Wing Sung 3013 - $5 Vacumatic Fountain Pen

  • It took far too long but I finally got my hands on a vacumatic fountain pen and I was not disappointed. these have to be one of the coolest perks of owning a fountain pen. When I first though of getting a vacumatic fountain pen, I didn't expect it to be in the form of a $5 wing sung. Wing sung some how always manage to pull off amazing feats with their pens for the price, and the 3013 does not fail to deliver.

Hello, I used to come here about 4 years ago when I was in mid school, I couldn't find fountain pens in my city and I couldn't buy on the internet (because I didn't have a debit card) and I never liked asking my parents for things that weren't a necessity.
So while I didn't have one, watching all your videos was the best.
For years I have been collecting my empty disposable ballpoints, I will have about 200 in my collection. And when I moved to fountain pens I started doing it with my ink bottles. I'm currently in uni and just finished my fourth bottle, a parker quink, an inexpensive channel favorite (and test subject).
All this to say, thanks for all the videos and dedication, it is greatly appreciated. Watching the inactive channel I suppose you will be busy, but I hope everything is going well for you.
And well, if the question is allowed, I doubt you will keep the bottles, but I would like to know, how many inks have you finished?
    Have a nice day.

It’s made by Paili (Wing Sung 3000 series) and has two versions with Pilot and #5 nibs. Wing Sung 600 series is made by Shanghai Green Stationery. The Wing Sung brand was licensed by Shanghai Hero Industry (not Shanghai Hero Gold Pen Factory which makes some Hero pens) to different companies based on series numbers.

This is a plunger-filler - not a Vacumatic. "Vacumatic" refers pretty specifically to the pump system in the Parker Vacumatic (similar to Pilot CON-70). AFAIK, only Edison & PenBBS currently make Vacumatic filling pens.
This plunger system is sometimes called a "vacuum/vac filler", after the TWSBI vac700 model (though all self-fillers use a vacuum).
Thanks for the in-depth analysis of the pen though; I particularly like that you checked if the plunger works as ink shut-off valve.

Hey. Just for everyone to know: this is the updated version of the 3013. Differences are: cap and end piece aren't faceted anymore but smoothly round now. Therefore sometimes difficult to turn the end piece if your fingers are slippery. The metal band on the cap has two ridges and the "Wing Sung" is not written in Chinese anymore. The 3013 is engraved in better quality than before. The clip has a slightly different shape now and unfortunately it seems to be very very stiff and unusable (at least on mine). I have and older and newer. Visually the newer is better for me :)

Thanks for this review! Based on your review I bought a Paili 013 and Wing Sung 3013 off eBay. It took 3 months to get to me, but these are amazing pens. I swapped the nibs with Pilot Plumix nibs and love them more. The 3013 pen writes better with the Pilot nib and the 3013 nib writes better with the Pilot feed.
I agree that the weakness of the pen is QC of the feed. My feeds don't look like they weren't properly deburred before assembly. It was quite difficult to disassemble the nib and feed from the housing & section, but I think worth it. I deburred the feed before reassembly. I think the burrs were why it was difficult to disassemble the pen. I've never seen feeds quite in this state even my $2 Jinhao Sharks don't have any plastic burrs. Anyway, it's an easy fix. Thanks again for this review. Hope all is well.

I bought Paili 013. Which essentially is the same as Wing Sung 3013, except for branding. Mine had slightly smoked plunger handle and grip section. I like how it feels in the hand. It's well balanced, but also feels substantial, without being overweight. I like faceted cap and plunger handle.
Speaking of weather. I have almost exact same view from my window - a lot of rain. Except it's whiter and somewhat harder.

If you like this one you'll absolutely love the Penbbs 268 or 456. Another comment I'd like to make is that this type of pen is more commonly called a "vacuum fill" pen, while the term "vacumatic" is used to describe the type of filling system found on the Parker 51 Vacumatic, Wing Sung 601, etc.

I have several of these, and the ink capacity is amazing. (There's a way to get a much more full fill, with a little bit of time.) I carry one fairly regularly. My only issue with them is almost all of them that I have have gotten cracking around the top of the cap. Enough that one snapped right off at the clip. But, at the price, I can get a replacement. 😁
Same thing with the screw in the cap rusting. If you want, dab of clear nail polish takes care of it, and if you REALLY want, get a replacement screw in stainless steel.
I'm pretty happy with these. Are there a few things about them that I could get annoyed with? Yes, but for the price, pretty impressed with the pen. And much easier to clean out than some of my vintage pens. (1940s Eversharp Skyline, I'm looking at YOU 😁). I'd recommend them to someone else. Thanks for sharing this!

@@alexsandra9000 My issue is with the caps. I've had several that cracked right by the clip. I get some spatter from the nib inside the caps, but it may be because I try to get as full a fill that I don't have any leakage. System is fairly simple, just like filling an eyedropper one, but from a vacuum, really. TWSBI seals better, but it's still about a $25 difference in price. Doesn't seem to matter if you get a Wing Sung 3013 or Paili 013, in my experience, as I've had both crack in the same place. But, again, it's a $5 pen. Like some of the vintage pens in the lower price range, they aren't always the best, but they work. 😉

    @bikkies 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Not sure I'd call this a vacumatic. To me, that's more about the likes of some Parker 51s and Wing Sung 601s. I consider mine to just be vacuum fillers. Anyway, just a name. For the pen itself, I was very disappointed in my first 3013. It would constantly starve of ink, regardless of whether stored nib down or not, and regardless of whether I back off the end cap before writing. That's something that some say isn't necessary on this one, unlike the vac700r or the PenBBS 456. I since bought some Paili 013s which allegedly are the same as the 3013, but those are more reliable. Truth be told, I don't use any of my vacuum fillers often as I change inks too much and don't need such a large capacity day to day. That said, the filling mechanism is gloriously cool...

The only 2 problem I've ever had with this pen was sometimes I would get some burping that would lay big globs of ink down. The others was where the section and barrel would thread together I'd get some flex between the two and ink would leak through the threads.

I have five of these pens, both the Wing Sung and Paili versions. All of them have been inked up for over six months in a row. There are two issues that I have found. One is that almost all of them have gotten micro cracks in the top of the cap. I don't use the clip much, so it could pose a risk for those who do, but for me the issue was dried out nib on one of the pens with a larger crack. As there is no cap liner, a large enough crack in the cap will break the seal. The other issue is the feed on some of them. There are two types of platic used for the feeds, one is more transparent while the other is whiter. The whiter feed has been bad in all cases, it has flow issues and easily gets miscolored from the ink used. I had to swap nib and feed in those pens for them to work properly. You can get a 5 pack of these nibs really cheap, and some sellers will add a few feeds for free. I have had no issues with rust, either in the cap ring or the rod, despite being inked for months in a row. Or, I did have one pen rust, but that was because I mistakenly filled it with iron gall ink, so I can't blame the pen for that. All in all, it's very hard to beat this pen when it comes to value, and I do prefer it over the 3008.

I must be the unlucky one. I bought 2 of these 2 months ago - 1 purple and 1 clear. The clear one arrived with a crack in the threads between the barrel and the section - so I wouldn’t count on the robustness of this model. I get inked fingers every time I try using it.
The vacuum mechanism works well, but they both write like heavy steel nails. Not smooth and very inconsistent flow - skips and blobs everywhere.
I’m glad they were cheap because I am not a fan of the weight or the nibs I received.
I hope others have a better experience.

Cool, although the most practical way when it comes to fountain pens (also less plastic and eco-friendly) a syringe full of the ink you use and then injected into a cartridge or any threaded fountain pen body converted as an eyedropper (w/ trail and error with O-rings and silicone grease and perhaps a blue thread lock- but that may be best for metal threaded bodies), I love transparent with highlights of metal and that cool metallic pillar of the vacuum pen.
Is the nib #6? If yes, that's amazing, I can use my yet to be received Fountain Pen Revolution Ultra-Flex two tone nib which I will use with the Jinhao X750 (coz' that's the most affordable that's fits the FPR ebonite feed and Ultra-Flex nib).
I like heavy fountain pens, I like metal ones, not a fan of plastic and plastic like fountain pen materials like cellulose, unless, I guess it's a demonstrator (until they can make pens using Armor Glass or Gorilla Glass).

I’ve got a TWSBI 700R that I bought an optional loading bottle. Is this the same or similar. Have you released any new pens.

Not a good pen. Hard starter, clogs easily, must be stored nib down to get any ink flow.
