Robin I don't call it free camping for many reasons. First we pay our State and Federal taxes. We should pay the price by picking up trash, raking up around the campsite, improving the fire rings etc. I have seen you do things like this in your videos. If we all live by the rule of leaving our camp better than when we first got there our experience will be that much better!
Great info! Also to add to the list, my number one resource for finding dispersed camping areas in National Forests, is their MOTOR VEHICLE USE MAPS, MVUM. Hard copies are free at the Ranger stations, also can be downloaded for free from the USFS website. I just search whatever forest I’m going to then MVUM. For example “Siuslaw National Forest MVUM.” They take some getting used to but show EVERY road in the forest and even dotted lines on the roads with established campsites though sites are not limited to the dotted line roads. Especially helpful when you don’t have cell service for map apps- never get lost! Each Forests rules and policies can also be found there. Then I scan the roads on google maps or google earth to hone in on a particular area. With the exception of heavily wooded areas you can often see the campsites on satellite view! This is how I find the gems.
And like someone else said, these are paid for by our tax dollars so no, it’s not freeloading, we paid for them! Happy boondocking!

We are staying in a wonderful State of New York forest outside Watkins Glen in the beautiful finger lakes region for FREE! Don’t let anyone tell you there are no free places to stay in the east....not true😍

When I saw the map Robin displayed, I got really disappointed since it looked like so little public land in the east. I am in New York City and have done lots of day hikes around here. Looking to do a lot of weekend trips this year.

I believe the reason that almost all the "public Land" is in the west is because by the time the Government even thought to set aside land for public use the East was already occupied.
If you get off the interstates you can find some very cheep places to stay in small town city parks.
I have also rented spots for extended stays in rural areas (in the county) for as little as $200 a month (including hookups). If you LOOK, you will find free or very cheep places to park your RV.

Robin, I currently live in South Dakota. Originally I am from "The South". It was very easy to find the places I am talking about if you are comfortable just walking into a small store (or a restaurant where the old times drink coffee) and introduce yourself and just ask. The places I am talking about "in the county" will be known by the locals.
I have no problem just approaching people I don't know and striking up a conversation, I realize that is hard for some folks; but really, in most places you are welcome (you will get "the vibe" if you are not).
I have also just drove past places with RV's parked and stopped and knocked on a door and got the person's name that owned it (usually a "review" also).
If you are friendly, the VAST majority of times; people will be friendly back!
Okay first of all just the beginning of this has me giggling. Second of all and this is as far in as I am, I'm going to start calling it dispersed camping because I prefer to look like Ann Margaret! always have always will 😄😄😄👍 Viva Las Vegas, baby🎶🎵🎼

SJR, I am struggling to find a decent place in NC, or VA. Not sure where you are. Any luck..? Haven't had much luck with NC. May try VA. Really want to be closer to a town, and have a cell signal, as I have health issues.

Teddy Roosevelt's home on Sagamore hill is right here on Long Island NY where I live. Definately worth a visit if you ever find yourself in the area.

Google Maps with street view is the best way to find city 'boondocking'. Find industrial areas for instance that don't have residential streets.

I could stay at campgrounds if I had too but I would rather not be around 1000's of ppl right next to each other. That's one of the things I'm trying to get away from for some peace and serenity 😄
I live on a group of an islands surrounding and part of a major large lake and river system.
So as you can imagine....our little neighborhoods were built back in the 40's, most upgraded by the 70's but the lots remained the same so each house that once was a sm cabin for vacationing are now permanent residences. Most 6' apart lol!!! So as you can see....I'm really not wanting to camp anywhere with a lot of people 😉 Thank you again for giving us well researched, honest and useful information 😊

You give me the courage to stealth camp and boondock. However, I have an FX, and cannot fold down the Murphy bed. But, I have two couches that I can sleep on, instead. Happy Travels!
Robin have you ever heard of Harvest Host? For a small yearly fee they wineries and farms let you boondock on their property for free! Also theirs boondockers welcome that does the same! That would help people out in the Midwest and the east where there isn’t public land!

Because my workload is dwindling (I’m a self employed pet sitter) & am struggling to keep a roof over my head & provide for my own fur kids , there’s a strong possibility that I may be having to give up my apt to live full time in an RV.
I would have to finance it, so that would be my only “rent” payment.
I’d need to tow my car to use for work (a tiny, Scion iQ).
So I’m hoping to be able to buy the rig & move into that after giving up my apt which I can’t afford.
I understand what your saying in this video about being able to “boondock for free” in those designated BLM areas of our country..
But my question or comment is you would have to go to a campground where you’d pay to have hookups so you can get your water tank filled, dump your tanks & get electricity to run your AC if it’s hot out right??Since you’d need most of those, & their not free, how many days of the month do you think you can boondock & how many days would you need to pay for hookups?
Every 3-5 days or so depending on the weather?
I have no idea, RV living is something I know very little about, but I’m trying to learn as much as I can because like I mentioned earlier in my post, I’m most likely going to end up living in one.

Thanks for the origins of the word Boondocking, & along the way - what we call here - living out in the boonies. I never even questioned it, or imagined it had origins. Don't want to brag, but I live in a state which actually has a town named Podunk.
As a child, I'd found myself occasionally using the derogatory slam - East Podunk, North, South or West Podunk, & somehow, others took it like I meant it, so there it lay... unexamined.
Yep - just as I'd heard of what I'd assumed was a made up own, so had others. Imagine me with my little jaw dropped when I saw the town of Podunk on a local map!!! I was baffled to learn that it exists - & imagined it's only in my state. For years, in the dusty corners of my mind, I'd assumed that little town was somehow kinda famous, but it was just another thing in life that didn't seem to make much sense, & that was the end of it. I went through many years not knowing it exists in other states too. By that time I was an adult & just mentally shrugged, like huh...& THAT was the end of it.
Love your collection of reaction clips. These things help to keep us in line. We need more hysterics & those who are just plain aghast about pretty much anything we can think of & thoughtlessly blurt out, reminding us - we just don't fit in, do we?

I just discovered this channel and I can feel it changing my life! Hubby and I are moving from WI to CO in less than 3 months. Now, rather than stress about finding housing we are thinking about living in our camper full time :) I haven't been researching long, but the one question I have is should we get a National Park Annual Pass? I haven't heard anyone really talk about those yet. Please advise.

You're so awesome girl, just bought my 61 canned ham and getting her "Journey", and myself ready for an artistic nomadic life. Yesterday I watched a live stream from Drivin n Vibin where Kyle played his awesome music and it got me thinking. What about having a meet up (app or other method?) for nomads where we can group camp and maybe even hold events to get creative together?

Actually, there are already some of those types of 'meet-ups' going on in various locations, Ehrenberg being the best known, I believe. There is one in Vancouver, BC next month, and I've heard of one in Florida, also. Lots of people meet here and there and travel together a little as well. So I think there are lots of places to make connections, if that is what you are wanting.

As usual, very informative with some humor added to it. However, what I would like to know is, are there any free camping places where there are more people with whom to enjoy some fellowship. I am not a loner, altho' I live alone and enjoy the serenity of my own place, but if I were to go out on the road, I would not want to be alone all the time. I prefer to be where there are other people who want to get together and hike, fish, eat around a campfire etc.. I would not want to be where someone is going to be upset if I park nearby. I enjoy PEOPLE as much as I enjoy nature and the aesthetic things in life. Can you tell us a little bit about those types of boondocking areas, if there is any such thing? I want to go out on the road, but I don't want to live like a hermit all by myself all the time. Any suggestions?
I am not a boondocker, b u t I just want to suggest meetup.com. I have seen meetup groups for campers, hikers, boondockers, restaurant goers, any kind of thing you want to do, you should be able to find meetup group for.

This is a Lifestyle I might Seriously consider later on. I am taking care of a Loved Soul, when he is gone I may not want to live in our house alone. I know me, and I will go downwards without him. I will need to force myself to carry on. I can rent out the house, and not really have to worry much about anything, except Life, and whatever challenges I meet up with out there, Living it. And, If ever I need to stay home, I will have one to come back to.❤❤
I have been following your videos for some time now and am formulating a plan much like yours. THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the tips, tricks, shortcuts, hacks, and help. My question is: how do you get around federal and state rules and laws regarding drivers license, vehicle registration (stickers, plates), window tints and the like? Have you been pulled over for so-called violations of the above? Some law enforcement (DOT) are known to shakedown drivers, both private and commercial. Thoughts?
BTW, Filipino here; we still use the word 'bundok' to refer to mountains. I believe WWII American soldiers borrowed it from natives while stationed in the Philippines. A couple of them stayed behind and raised families. Rapper/composer apl.d.ap is one such descendant.

Robin, I plan to get solar hooked up to my unit to be able to sometimes boondock. However when camping with electric in campgrounds I tend to use more electric appliances, such as electric fry pan and bread maker. I’d still like to use the bread maker but do not know how to calculate it’s energy use and whether it would be worth using. Any idea?

What do you use for internet to edit and upload your videos? I live off grid and have solar and use my phone hot spot to get on my computer, but when I want to upload one of my off grid videos it uses up all my data.. how can I upload my videos to my TH-cam channel? What company internet do you use? Help!!
Dolls & Pearls I have Verizon. I use my phone as a hotspot for my computer to edit offline BUT THEN I tether my phone to the computer and transfer the video to my phone to upload so I don't use my hotspot allowance. I have an unlimited Verizon plan. I always go over the 22 gigs but they rarely show me down because I'm not in a congested network. Hope this helps!
We really enjoy your videos, such good information and you are a peach. My wife and I are planning on moving into our used (mileage is 51,900) 33-ft long 1991 Rexhall Airex Limited XL330 motorhome that we purchased 3 weeks ago, but we need to make a few minor repairs and do some badly needed remodeling to make it more bright and modern. We have been planning to go RVing fulltime for 10 years (since we first met). I own a small dry cleaner shop (www.southsimmsstreetdrycleaner.com) in Littleton, Colorado, but we rent a home in Denver where we have the RV parked on the driveway. We must remain in the Denver metro area until my shop's lease is over in October of next year.
I am also a retired CSP Trooper, who was stationed out of the troop office which covered the Denver Tech Center, so I know precisely where you were at when you recorded this video, if your GPS location was accurate. Were you able to use the Wi-Fi from the McDonald's just east of you? I would imagine that a decent Wi-Fi signal booster would have worked brilliantly, even from that distance. Having Internet access from our RV while on the road is important for us and, although we can setup a mobile hotspot from our smartphones, we would prefer not blowing up our data plan when Wi-Fi is so readily available for free everywhere.
In several of your videos, you state that you are in Colorado, and in Denver more often than elsewhere, specifically. The next time you are in the Denver area, we would love to meet you and "pick your brain"...and get a selfie with you, if you are up for it. You have become such an inspiration to us. We would enjoy showing you our RV renovation plans and what work we have done up to that point. While you are here, I'd also be happy to take care of any dry cleaning needs you might have. You wouldn't be the first fulltime RVer we provided professional dry cleaning services for.
