I have a hard time doing double crochets with the blanket yarn. I do like half doubles, though. The moss stitch is great with it too.
What size book are you using with it? I like to go up a couple of hook sizes so it drapes better.

For the squares I’ve been using N 10mm. I did make some with a 15mm a few years ago and they are really airy. Just experiment to find what works best for you. It also depends on how dense you want your blanket to be.
