Casting a Yellow Brass Cube - Element Cube Collection

  • Next cube to be added to my element cube collection is Yellow brass, which is a common alloy consisting of 33% zinc and 67% copper. First the copper is brought up to its melting point around 1089°C, and then the zinc is added. As seen in the video; the copper is too hot which causes some of the zinc to burn away (the green flames and white smoke).
    The first attempt results in a cube with a big shrinkage hole in the side, which is improved in the second cast by having a large riser above the cube to provide more molten brass when the metal cools, shrinks and solidifies.

    Do you know why it generated flames when you put the zine in the molten copper?

      Yeah, that copper was simply too hot; making the zinc burn. The tricky thing is that copper melts at 1089°C and zinc start boiling at 907°C already..
