I'm glad someone finally made a video about the casual side of Smash Bros. As a casual Smash player, Melee was my first entry into the series and I'm very surprised we share similar views on Melee as a whole. The funniest part gotta be us in the training room spamming Pokeballs. I would spend more time doing that and listening to the soundtrack while collecting trophies than playing matches against CPUs especially after unlocking all the characters and stages.
AWESOME VIDEO, loved hearing what you had to say. Also interesting note on the cyber theme, I've never heard anyone talk about that. I'm also just amazed by how much you talked about in the span of just 10 minutes. Never felt like you were rushing and dragging, great pacing and awesome transitions from topic to topic. I will sub!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, what a trip down memory lane. Not only do I love Melee for it’s great modes and collectibles and all that, but it also manages to teleport any player right back to their childhood with it’s memorable esthetic and atmosphere. It was created in this weird purgatory period between the 64 and GameCube, so in a weird way it feels like an N64 game with GameCube graphics. Most of the stages reference N64 games, and, as you said, the character design is still in this strange state, too. That in combination with the aforementioned tech aesthetic and in general very late 90’s feeling it gives off, right down to the characters spawning in like holograms, makes Melee feel like a time capsule to the era it was made. I adore Ultimate, it’s basically my dream video game, but Melee is what I consider to be the first true Smash game. If we’re being honest, 64 was the tech demo for Melee. It’s an incredible game I still turn on from time to time and enjoy, and it never fails to delight. GREAT video!
Sometimes I wish that I was born in the 1990's to experience Nintendo in the 2000's. No fancy phones, no microtransactions, no half ass games just the old charming classics.
melee is just perfect in so many ways. so nostalgic, amazing game play, combines so many characters, music, like what doesnt it have? its love by both the casual and comp scene for many and all reasons
I’m so happy to see someone acknowledge the non-competitive and single player side of Melee. To me, this is what made Melee as fun and amazing as it is and what I always think about when I think of Melee. The ridiculous number of hours I put into it just playing the single player modes and playing VS mode free for all with items on as well as spending hours collecting trophies and looking at them in the gallery will always be my preferred way to play Melee. It’s really sad that most people only see Melee as a competitive fighting game now, especially since that was never the point of Smash Bros. in the first place.
Melee is such a refined game on so many levels. The competitive scene is fantastic, but so are the casual and single player elements - they're what drew so many of us to the game in the first place
The problem with casual melee is that it just doesn’t make very much sense. Why would you play melee over ultimate, a game with arguably more content, stages, fighters, more refined mechanics, and less deep gameplay? What’s compelling about melee is its fast pace and exploitation. Because the game was developed in such a short time, some techniques like wavedashing, a physics exploit where jumping and airdodging into the ground converts your airdodge speed into ground speed, we’re discovered, and like anything that has ever been played competitive, have been used by top players to get a competitive edge on their opponents. By nature, melee is a competitive game. Although these techniques put melee more in line with traditional competitive fighting games, it’s unique and keeps its current players rather than sending them off to the most recent smash game.
Meh, I like how unlocking stages and characters in melee actually feels fun, and in ultimate unlocking characters is just this arbitrary nonsense, also world of light is so lame, adventure, classic mode and events in melee are way more fun, plus I'll take a handful of trophies over bs spirits any day
The movement feel of Melee isn't something you inherently have to be competitive to appreciate. I'm an items-on, wacky stages guy most of the time and I cannot wavedash for the life of me (in Melee at least, I can perform it just fine in more streamlined games like Fraymakers and Nick), but I can still recognize a sludgy game when I play it, and I'll happy drop a good 70 fighters and stages for something that feels more fun to run around and perform attacks in.
If you want to play single player in melee, it's viable and fun. And its casual multiplayer is more approachable because of the lack of content (fewer matchups, items, and stages to learn). The lack of a buffer system is... retro to say the least? But at least the game gives you fun single player settings to get used to it. I just feel like ultimate flattens out the skill curve and swaps it for a much steeper knowledge and matchup curve. And when the only thing to do is play against other people, it inherently feels more competitive
It’s a fun game nonetheless. I like Ultimate and Melee for different reasons and I’m far from a competitive player. I played Melee as a kid and it’s nice to go back to. Unlocking characters and stages is fun, the challenge modes are a blast. Ultimate is my go to for playing with friends but when I get my GameCube out with folks it’s Melee and Double Dash time.

It's so refreshing to hear about smash from a casual perspective

Ultimate also supports 8 players
