Baptista's performance here is on so many levels that is spot on i don't think a lot of people notice. Captain right off the bat has to look at his shirt to verify what this Marines name is... AND STILL gets it wrong, baptista now knows this incompetent leader doesn't even recognize that he existed until right now. So as a "Fuck you" and playing smart not to gripe what he really wants to say, (possibly be reprimanded later in "random" duty he would most likely pull for telling the captain how it is) he starts speaking a gibberish mix of Portuguese and English knowing even if he voiced any concern regarding his duty it wouldn't matter as the captain not only didn't get his name right, but will most likely forget everything about him the moment he walks away. (Except for any insults the captain may have taken if truth was voiced) And the fact he ends it with a smile and higher pitched tone of voice making it seem like he's content the Captain replies "Yes!" With a smile.... Perfect acting and displaying how disconnected brass can (and is in real life) be from the men that serve under them, even in combat zones.

We had Staff Sergeant Hannah as our platoon sergeant when I was over in Iraq. Our original platoon sergeant was wounded and sent back to the States. Staff Sergeant Hannah was a man with no filter. Brutally honest, aggressive, but also compassionate about his soldiers. If there was any sort of trouble between him and another soldier, he would take off his top and say, "I'm not Staff Sergeant Hannah right now. I'm just Joe. Tell me what the problem is."
If someone was harassing one of his soldiers, Hannah would confront the aggressor. If a soldier was failing PT because he just wasn't fit enough, he would engage with a change in the soldier's PT regime with a focus on what he was failing at. If a soldier became ill with diarrhea and was embarrassed about it, Hannah would consul the soldier. If you were honest with him, did your job, asked questions, and showed improvement-Staff Sergeant Hannah would bend over backwards to help and protect you. As a real leader should. He was a man that didn't start out in his position. It was thrust upon him, but he was the best man for the job.

One thing that 25 years in the USN and a career in private industry both as an employee and a business owner is never to underestimate the power of incentives. Everyone responds primarily to incentives. The absolute crap your CO or boss is doing, that makes zero sense to you and seems downright dimwitted, is them responding to an incentive you don't know about. It might be a good incentive like protecting you from something, and just as often it's a bad incentive like whoring for a medal or cutting 0.02% off the cost of production before the next shareholder meeting. Whatever shitty decision they make, there's a logic in it somewhere, and to reverse the old saying, never assume incompetence when malevolence will explain something. Being a retired officer and catching up in the PX with retired officers I served under and hated, it's amazing how many fuckups they won't just remember, but boast about. I think the point of the saying is because most people assume malice nearly all the time - when in reality people are just not that great at things generally, or downright incompetent. It ties into the other behavioral phenomena of 'Imposter Syndrome', 'White Coat Syndrome' and other things relating to assuming other people 'must' be competent therefore unfortunate circumstances must be malicious in nature.

If your corpsman/medic/troops say that you're incompetent, and the next thing out of your mouth isn't "What can I do to fix that?" Then not only did you just prove them right but imo, not only do NOT deserve your commanding position, but you do NOT deserve a place in the military. Accountability shouldn't be applied only towards the lower enlisted, either we're ALL held accountable, or we're NOT held accountable.

As a manager, there's no way this can be true all the time. I've had employees I've corrected dozens of times for the same exact (EASY TO FIX) issues and they STILL will not do it. Some people just will not / cannot learn or have zero willingness to do anything for the benefit of anyone. Issues as simple as, "At the end of the day, write our sales total in this spreadsheet". And they still cannot write a single number, in a speadsheet.. on a computer.. at the end of the day. More often than not, the Manager is really the person who cleans up everything that incompetent employees cannot - or will not do - despite those employees being spoon fed for weeks / months on end. A good manager can and should be able to run the entire operation by themselves. How else do they know how to manage the other positions?

Recon worked primarily in 4 to 8 man teams of enlisted guys, moving on foot, doing their job without any radio contact for long periods of time. These officers were only in charge of where they went and why they went. The how was all up to them. So having these officers give them these micromanaging orders instead of the team leaders like Colbert, Reyes, and Cuckler was new to them.

No matter what kind of a fuck up the Captain was - the First Sargent should have been keeping him on the straight and narrow. The First Sargent this Captain had - was a piece of shit.
This Captain never should have had to go to his Marines like this - the First Sargent should have been able to tell him what he was doing right and what he was doing wrong. THAT is his job.
It's like this - the Captain had been in the Marine Corps maybe 4-6 years. The Company First Sargent has been in the Marine Corps - 16-20 years. The First Sargent is suppose to know how to do ALL these things the Captain is doing. He is supposed to KNOW not only how to do it - but how to keep the Captain from fucking it up.
That was the real tragedy here. The Captain may not have been so bad if he'd had a decent First Sargent teaching him how to command a Company and giving him good advice - instead of kissing his ass and taking advantage of this position for his own good.

    • @jwrosenbury
      @jwrosenbury 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's why the system works.
Left to their own devices, some men will want the smartest officer. Some will want the most competent officer. But an officer competent in one situation (like in garrison) will not be competent in another (like battle). Some will want the laziest who allows them to get away with crap. Objectives will not be achieved.
Incompetent officers are the norm. This is because battle is rare and judging officers outside of combat for combat can't be done. It is one reason why seasoned troops are so much better than green troops. The leadership has had a chance to weed out at least some of the weak leaders. (If they don't, they lose and it's not a problem anymore. They are dead.)
So distance is put between the men and their leaders. That way a general can replace bad officers without destroying unit cohesion. Also, good officers aren't always well liked officer. A general's criteria is different from a grunt's. Voting doesn't work.
In this case (I read the book, not the movie), the officers did a great job, even if seen as incompetent. The unit was motivated enough to fight and maneuver far above expectations. Command and control worked well. Logistics, personnel, plans -- everything worked. (The lack of food was an issue. But compare to the sister unit, which did nothing.) As a citizen, I rate them as above average though some were obviously better than others.

NGL the best Platoon Commander I ever had was an Naval Academy grad. Gained all of our respect not just in the platoon, but in the company within a few months. Probably the fastest I’ve seen a 2LT gain any modicum of respect outside of his shinies. Fucker was a straight up tactical genius and took care of us. However, he understood the military wasn’t for him and left after his obligation. Shame as I could him being the future Commandant of the Marine Corps.

There is no such thing as 'speak freely' when you're addressing a superior in war time. I have no fucking idea if this really happened or if it's just artistic license but I know I would not have a conversation with witnesses where I call the man incompetent to his face. Especially not while in an active combat zone. There's plenty of ways to take care of an incompetent CO without risking his wrath for little more than a bitching session. I'm guessing that anyone who's served could name at least a few instances where leadership has ass raped good men for small minded petty feuds. And let me tell you, calling your commander incompetent is not a small thing.

Baptista is brazilian, at least they could get a damn Brazilian actor for the role, i didn't understand anything without subtitles . Brazil has the second largest latino population in the USA after Mexico dear producers.

The fundamental point here is that it isn't his fault. Nobody can predict who will be competent in wartime and who will not. George Marshall knew this. In WW2, in general, field commanders who were incompetent were relieved and sent somewhere where they could help the war effort. Nobody considered this an ill reflection on them. Nobody knows who will be able to do the job until the shooting starts. The real issue is when one has incompetence and one does not relieve the commander. Then good soldiers die for no good reason.

Your corpsmen is the best indicator on how your officers are, afterall. Its your corpsman who has to put your ass back together if your officer does stupid things.

I feel like this is a perfect example of things people think are good leadership but sign of a terrible leader. If you have to coax and cajole feedback from your team, or masking looking for feedback as a means to get affirmation, youre a bad leader. Military, business, school, whatever, if you want to lead, you have to foster an environment where you get these things without paying lipservice to them. Good leaders are good listeners, and if you listen, there is plenty that your team is telling you about what they think about your leadership.

That was wonderfully well said. You just explained one of the ways *why* my current boss is abysmal in a thorough way that let me notice the details for the first time.

@@SamBrickell Its not easy being a good leader. It takes time and the trust in yourself that you will learn from your mistakes, and more importantly you have to let yourself make mistakes. And finally, you have to have faith in others when they inevitably make mistakes. Many people lack the empathy and the self reflection to be able to pull that off
