Ba'al: The Archaeology of God's Rival

  • The Bible holds particular animus for two foreign gods in the Bible - Ba'al and Asherah. Today we're going to look at Baal in the Bible and in the archaeological record. We'll look at some textual evidence but also at what archaeology, particularly from Ugarit, can tell us about the storm god Ba'al. We'll try to see why the Bible has such strong negative perceptions of Ba'al when the ancient world was filled with other deities - so why the hate for Ba'al in particular?

Excellent video! BTW, you claimed that Ba'al was beardless, but it seems that the depiction shows a cleft beard with no mustache.

I think the whole concept is the comparison of two opposites...light and dark...man and woman...sun and moon... positive and negative...but to make a long story short the true test is to embrace both opposites to make a perfect balance

Interesting the conflation of Baal and Yahvé. I read the other day that this was was a particularity of the northern kingdom. In Israel Yahvé is often associated with bulls like Baal.

You mentioned "theophoric" and I wanted to point out that "YAH" in Hebrews names was just one manifestation of a so-called theophoric and "YAHU" was the other.
