  • The Jinhao 159 is a big fountain pen with a small price tag. Manufactured in China by Jinhao, the 159 features a metal body with chrome hardware. With a body diameter of 16mm and a weight of 50g, the Jinhao 159 is a great fountain pen for those who like big, heavy pens, as well as beginning pen users -- mostly because of the price.

    I'm a middle school special education teacher and every time a get a new 159, my students ask to create a behavior contract to earn it. I've basically given away a bunch of these as well as a bunch of 450's and 750's. Now my students have more fountain pens than I do!
    Great video-Thanks!!! :)

    My first fountain pen (after an almost 40 year hiatus from them) was a 159, which I use all the time for letters and such. (Not an easy pen to carry in a shirt pocket.) Wet, smooth, and at the price?
    Plus I have had a stroke, and it's "primary crayon in the hands of a very small toddler" vibe is exactly what I need. Lets me still have decent handwriting (I'd polished my handwriting years ago on lever fill pens, so this was easy to drop back in the routine. Plus it doesn't give me the hand strain and cramps I get from thin "b-word" (first part of the word is "ball" 😁) pens. And the weight and size help me not to drop it.

      +Matthew White 2 or 3 years ago I bought a Jinhao 250. Within the past 3 months I bought 3 Jinhao x450s and 1 x750. The 450s wrote perfectly right out of the package, as did the 750. The 250 is a little less perfect, but still a good writer. I've paid a max of $3.50 each for all of them. How can you go wrong?

      +David J yep, I was very suprised at the broad nibs my " M" nibbed 159 displayed... i like broad nibs so I am not complaining... I also have some nice writing Deltas... I am not saying they are the same, just the best value ever

    I really don't see these pens deterring anyone from getting the higher end pens. Jinhao really makes it great for a new person to play and eventually evolve up to getting the much nicer pens, once it makes sense to do so. Gotta love Jinhao for opening the doors to the fun of fountain pens and ink and nibs.. get people hooked and addicted. lol

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I agree completely. The more affordable an entry-level fountain pen is, the easier it is for people to get into the hobby. From there, it's only a matter of time until they upgrade, maybe even to Montblanc levels. - Colin

      I guess its only problematic for high end user that suddenly discover about Jinhao and stick on it for awhile.

      I am a pen enthusiast, and I had many good quality, european pens. But to be honest,a cheap Jinhao is writing in the best quality for me, better than 4 Lamy Safaris that scrached, and better than Rotring, etc. So I'm not sure, I wish to pretend that its only for "new persons" just because it's cheaper. that would be snobbish a little bit. A youtuber demonstrated that a stupid shark looking jinhao has more pleasant flow than his limited edition, 1000$ fountain pen. But its rare that someone would admit that, after such spending :)

    I recently bought this pen, and am surprised by it in so many ways. Very heavy, enough for me to not even consider taking it out with me. I find also that it forces me to write in a larger than normal hand, as it feels awkward trying to write at my usual size. For obvious reasons I don't wish to write with it posted. But it is quite smooth, and the ink flow is just right for me. I'll be using it occasionally, when I need to write big. Amazing for the price though.

    "Fake it till you make it" ...LOL
    I have 5 of these pens, but they are sold under the Bulow Writing Instruments label.
    Considering what they are, they don't write too badly at all. And if you want to exercise your biceps and your triceps and your finger and hand and forearm muscles, you certainly don't need a dumbbell with which to do it. There is a definite sweet spot on the nib.
    Happy Easter to you, Brian
    Kind regards.

    I bought a red Jinhao 159, so I guess the color offering has increased. The medium nib is surprisingly smooth and quite wet. It's a no-brainer for the price. The clip, nice and flexible, would be a bit more "Montblanc-like" if it weren't for the emblem thingy.

    However. ....I've had two of of these great pens but after refilling it a few times using the converter it begins to get loose to the point that eventually it just would not hold the converter in place. It seems that the converter's opening is too big for that pen so jinhao compensates by adding a plastic fitting which breaks after you plug it in a few times. After that happens....pen is useless not even a cartridge would hold in place. love the pen..hate the filling mechanism

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +eli Friedman depending on the ink and paper used, the line could look wider than what I wrote. The paper especially can make a big difference, if it's more absorbent it soaks up more of the ink and makes it look really broad. I'd almost be willing to bet that's what's going on here. But if it seems like something's really wrong with it shoot an email to my team at info@gouletpens.com and they'll help you troubleshoot your specific nib. -Brian Goulet

      The 159 is bigger in terms of length & diameter. That extra material (metal) contributes to the higher price with the 159. Both seem very similar in terms of build quality though. - Colin

    I have a jinhao fountain pen that came with cartridges , I know I can use an ink well, can I just put the cartridge in it to write with? How do I get the ink to start flowing to the nib?

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +karen williams Yes, a standard international cartridge will fit and you can start using it right away. You may need to write on paper for a little bit in order to get the ink flowing through the feed. That's totally normal! -Margaret

    can I remove the converter and fill the ink completely in the case and use the pen? is this possible? will it not cause any leaks?

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would not recommend that. There are metal components in the body of the pen that might react to different inks & cause leaking or flow issues. - Colin

      You need to flush out a new jinhao 159 first before inking it, as sometimes oil gets left under the nib and in the feed from manufacturing. Lukewarm water with a tiny drop of dish soap and a final flush with cold water will clear it out. If you have a baby nasal bulb that will make it quick and easy to pull water through. Push it into the feed section and stick it the water or cleaning solution, then squeeze and pause. Wipe dry, then ink it. My Jinhao 159 started fine after that. This is a good idea to do with any new fountain pen anyhow.

    Heya, I have started doing calligraphy, I got a practice pen with this gorgeous medium, chisled nib. I believe it is manuscript, It has been perfect for at least practicing. I have bought a few fountain pens, but none of them are good for gothic script because the end is not flat. I am not well aquainted with terminology used among the fountain-pen users, and I don't know what I should be looking for. I don't have an insane price range, but it would be nice to get a more durable pen with the same kind of nib. Please help if possible, thank you.

      SteamShinobi Hey there! I would recommend the Pilot Parallel pens. They have varying italic nibs, so you can pick which size is the best for you. And they are $10 each or come in a set of 4. Let me know what you think! www.gouletpens.com/package-parallel4/p/Package-Parallel4 -Margaret

    Hi Brian, first I have to declare that I am a straight, I only love opposite sex. Now I am going to tell you that you look much much more handsome now (2015-2016 videos) than how you look in 2013 videos. What did you do? Did you exercise and lost weight or something? Was that because of your hair? Tell us your trick. (hmmm... and I think maybe I can get some discount code for saying all these......LOL)
