if you need to remove corrosion in future a more gentle method is to use clear spirit vinegar that's been boiled and then just immerse the terminals for about 5 minutes in the still lukewarm vinegar, all the corrosion will fizz away and then you can restore the shine of the terminals with either just alcohol or a little brasso wadding but only if the corrosion has eaten entirely through the coating on the terminals to reveal the copper core. Obviously you'll want to clean any remaining vinegar off and dry it all but alcohol will help you again with that. This same method is really useful at cleaning corrosion out of switches too.
That battery leakage is nasty. I got a Gameboy Color here where the battery acid has actually eaten away parts of the mainboard, instead of Nintendo only the letters "Nint" are left. It went up to the pin strip connector (there is still some residue left I can't get out). Basically a huge chunk of the mainboard is gone, only the copper core is left. The GBC only turns on whenever it feels like it, and even if it does, you can't move left, because that button doesn't work anymore. The screen is still good, the speaker works, the case is in relatively good condition (clear purple one), so it's good for spare parts.
GameBoy's are super cheap and super easy to fix, great system to start on. believe it or not, i got my first one for just 1€ :D good job, but i'd rather use Vinegar to clean the battery terminals, just scrub it for a while and it will remove 90% of the corrosion and acid residue, even in tight places.
I found it way easier to pry stuff like laptops with a plastic card. Though it has to be one that is cast plastic and not composite film-cardboard-film kind of card. Because that film will peal off from mechanical impact and friction.
Good job! You can btw get the battery terminals out by bending a metal tab from inside the chassis, this way you can properly get rid of the battery leakage from both the chassis and the terminals. You'll want to do this because the corrosion is "alive" and still attacking the metal, so get rid of it as much as you can.
Hi Retro repairs I was wondering if it is possible to fix my on/off switch because i cant turn on my on/off switch to make the gameboy color turn on instead i have to put the AA batteries in, and it will power on. This method of turning on the GBC is getting repetitive it does not even matter if the on/off switch is turned on or not, if I put the batteries in it will automatically turn on. This is because while changing my GBC housing, the thing needed to opperate the on/off switch just plopped right out the system and since i was changing the housing on the housing on the rug, I could not find it. So do you have any suggestions on how to replace my on/off switch for my gbc?
Yeah on the power switch shoot rubbing alcohol in the switch and then let it dry because if you break the switch portion you will have to buy a new motherboard
No, that's much too coarse, you'll damage the contacts. I use sandpaper as a last resort, and automotive sandpaper used to sand down imperfections in paint. Usually 2500 grit.
OMG DUDE THANKS THIS IS THE VIDEO I WAS LOOKING FOR. CAUSE MY GAMEBOY ADVANCE IT TURNS ON AND THEN OFF LIKE THAT GBC. AND MY GBA HAD BATTERY CAROUSING IN IT. U MADE MY DAY. I SUBSCRIBED AND LIKE UR VIDEO. THANKS FOR THE HELP DUDE.
I use a 60/40 solder with a rosin flux core. Don't recall off hand what brand solder I have right now, I got it at a local electronics parts and vacuum store.
Interesting, but this would be at least 10x better with improved camera work (or just proper focus and exposure). Not being able to even see what you are working on is pretty dull.
@furyfox13 no not yet i dont have a car to get to the post office i should have it sent soon my ride is working 6 am to 7 pm i have to wait for him to have a day off i will try to send it before February i will send it as soon as i can
All of these videos I'm watching is making me want to start up retro restoring as a hobby.

Sparks N Zeros or just use alcohol
How do i put terminals in warm vinegar if they're soldered into the motherboard or they're in the plastic back and I can't get out em?
@@mattiavalgio2988 😂😂😂
@@mattiavalgio2988 desolder them
Cool video. I personally never liked the translucent models but still great to see people taking the time to repair instead of replacing

Or you could use some wire and fix it

What about 90% isopropyl alcohol?
90 will do if you can't get ahold of 99

For those switch repairs get yourself a spray can of Deoxit. The stuff is an amazing contact cleaner. May save you some desolder-ing in the future!
atariforever2002 Or 70% vinegar. It does the trick.

Thanks. I was going to resort to boiling it off as well, figuring the corrosion (likely battery leakage) had stuck the terminal on to the plastic.
How the hell did you find game boy colors for 6 bucks each?! Wtf?! Happy for you
Use baking powder and water to neutralize and remove the battery acid.
Thats really good, you can get gameboys for cheap and repair them then sell them for profit!
Or you can not be a piece of shit selfish human and sell them for just a dollar more or the same price as you bought it.
Yeah on the back housing shell take the one piece terminals out and soak it in vinegar like that other guy said

Did you check the emi-10 filter after the F1 fuse
Use household ammonia (a base) to counteract the battery acid. Then rinse with alcohol.
Daniel Miller I’m guessing Windex or any other ammonia base window cleaner would do the trick?
Question are you Canadian I noticed you say out like oat just wondering
Ha, is it that obvious?
white vinegar works the best for battery corrosion!
Would any sandpaper work like sandpaper for wood
No, that's much too coarse, you'll damage the contacts. I use sandpaper as a last resort, and automotive sandpaper used to sand down imperfections in paint. Usually 2500 grit.
@RetroRepairs I have an xbox360 i found in house I was tearing down, if you want it to make a video on let me know, no idea if it works or not
Yeah, I’m always interested in stuff like that, however I’m not sure how much shipping something that big and heavy would cost.
New subscriber here! I agree on the vinegar suggestion to remove corrosion.
That non-Kona bark sounds like a punter.

What kind of soldering roll do you use for soldering things like this?
I use a 60/40 solder with a rosin flux core. Don't recall off hand what brand solder I have right now, I got it at a local electronics parts and vacuum store.
Then what cou lb d I use instead of sandpaper
Try a pencil eraser

xeostube
You obviously havent watched much of AvE.
Baking soda will clean the corrosion too I believe :)
Ahhhhhh!!!! Why are you using sand paper?!?! Use alcohol for the switch and vinegar for the contacts.
8:28 reflection face reveal
Do you fix these things for fun or is there some sort of profit margin?
ive got a original xbox you can have if interested let me know and ill mail it to you.......
Hey, that would be awesome. Don't have an xbox video yet, might repair as necessary and/or mod it. Email me at retrorepairsca@gmail.com
