Yeh, it's really difficult to find nicely fitted pair. Lasted shoe trees, of course, aren't always available.
I believe shoe trees are only important during drying out, so it's like from half an hour to a few hours. After that heir presence inside shoes makes not so much difference if any. So it's enough to have like 3 pairs of shoe trees regardless of the shoe wardrobe.

Yeah it’s very nuanced take on shoe trees. The drying process can take upwards of 12-24 hours, obviously it’ll vary depending on the climate, storage, humidity and user.
But I’d say even once they’ve dried, the shoes won’t maintain the shape on their own. Will the shoes fall apart without shoe trees? Certainly not. But this is easy to confirm, use a shoe tree in only one shoe for a months worth of wears, and then evaluate how the one shoe looks compared to the other.
I’m pretty sure you’ll notice a difference in the creasing, fit, the toe curl, or lack of curl.
Again, we’re not disposing whether or not the shoes will break apart without trees, but whether or not using trees provides substantial benefit over not using them.

Theoretically true but then there's the problem that not all shoes trees fit all of your shoes. So I have about 6 pairs of shoe trees and move them around as needed.

Get bigger shoes? Just kidding. Sandpaper, hand sander. Plenty of ways to do it. Just have to be willing to spend some time on it. I just adjusted a pair, took about 30 minutes.
