Your review of the Jinhao 159 had more detail than any of the other channels that I've seen. Your format in your reviews is very consistent from pen to pen, so I know that when I view them I will learn the information I'm curious about. I thank you for that.
I like the Jinhao 159 for every-day use and I have given them as gifts to people as introductory fountain pens. The converters are easy to fill, extra converters are very inexpensive, you can purchase pre-filled cartridges and I really like the weight and size (it fits my hand well and was a great size for my 9-year-old nephew as a first fountain pen). I recommend it as a "first pen" for some or as a daily "ol' reliable" pen for fountain pen users. It is budget priced but I do recommended it because it writes very well. I do wish I had a more fine point nib - but I still like them.
I've had three JinHao 159s. I gave one to my son. All three have written beautifully. I also like that they take a standard #6 nib. My biggest problem with it is the plastic cap threads on the metal body threads. All three 159s have cross threaded on me. My first one is not usable anymore because I can't recap it.
Thank you for your review.. I love mine.. I also have a 149 that I love.. different objectives as you point out. I do prefer the 159 over many of the Chinese offerings. I put a Goulet nib on mine and a Schmidt converter. A nice pen to use.. your reviews are very good! Frank from Boulder, Colorado, USA
Just bought one for my dad last week and now you post this, awesome! Only wished for a picture with the 159, x450 and x750 lined up next to each other.. Could you make a photo for us?
Good review. Arguably, the Montblanc isn't really a $1000 pen either, IMHO. I didn't realise the 159 is so large. As Jinhao adheres to international sizes, it's a simple matter to replace the nib with a flex Jovo for a premium experience (even vs a gold nib). I really like that ink.
Informative and thorough video. These are my favorite jinhao pens I had all colors but gave away the champagne gold and silver ( too gaudy ). I replaced all the jinhao nibs with Goulet fine and extra fine. Great workhorse pens. I also own a montblanc 149... Yeah not so much. Temperamental starts and skips although I have worked on the nib.the truth is it is more of a "status" pen and what you are really paying for is the snow cap on top of the finial.
If you want to try to fool someone with a fake Mont Blanc, try the Hero 1501. At least that one has a fake white thing on the cap. So maybe in the distance...
My biggest advice on chinese converters is to apply a little bit of grease on the piston and they will last much longer, of course they might break but its really easy to fix them with just a drop of attak, none of my fixed converters did break again! Again thx for the great video, this is one of my favourite pens, and I was really courious of your opinion about it!
I have three 159's which, out of the gate, wrote very smoothly. I gave the fourth one away as a gift. I cannot say that any, and I mean any x450 or x750 I've ever had wrote smoothly from the start. They took some work to make them writable.
I never really thought that Australian Sky Blue was that unusual a color, but it looks amazing in your video. Great shading from almost fluorescent cyan down to deeper azure! I'll have to check it out.
9:23 what I do when some pen dries out, to prevent splattering ink all over my notes, is taking the converter out, releasing the air, and inserting just the tip of the nib in the converter.
The 159 is a chunky pen like the x450 and x750 and is a heavy pen with hit-or-miss stiff pen nibs. You get what you pay for but a good first pen to help you appreciate an upgrade.
The Jinhao 159 is chunkier than the X450/X750. Own seven Jinhao 159s with Goulet nibs, and enjoy them. Having a smaller hand, I do not post the pen. Actually like my Jinhao X750s as well. I always feel that it is unfair to try to compare a $5 pen with a $1,000 pen with a gold nib. Apart from the chunky body, that is where the comparison ends. My Jinhao X450s have their original #6 nibs.
No one could compare a Jinhao 159 with a $1,000 Montblanc 149. Kind of like comparing a car that cost $150,000 with a $30,000 car; or funnier trying to compare a pair of Air Jordan III OG sneakers at $4,500, with sneakers you can buy at your local Walmart/Target/KMart at $59-$99. Thanks for showing pens it could compare with, for a more fair comparison.
I have a few of these that write pretty nicely. One I thought you might like to try is the Hero 901. I bought one expecting not much except a nice looking pen. But, I found that it is a good, reliable, smooth writer so I had to order a second 901. I can leave it for a few days, to a week and it write without issue. Thanks for the video.
Missing dot after ,,dog'' was very frustrating to watch. On the other hand, all yournclose-up writing is very satisfying to watch. So 50-50 for this drop-in.
I noticed that 159 starves of ink rather quickly. At the beginning it lays down saturated line, but it gets noticeably lighter the more i write. Especially if i didn't store it vertically prior to writing session. This never happened to my X450 with the same nib and feed. Even 1 euro Swan pen is smoother and more more consistent writer than 159. I wonder if i just got lucky with X450 and unlucky with 159 due to inconsistent quality control?
Well basically, its like trying to hit a jockpot in a shooting game but with a blindfold, so you have got unlucky with your 159, but mehh its a couple of dollars
Origami Chik3n: Have you given thought to tweaking your nib to eliminate the issue you were having????? Usually takes about 3-5 minutes to do so, and can make a difference. Also there can be an air bubble in the converter - so trying taking your convert apart and cleaning it; rescrewing it back together and see if that help. If not, it is easy to secure another converter. These are techniques that all fountain pen users have learned in working with their pens. Stephen Brown's TH-cam channel has videos on how to tweak a nib, clean a nib, and fix your converter.
I have to disagree that the pen won’t fool anyone, most people have no idea what they’re even looking at when they see a fountain pen. A classmate saw my pilot varsity and thought it was super fancy...
I have this idea in my mind of cutting that back bit up and adding a mechanism that grips the converter allowing you to twist it from the outside using the rear of the pen. I don't think i have the tools for the job though.
The 159, X450, and X750 are all #6 nibs. Depending on the assembly they might use the same nibs or some variants, but they're all basically interchangeable.
Your videos are very informative! I would Iike to suggest for a review regarding the Duckbill Gothic Parallel Calligraphy Fountain Pen. Can you please make a video about it. Thanks :)
Ok I've watched 4 of these vids and am fascinated . I've about 10 pens. Who is this presenter? Name age obviously from Aus but has the vocabulary of a fifty year old professional Update your personal history, how long have u been in the hobby how did your interest start?etc
Hey JPL - could you say "actually" a little less? I love your videos EXCEPT for the number of times you manage to fit in the word "actually" It's one of those annoyingly redundant words. I kind of think of the 159 as a bit of a phallic symbol. It doesn't feel like a pen that you'd use every day (there are more reliable pens such as the Wing Sung 3008 which will start EVERY TIME without having to mess around to get it to start) and its size kind of makes it feel like it's supposed to make a statement to whoever is seeing you use it. It's not an especially comfortable pen, isn't all that reliable (hard starts), and isn't well balanced (a little too back heavy especially when posted). It's a pen about looks.
As I'm a right handed index finger tip amputee, the Jinhao 159 is really comfortable to use, and my is more reliable than a Lamy Nexx I bought the same day. Go figure.
Hello everyone, hope you like this video. Should have part 2 of the 3D printed fountain pen series out next weekend :)
JPL looking forward to it!
What are you doing up so late, mate? :)
P.S. Nice to see another video from you again!
lisyaron honest answer, watching the formula 1 race
What paper do you use for your writing sample? It sounds as smooth as a whiteboard 😂
I spent half this episode appreciating that beautiful ink, glad you named it!

I'm a big fan of Chinese FPs. Got more 159's. Love the #6 nibs. Only thing that I dislike, is that the nibs aren't fine enough.
First modern fountain pen I bought. I’ll never get rid of it. Great job as always mate!!

I am in awe of this man's great looks! Wow!
Angelus Avila do u know his age location name how long in the hobby etc

I have been waiting for this pen review from you for a long time. Thanks a lot
I love this pen! I like its size and its weight and it writes well. I have collected six of them in different colors. Gorgeous pens according to me!
Ill have to look into getting on of those jowo nibs. I love the Jowo nib on my twsbi eco
One of my best writing pens is a 159 with a Jowo 1.1 stub nib and a larger Schmidt converter. About £20 all in.
Really nice review, I think I will buy it!
i have the black 159 and i replaced the nib with a Goulet #6 Broad from Goulet Pens and it is awesome. greating signing pen
The 159 is splendid; you should use it with the original JIN HAO ink cartridges (black)!!!
respect this workhorse !!!
Informative and thorough video.

do you prefer this over x450/x750? i wont mind a mega chonky pen myself. solid review man
I agree with your review ...great value for price....
If you want to try to fool someone with a fake Mont Blanc, try the Hero 1501. At least that one has a fake white thing on the cap. So maybe in the distance...
I have three!
2 in black, and one in silver with Goulet #6 Fine nib- it writes just beautifully
What are the other Chinese fountain pens that are as heavy as 159.
Never had a Jinhao converter fail on me over 4 years of heavy use.
I have three 159's which, out of the gate, wrote very smoothly. I gave the fourth one away as a gift. I cannot say that any, and I mean any x450 or x750 I've ever had wrote smoothly from the start. They took some work to make them writable.
Awesome review i never thought young people would like fountain pens. It's so cool
I ordered. It's about to reach me. I was relieved to learn that it was a good pen.
I love the Jinhao's x750, the weight and how they write.
any number 6 jinhao writes really well :)
My first fountain pen in Orange. I peeled the silver chrome off the cap to show the brass underneath. I also put a Jowo 1.1 nib on it.
How did you peel off the finish to reveal the metal ?
I never really thought that Australian Sky Blue was that unusual a color, but it looks amazing in your video. Great shading from almost fluorescent cyan down to deeper azure! I'll have to check it out.
cheers, it looks like a really nice saturated colour
9:23 what I do when some pen dries out, to prevent splattering ink all over my notes, is taking the converter out, releasing the air, and inserting just the tip of the nib in the converter.
What if Jinhao would make a 159 eyedropper Demonstrator fountain pen with a cursive italic nib? I would definitely buy a bunch of these.
The 159 is a chunky pen like the x450 and x750 and is a heavy pen with hit-or-miss stiff pen nibs. You get what you pay for but a good first pen to help you appreciate an upgrade.

I bought two a purple one and a black. The purple one actually writes really well the black one not as good. But for the price great value.
No one could compare a Jinhao 159 with a $1,000 Montblanc 149. Kind of like comparing a car that cost

Cheers Ill put that on my list to look at buying.
JPL plzz reply : what are the Chinese's fountain pens that can be used for urban sketching ( or can be used as technical pen) ???
Have you ever tried indian fountain pens? Would you plan on creating a review of one in the near future?
I don't see them on ebay AU but ill look out for them.
I have a Jinhao 163. It's super good. You should try it out.
How it compares to good pens ? Do you have other pens ? Sailor Platinum Pilot Pelikan ?
Would love to see a review of the Jinhao 156A. They have released new versions, and very few reviews of this pen so far. Same #5 nib as the 51A.
Missing dot after ,,dog'' was very frustrating to watch. On the other hand, all yournclose-up writing is very satisfying to watch. So 50-50 for this drop-in.

Well basically, its like trying to hit a jockpot in a shooting game but with a blindfold, so you have got unlucky with your 159, but mehh its a couple of dollars
Mine never starves for ink. It's a medium nib.
Origami Chik3n: Have you given thought to tweaking your nib to eliminate the issue you

I like f&ef nibs so the scratching doesnt bother me. I'll pick one up tomorrow. I'll prob buy an #6 EF for it tho
I have to disagree that the pen won’t fool anyone, most people have no idea what they’re even looking at when they see a fountain pen. A classmate saw my pilot varsity and thought it was super fancy...
Very cool. I bought this pen based on your video. I'm gonna put a Goulet nib in it and I think it will be great.
I love the large Jinhao
I just bought one in gold,....patiently waiting a month to receive it, heh heh.
i like these but two things I dislike:
1) The flow gets fainter down the page
2) Would be cool to have a piston/eye dropped version
I have this idea in my mind of cutting that back bit up and adding a mechanism that grips the converter allowing you to twist it from the outside using the rear of the pen. I don't think i have the tools for the job though.
now that is a DIY challenge
Exceptional review on Jinhao. I will buy one. Thank you?
So beautiful pen... I wonder what kind of ink in 9:22...is it Waterman Bleu Obsession?
It is Robert oster Australian sky blue
Very good vídeo. I will buy one for me. Best regards from Brazil.
Please do the Pilot non self filling pen
So the nib is just as same as jinhao x750?
Basically all the same.
The 159, X450, and X750 are all #6 nibs. Depending on the assembly they might use the same nibs or some variants, but they're all basically interchangeable.
I bought a lime green one that I inked with Noodler’s Baystate Blue. Thanks for the detailed review.
Your videos are very informative! I would Iike to suggest for a review regarding the Duckbill Gothic Parallel Calligraphy Fountain Pen. Can you please make a video about it. Thanks :)
Im not currently buying any pens but ill add this to my list of pens to look at
Lovely accent. Are you from Australia, or New Zealand?
Lily Raimey His eBay links are for Australia so probably from Australia
From his vowel usage I’d say Australia, or Straya!

Certainly top 10 from china

Think mont blanc 149 is kinda better.
That's the first pen I ever bought in bright Orange. I gave it to a friend who loves it.

Hey JPL. Allow me a heart Aussie!
Just call it 白山 and call it a day.
hiya
You're too late making this video, just order my jinhao x450 lol....
It's still good
Stop saying this pen so much.
