Reserved, ice-cold college dean, Susan Middlecott (Rosalind Russell) is all business, and is someone who believes that there is no time for romance, and can't be bothered with love. However, when Susan meets charming British astronomy professor Alec Stevenson (Ray Milland), it seems that romance could be in the air.
PLOT AND REVIEW :
A Woman of Distinction is a 1950 American screwball romantic black and white comedy film directed by Edward Buzzell, starring Rosalind Russell, Ray Milland and Edmund Gwenn. It was produced and distributed by Columbia Pictures.
GENRE : Black and White Classic Romantic Comedy, Which has been converted to a Colorized Movie using AI technology.
A Woman of Distinction isn't one of the better known films, despite the fact it is a great Rosalind Russell comedy. Personally, it is better than His Girl Friday anytime! She plays her specialty - A college dean with an adopted daughter, who feels that she has a complete family unit, with a doting father, Edmund Gwenn, who doesn't share her view. With a perpetual twinkle in his eye, he constantly teases her about a woman's completion being found with a man.
Alec is a professor visiting America on a lecture tour, and when a nosy newspaper woman, Janis Carter, writes an incriminating story connecting Ray with Roz, everyone thinks they're having an affair. Neither is happy about it, but how can they discourage the newspaper story when they're constantly seen together?
There are so many hilarious scenes in this movie, and if you are a Roz fan and haven't seen it yet, pop some corn and get ready for a very enjoyable matinee.
There are some great screwball moments, as well.
For a great mix of light and naughty fun, check out A Woman of Distinction.

These two actors Ray Milland and Rosalind Russell are two of my favorite actors. I enjoy when both are in the same film they have so much chemistry and love how they interact in this film tremendously funny!! LOL
Personally, I found no fault with the color, sound, or the movie!! I thoroughly enjoyed this film!! Thank you.
Am glad that you enjoyed it!
Colorization must be very hard.
Just as good it’s the actors that count-black or white
@@terriseaton3049... Some, yes... but for most b&w movies, that is clear, then the AI apps do a decent job.... Yes, it is time consuming, but worth it...
@@rowenamarvin9697 True....
Old such movies are so nice, simple and entertaining 🎉❤😂
I always love Rosalind Russell--so classy and yet so funny! It was nice to see Ray Milland in a comedy because I only know him from Dial M for Murder.
Delighted to see Rosalind Russell, it’s been a while.
Am glad you liked it ... Do also go over the other Roz movies... Am sure you will like them...

Luisa her little daughter is so adorable! She adds so much to the movie!
Yes...Louisa (Mary Jane Saunders) did many fabulous tv series and the one I remember was something to do about wells fargo... In this movie, she is an absolute darling...

Amazing, the news media hasn't changed a bit.
😊... No, not the least - in fact it has only gotten worse with small publishing houses (ie., the social media)....Have a good weekend..
Rosalind Russell has always been one of my favorite actresses! And, Of course, Edmund Gwenn!! Mostly because of "Miracle on 34th Street" 🎅
Oh Yes....and the early Lassie...
Very good movie even it was produced over 80 years ago!
This is something I find haard to believe for most vintage movies....they are so good even today...
er - 70. Let 's not exaggerate.
@@bewareofpigeons lol.... we have a mathematician among us... thanks, for the correction...
Madcap and classy rolled into one.
Roz... was a rare, unique character...😊
It seems the press can still ruin someone's life with ill gotten gossip
@@kathrynkraft3848 They have found an even great ally in Social Media... who don't even check for facts....
Gossip was alway's considered evil. The nightly news "was" considered absolute factual. That all changed when evil decided they could control what people heard, and be sure to repeat it vehemently
fun an lite hearted it wazzz... delighted to watch!!!!
True, an absolute delight.... All the actors were so good in it....
Very enjoyable!

Wonderful movie
Yes Indeed...Have a good weekend..
Many compare Rosalind and Lucy’s roles as Mame Dennis. I absolutely Love Lucille’s version. However I’m delighted to find them both in this movie. Russell and Ball are fantastic actresses.
Yes, both of them are wonderful actresses... and if someone were to ask me whom i liked better, i truly would be at a loss of words.....Each of them had their own style...
Nice comedy. TFS ❤❤😊😊

Roz Russell fine Actress
Absolutely true..
Great movie
@@jenniferpullen-yl4mf Yes, very much so...
But, I was surprised that so many people liked it...
While I am more of a 1940s,1950s, film noir fan (of course apart from Roz, Lucy, Burns,... Aww, I just like all of them ) - it is difficult to find what people really like (I have viewers from Portugal, Turkey and Moscow, requesting me to put their movies....
Thank you for the comment, or I wont stop talking.... Shall catch up in your next comment...
Cheers....
Great movie! And surprised to Lucille Ball in the beginning and Mr. Moonie ( what's his real name again?) as ticket master.
One thing I noticed is the bright yellow in white areas. Is this because of going from black & white to color?
Firstly, Colorized Flix claims no ownership of any images, soundtracks, incidental music or footage that have been uploaded. Even the colorized material is the property of the original creator(s) and owner(s), and colorization is only for the purpose of discussion and critical thought, and promotion of AI apps. Besides, Colorized Flix wants to give newcomers a fun way to learn about AI and AI apps.
Regarding your query - [ One thing I noticed is the bright yellow in white areas. Is this because of going from black & white to color?] - Am glad you noticed the difference - but once you begin to study many colorized films, a little deeply, you will begin to see the many changes.. So, I am not in a position to comment.
But just be informed, when colorizing a movie, the AI app can only hypothesize and generate new pixels, creating visually striking colors and enhancing facial outlines based on its established coding, and hence the name colorized movies.
Enjoy..
So it looks like the media has always been disgusting and full of lies😂
@@mia795 Not necessarily... there are the good ones and the bad ones... but Social Media is something one has no control...
A great comedy. 😅
Indeed it is! A rocker - they come once in a century....
1:24:06 The note reads, "Grab Alec while you can. Today's hot water may be tomorrow's icicle."
Thank you !!!
Susan is adamant about not having or needing a man. To the point of being an iceberg, as her father, Professor Mark "J.M." Middlecott says (played by Edmund Gwenn). Alec isn't turned off to women or marriage - he just isn't actively pursuing a mate.
J.M., "It's too bad that two nice people, like you, who should get together, get together and then don't get together." Alec, "Well you see, your daughter isn't very get together-able. One might say she's a bit of an icicle." J.M., "You know what the Greek philosophers say about icicles? Today's icicle may be tomorrow's hot water."
JM was really hoping that they get together...
I hate when they colorize old B&W
Awright Roxy.... next one is for you - a B&W teaser... but the story is there - let me know, what you think... Shall colorize, if I get more requests... Cheers.
ohhh... take it easy...this one was delightful, very subtle,
@@bewareofpigeons No, I didnt mean that, I wanted to have three versions of Roz's Sister Kenny.
@1:00:00-05 ‘STALKER’

perverted hollywood???
aww..... compared to today's movies....its nothing
A bunch of moaners here about the colourization.. It wasn't perfect, but under the circumstances perfectly acceptable...It didn't detract from the movie.
May I recommend Edmund Gwenn in "The trouble with Harry." England, December, 2024.
Interesting , some food for thought about post-war women
Indeed. "Get back in your place, women!" is the message here.
@ not exactly
As you said, it is indeed a study, or food for thought about post war women....
Feminism began some time n 1850, when three hundred men and women rallied to the cause of equality for women, but it was only in 1920, when the 19th amendment granted women the right to vote, a victory that took decades of agitation and protest. Funnily although women have been wearing pants before the Victorian era, it was not until the early 20th century, and a 1923 statement (not an official ruling) from the United States Attorney General declared that it was alright for women to wear pants in public. Despite all this women in the 1950s were not allowed to make contracts, could not buy or sell property, had little control of their earnings in most situations, and were discouraged from acting politically, such as hold office, even though they could vote. Women's rights were absurdly minimal.
Jeans first gained popularity among women in the 1950s, but it wasn't until the 1960s that pants - and denim specifically - became a true staple in women's wardrobes. And by the 1970s, trousers became quite fashionable for women. Besides, the second wave feminism movement took place in the 1960s and 1970s and focused on issues of equality and discrimination. Starting initially in the United States with American women, the feminist liberation movement soon spread to other Western countries.
Lastly, but not the least, the term sexism emerged from the “second-wave” feminism of the 1960s through '80s and was most likely modeled on the civil rights movement's term racism (prejudice or discrimination based on race). Sexism can be a belief that one sex is superior to or more valuable than another sex.
And now the problem now is that everyone (despite gender), is considered equal (salaries are same, privileges are same), and yet,
One side requires preferential treatment either being the fairer sex, or the men demand higher pay in areas of physical labor, or in sports.... I would like to see five set matches for both men and women, equal cash prizes, but this is something which seems practically impossible.
For me, personally, the wife is always right...and I sleep well at night, stress free.
Unusual to see RR with a blue face.
😂😂
The colourization is wonky. I haven’t seen one that is satisfactory. Oh well, keep trying.
lol jeff... well let me a bit honest here - Unless, I get a good B&W HD source file, I cannot proceed to the next step of colorization.... Besides, the quality of colorization is somewhat compromised due to the costs involved and the length of the movie... I can produce one great colorized movie per month, and the others are compromised due to the costs involved - Am trying to generate some revenue, that will help me offset the colorization costs.... Perhaps in due course... Thank you for bringing it up, nonetheless...
Let me tell you another fun aspect of colorization - in which ever channel you are watching the movie...Check the suit of the man/ woman in each frame - the colors change - a plain suit could become a pin striped one.... as that is how the algorithm is programmed...to take the best visual aspect, leaving out the movie entirely....
It just shows how little we observe - as most people overlook this as they watch the movie...
Enjoy, nonetheless (shouldn't have let you in on a trade secret...)
Have a great day,,,
@@colorizedflixThank you for posting this enjoyable movie. I am sorry that your economic considerations make it expedient to poorly colorize movies in order to post enough to make money, but I did notice the colors changing in the most jumpy fashion of any colorized movie I have seen. During the movie I was thinking that I would have preferred the original black and white version, as it would have been less distracting. I hope your finances improve so that you can colorize to higher standards.
@@AWBabbage You know old guy.... while that is true at the moment, most of the colorization apps out there gives emphasis to best virtual picture per frame...and which are connected according to the algorithm...
Am also sure in the coming years, these AI colorization apps will improve tremendously....
Oh incidentally, am an ardent black and white phographer.... My entire photojournalism degree was full of b&w pics, and that infatuation is still perpetrated deep below, even after I became a digital and a/v creator...
I have another channel "vintage flix", where I focus more on b&w flicks - Still in its developmental stages...
Oh, have you heard this one... An actress walks inside a bar in Hollywood....Madam, what will you have?
A botox poke and an ai touch....shaken not stirred..
Sorry, I couldn't help it..
Have a good day... and thanks for the comment...
It was ok until she lit a cigarette. Yuk.
The women who smoked in the United States in the 1940s according to race and ethnicity was;
- White women: 49% of women born between 1925 and 1944 smoked
- Black women: 51% of women born between 1935 and 1944 smoked
- Hispanic women: 29% of women born between 1940 and 1944 smoked
By 1950, more than one-third of young women in the United States smoked cigarettes. The number of women smoking increased rapidly in the 1950s due to aggressive marketing and advertising. By the end of the 1950s, smoking was the norm for some women....
By 2020, only 11.3% of adult women in the United States smoked cigarettes, which was down from 33.9% in 1965.
These were the 40ies
@@liselotterobinson5417 Yup.... In those days, most women were literally chimneys...
Oh dear, how annoying is that man? And how demeaning is that treatment of women? Feminism obviously began in the stalls of the cinema.
Oh, I am sorry, who may you be talking about....the professor???
Poor color...shifts and fades in and out
The bleeding colors remind me of a bad acid trip.
