Diagnosing and Repairing a Non-Booting Gameboy Color

  • This was a nice little repair, very clean board, simple fix with some educational steps along the way.
    A via repair was optional but for the simplicity of repairing using a length of wire along with the cleanliness of this method made it more suitable.
    Repairing a non booting Gameboy Color can involve many other solutions but in this instance, it was a simple via not being in good condition.

    Thank you for this video. I've been dying to learn how to follow the power traces. There are tons of videos out there for replacing parts and stuff but not many that focus on diagnosing. I would love to see more of this. Especially for consoles that don't get as much love like the gameboy light.

      since I was a kid I wanted to own 1 kind of each gameboy that came out since the beginning. The gameboy light is the only one missing now :) (almost , cause I didnt want to start looking ath regional gameboys they made for Korean market though...) I'd love to get a Virtual Boy but now its so $$$$

    This is the best diagnosis video I found. Others just jump straight to guess replacing the switch or the fuse.

      Mine wasnt working too After i installed a new (oled) Display. The Video helped me a lot, i figured out my f1 was faulty. I desoldered my f2 and put it in f1 for the Moment. I dont use the power Jack, but i think the Sound Noise is a Bit louder than before. So i will replace Both later.

    Funny story, I bought a nonfunctional GBC but I thought it didn’t arrive, so I ordered another one which did. Unfortunately, the only that didn’t arrive actually did and was in an HP Instant Ink box, so I had no idea until recently! Definitely going to try and fix the original one I ordered up, thanks for the tips man! 😁

      Looks like they started making a clone for GBC. Last i checked only GB and GBA were being sold. Looks like a really botched up clone though and the pins look a little short for bending into the correct position. Thanks for the info ill look into it again

    • @SoundToxin

      I got a dead GBC and was trying to follow this method. I had a dirty switch that I cleaned and my F1 fuse is good, I get continuity from the positive battery terminal to the switch. It doesn't power on. I cleaned the whole PCB and the battery terminals. Could it be a bad capacitor or something? How would I check for that?

    • @SoundToxin
      @SoundToxin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, I just had to clean it a bit more thoroughly and it's working now. I had already done an initial scrubdown with IPA and a toothbrush, but I must've missed some spots or not scrubbed enough in some spots, because I was cleaning more later out of boredom and when I went to test it, it unexpectedly powered on.

  • @ItalianRetroGuy

    To avoid pinches I suggest routing the wire through any nearby clean vias and make it go top-bottom-top-bottom clearing obstacles as you go. Though you're going to need enameled wire for that.
    My recommendation when using jumper enameled wire is to use the biggest gauge you can go with, but if you're gonna do this thing I'd say going one size down from that is best. That way you don't end up scraping the wire hard against the inside of the via and end up damaging the coating.

    I've tested everything you mentioned in this video and was able to get a beep at every point (though sometimes took a bit of adjusting the probes on my cheap multimeter)

All you should do really is take off the metal covering and then clean it with isopropyl or some other good cleaner that won't destroy the motherboard. Then after you're done cleaning it. Solder the metal covering back on
