on the woman and the man got angry because that was his wife. Dude said “Sorry man, thought that was your daughter. You know how Indians are cradle robbers”) and kept trying to hit on my coworker (who looked like she was 12-14. You had to be at least 18 to work there but most customers don’t know that). The coworker from my department went to hers, cussed the guy out, called security cause he was escalating, and the police had to show up. Turns out he was banned from like 8 stores in a span of 6 months because of this shit and kept stalking the women. The girl had to work in the back with one of my good friends. Poor girl, it was only her 2nd day. We didn’t see her after that, guess she quit. Asked my friend what happened to her and he said he had no idea.
Those are just two instances. I have plenty more stories. Was only there for 3 months. One thing about that job, there was never a boring day. Idk what was in the air because I haven’t had any experiences like that anywhere else I worked. Most days were chill. But that place… idk what the hell was up. The customers, coworkers, and bosses especially was on crack.

Right!? I, and I'm sure a lot of other people as well, can actually relate to the episode's dream because WE'VE had dreams like that, all because of the hellish place we worked or went to school to (and oftentimes still are to this day).
Jay's line about the dream being based on Squidward's awful reality is so dead-on to that it's scary, because this is EXACTLY what happens to some people in real life. Not the cartoon aspects, but being stuck in a job you hate with terrible people that hound you over problems THEY create and blame you for. And those people rarely get justice because so many people value money over other people's lives.
What Squidward's dealing with is freaking Post Traumatic Stress Disorder! It' not "like PTSD", no it IS PTSD. Those who read this and go "pfft, young people can't get PTSD", or "only soldiers have to deal with it", *THEN YOU CAN SHOVE IT.* I've been diagnosed with it since I was a teen and for EIGHT YEARS I've been dealing with nightmares about the worst of the schools I went to. Even now, with better medication, it's still not 100% fixed and it might never be because I'm not sure that's possible. Anyone at ANY age is able to get PTSD, people, and it can have destructive impacts on ANYBODY.
Just from this review this episode disturbs me. Just... why are they so insistent on torturing a character that just wants to be left alone? Why? Why is that too much to ask, just to be left in peace? Squidward isn't incapable of being in the wrong or hurting somebody, but the trouble he has to deal with, the "retribution", is way too disproportionate. Especially those times when he's not hurting anybody AT ALL!
What, is he the staff's punching bag? A character to take their anger and stress out on? It's totally fine to make a private character for that purpose, but first: Squidward was NOT originally created with that intention, and second: instead of keeping this to themselves they are instead making absolutely sure that kids see this trash, which can lead to many of them thinking that it's okay to torment quiet, introverted people on a daily basis JUST because they want to be left alone.
Don't think it's possible? This is a strange world, people, and it's best to keep an open mind.

That strudel scene is more powerful than is expressed . They imply by pointing out the multiple “layers” that he made a butter laminate, this is by no means a simple quick breakfast. It might have taken squidward 3 days to make that strudel that Patrick ate with no remorse. Further making me believe that squidward is in his own personal hell.

In conclusion, this episode is an allegory for what most people deal with in retail and try to avoid at retail but it happens either way. I’m dealing with annoying customers, co workers and a boss that pays me next to nothing.

Honestly Squidward's dream hit me way too hard for it to be a coincidence.
I work in fast food, and the shit I put up with actually has given me nightmares that keep me up and make my job even worse.
I've given up so many of my hobbies just so I can keep getting paid, and I barely have time or energy to contact my doctors for my allergy, eczema, and asthma medication, which results in a shittier time and feeds back into the cycle.
I'm in a position where I can't just quit, since I don't want to be without some form of income, but I desperately want to leave so badly.
I feel for Squidward on a spiritual level. He doesn't deserve any of the shit he gets, and it's all because his coworker is incompetent, his boss is greedy, and customers are braindead. Shit that I also have to deal with daily.
In both of our lives, the job would at least be bearable if those three factors didn't exist.

There actually was an episode like that in Tom and Jerry. In medieval times Tom was basically in charge of protecting of some food for party, Jerry and his annoying cousin obviously came in and ruined it despite Tom not provoking them and Tom was fokin beheaded in the end for failing.
Then the one where Tom was playing the piano and Jerry was constantly annoying him which understandably caused him to retaliate. Then of course at the end of the episode jerry comes out on top

From experience, I take this episode as an accurate representation of what the American retail/food workforce is like. Bosses are rough on you, customers are worse. After a while you can develop symptoms of ptsd, and have a mental break. Some people think the job is "easy" (which is why low minimum wage is okay in their eyes), but retail and food are some of the toughest jobs. You're on your feet all day, getting hollered at by people who are angry at you, for something out of your control, you barely get paid enough for rent, and in some places, you go to another crappy retail/food job after, just to make sure you can make rent. This whole episode just screams that squidward is having a mental break due to how he's treated. 🙃 spongebob doesn't get treated well by krabs there either, but he's too oblivious and nïeve notice. 🤷♀️

as a child, i was always very disturbed and sad to see squidward get shit on all the time. some of my favorites were when spongebob and him were able to work together and squidward had a glimmer or character development. i also never poercieved him as lazy, tbh to me he was always just the sane one. he sees how illogical everything is but is always put in situations with those people. he works really hard and has a lot of really awesome hobbies and he never gets honored or rewarded for it

Especially seeing as most of those thousands of jobs either require specific certification, specific education, years of experience, or just knowing someone in that particular field. Many people do what you do and either end up losing their home or having to go back to their original job.
Also money provides security which is one of the key tenants for happiness. The idea that money doesn't provide happiness is a ridiculous idea often said by people who do have money. Go to a single mother living pay check to pay check. Stressing every day whether if she can feed her children today, and tell her that she wouldn't be happier with money to pay the bills and eat.

That said, for how horrendously Mr. Krabs pays them, I doubt the paycheck is doing all that much for Squidward, lol. My guy might as well at least look around for a new job and apply, although considering how poorly every single thing he tries to do to take control of his own life is immediately and irreversibly ruined by Spongebob and sometimes Patrick too, I doubt it would work out. Squidward probably doesn't try to leave because it seems pointless to try when it probably won't work and will cause him more trouble anyway.

Real talk, as someone who felt stuck in the exact situation as that episode before Covid managed to give me an out, I think I can offer some insight to his character/what the writers might be doing with Squidward's character.
1) Dreaming about your workplace often means that you already spend too much time there (or that your subconcious self believes so, at least). Now, having deadass actual *NIGHTMARES* about going to work, especially like the one shown in the episode, are often an indicator that you are on the verge of a mental break regarding somewhere that you both conciously and subconciously believe you have been far too much and causes you great stress. Just wanted to say that based on my experience. (I'm literally on pills to treat a recent Anxiety Disorder caused from the stress of the job I felt trapped at, and tbh, i had SO MANY of those nightmares.)
2) Squidward is shown to be a functioning adult paying for his house still, having expensive hobbies, and enjoying the finer things in life. He NEEDS a job. The problem is, he more than likely can't find the time to find a new job (as it's shown he already has a tough time getting even a sick day) OR he's in a Sunk Cost Fallacy about working at the Krusty Krab. Hidden option 3 is both, as was my case, but given this is a kid's show, I'm trying not to put too much thought into it (despite this commemt).
3) There's the possibility that some of the writers are using Squidward as a sort of stand-in for how they feel with their job. Working for one of the biggest media companies, on one of the most recognizable shows... I can imagine that shit gets pretty damn stressful. I'm not saying this is the answer to why Squidward is suffering more and more for no real rhyme or reason like the older episodes, but I do think it'd explain a lot.

I quit a job within a month of having a dream where i was doing my work at home(as in, work was invading my non-work time), having customers invading my personal space, with one person being so absolutely infuriating that i pushed them out of the way and woke up in horror as they started to fall down the stairs.
This was after a coworker threatened me and i "mysteriously" had a slashed tire not long after, and one day when i got into my car and just screamed my frustration. As for that last thing, i'm sure the person in the car next to me was aware i was a worker there and probably decided *not* to go into the store. I screamed, stared ahead for a few mins, then just drove off. Yup. Good times. Good times.
Leaving that job was honestly the only thing i could have done at that point.
The last time I felt so empty and sad about an episode was Ink Lemonade. Squidward gets tortured for no reason and not even in a comedic way, I just felt uncomfortable.

Squidward enters the Krusty Krab with a shotgun and shoots Mr Krabs and Spongebob, alongside the customer in the restaurant. Afterwards, Squidward turns the gun on himself and the episode ends with the sound of the shotgun being fired.

What they should’ve done is a Ferris Bueller’s Day off scenario. Make Squidward play hooky from work (not because of a PTSD like experience, just cause he’s being lazy) and have Mr. Krabs send Spongebob out to go follow Squidward around (like the principal in the movie). They could’ve done a whole spoof, made some good slapstick, and not made the show seem mean spirited.

In the new ones though, SpongeBob literally stalks him and would probably result in him getting a restraining order (which, I'll admit, the restraining order episode would make sense no matter how bad it was).
Classic SpongeBob acted more like a decent human being, therefore making him more likeable.

Idea: squidward yells at spongebob too loud. Spongebob finally leaves him alone. But he leaves him alone TOO much. Then he would have to dral with inconveniences with spongebob pretending he does not exsist.
In the episode where Spongebob has a dream about the middle ages, in the scene where Squidward's (something) great grandfather is thrown into the dungeon, I remember him saying he curses his future grandson. I think this is why Squidward has such a miserable life.

Are we forgetting the time that Squidward DID quit after Krabs accused him of stealing his first nickel? Squidward ended up being homeless and being a freeloader in Spongebob's house...
He also quit and worked at the chum bucket one time, and was actually successful until he messed up his recipe.

Squidward may not have much financial income to move to a new neighborhood, if he did he would zoom the hell out by the moment he had enough of some sweet dough (cash).
I know that he was kept there for plot convience and suppose to be the straight him but in all honesty I sympathize for him so much because he's has to go through so much shit.

Actually why can't this man make some paintings to sell to people or sell his paintings that he already made to the public or start his own art business with going back to college,getting his degree in art and culture or either record is claranet music, clarinet or vocal choir he would make a fortune in any of those because in several episodes of Spongebob we see he excels in arts, verbal vocals and music. To bad for wasted potential.

Imagine if they wrote this episode to just end up being casual shenanigans between the characters instead of Squidward being hurt psychologically and physically.
Every time I see an episode like this, I'd ignore it for eternity. I don't like the fact that Squidward has to suffer through all of this. He deserves better. RIGHT!
