    ===*My #1 Rule:*===
    Pedals are tools. They don't do anything until you play through them. For me, they are there to supplement a great sounding amp. Speaking of, just listen to the tone of only my amp in this video. It is AWESOME. (In my opinion, anyway). This is the rule: make sure you're playing through an amp that sounds great on the edge of breakup. This allows you to use fewer OD pedals and either use your pedalboard real estate for other effects or downsize the board altogether. Do not try to "fix" your amp's tone with pedals! And do not get caught up in the idea of what your pedals do. Rather, focus on what YOU can do with certain pedals. It's a subtle shift of focus that puts the music-making and creativity ball in YOUR court, where it has always been, but which focusing on pedals can make you forget at times. Bottom line for me: *I can do my best and my guitars and pedals will sound their best when they are working with a great amp. I play in the studio, so cranking amps isn't a problem for me. I know that's not feasible for everyone, so the other thing to consider is you also might need to pick a smaller amp or one that has power scaling OR look at some cab sims if you have a home setup that allows you to reference your guitar through a set of studio monitors. I might be able to crank a Deluxe Reverb to 10 because my speaker cab is in a different room, but I understand that most people can't do that, especially if you're playing small venues or at church. A direct speaker cab emulator like the OX Amp Top Box (my link is above 🙏) will solve this for you.

    Nice video and great attitude about gear. I love gear too, and I do love pedals. I never thought about it analytically before, but I think I buy pedals that I simply like the sound of. When I hear them, I get a big "YES" in my brain. So, all of the gain pedals are to my taste to begin with. I swap them out with each other to keep my ears and creativity interested and and inspired to avoid boredom. Even though they don't sound alike, they are pleasing to my ear and can get something a little different out of me on different days. PS: Biscuit is incredible sounding! Yowza!

    Ive just started using a pedal board- before i had a multi effect pedal but in the amp effects loop- nice rich tone. But im basically the bands utility player. Some acoustic some harp some bass. So i set up my rig to minimize my load. I have it set so when i can switch to harp then click on the distortion channel add a delay or reverb or both. If the next song is acoustic i switch to the guitar feed (baggs preamp) turn off the distortion and select reverb or delay or neither- whatever. So its very much a tool for routing my instruments and some texture. I run mostly clean except the harp so im getting alot out of one amp and a small board. It was born out if a need to be compact and versatile.

    Hey Justin, I was intrigued by your #1 rule and it got me thinking about pedal platform amps. I'm curious to know your thoughts on them, considering your emphasis on having a fantastic amp at the edge of breakup. Pedal platform amps typically offer clean tones with high headroom, meaning they don't break up easily, or at least not until they're cranked up really loud. Examples like the Suhr Bella or the Two Rock Traditional Clean come to mind. I'd love to hear your perspective on this. Your philosophy and approach to tone resonate with me. Thanks!

    • @JustinOstrander
      @JustinOstrander  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I find that amps with a lot of headroom are susceptible to large jumps in volume when stepping on a boost pedal. I just prefer when the amp is cooking to the point that I can go from from clean to grit all in my right hand attack. When set that way, the amp doesn’t get a lot louder when I step on a boost. It’s like self-mixing in with the band. Cheers!

    • @robwolfbrandt7741
      @robwolfbrandt7741 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was going to ask Justin the same question - you worded it really well.
      Perhaps if you have a pedal platform kind of amp (something with a ton of headroom that barely breaks up) you could obtain similar results by having an always-on light breakup overdrive last in your OD section - something like a lightspeed.
      My tone is nowhere near as good as Justin’s, but this is what I’ve been doing with my two-rock studio sig.
      Justin’s videos, however, make me want to plug into my 3rd Power Wooly Coats Extra Spanky MKII, which will get that edge of break-up tone like a Deluxe.

    • @JustinOstrander
      @JustinOstrander  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The HX has two loops in it. So you can have two pedals "inside" the HX. If you get the HX Edit app, you can assign where in the order of effects your two loops happen. I assigned mine between the last HX delay and the first HX reverb. Hope that makes sense. Maybe I'll do a video about getting around the HX.

And the resonance knob at zero.

    • @JustinOstrander
      @JustinOstrander  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! Believe it or not, the bridge pickup on the Biscuit is hotter than pretty much every humbucker guitar I have. For me, it comes down relying a ton on the guitar’s volume and tone controls rather than having different pedalboard settings for Tele, P90s, Jazzmaster, Strat, humbucker, etc…

    I'm super curious how your are setting up the expression pedal at 16:51. Do you have it mapped to both Mix and Feedback? 0-100 or a certain range? I love this concept of controlling delay with expression pedal. I'm thinking of adding a 2nd expression pedal to my midi controller just for this purpose. I use it to control Helix Native, which is essentially the software version of HX Effects.

    • @JustinOstrander

      It’s patch dependent. But yeah on the one delay it is controlling mix and feedback

    I bought the GB because of you. It sounds fantastic. My only issue is the delay when you turn it on. Is this an issue for you during recording? • @JustinOstrander
      @JustinOstrander  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All of my tube amps take longer to turn on. The HX and the H9 also take a second to boot up. That said, the GB did have a bit of a learning curve for me. I tried several times to activate the drive and boost together, forgetting that this is how the pedal stages the gain in 25% increments. Took a while to break myself of that.

    • @BoBigReds
      @BoBigReds ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JustinOstrander Sorry, to clarify, when I depress the foot switch there is a delay from when I press it to when the pedal engages. Every other effect pedal I have engages the effect when I depress the foot switch. It does’t sound like it’s an issue for you, which is good to hear! Thanks again for the wealth of info. I’ll buy your presets when they are available.

    • @JustinOstrander
      @JustinOstrander  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BoBigReds Ah! I see. Yes, there are a few pedals out there that activate on the release of the switch rather than the pressing of the switch. This is part of how the GB was designed due to how you cycle through the different kinds of gain and boost. I totally agree-that was a learning curve for me as well.

    I use an HX Stomp for most of my work these days, whether it's DI or in front of a Carr Rambler amp. The H90 piqued my interest but if the old M9 is good enough for Uncle Larry, it's hard to imagine needing to upgrade anything Helix.

It’s great to learn the software, but it’s great to be able to make adjustments on the pedal especially in the studio. I like your concept of pedals. I may be old school, for a sound or a tone to work, it has to fit the music and feel good with the fingers.

    Couple things: Do the lights on the clock pedal and the HX blink simultaneously once they’re locked together?
    And, after watching days and days of guitar content over the years, something has become clear. The guitar crowd consists of three main groups:
    1. Players - “If it sounds/plays good, it is good."
    2. Collectors - "I want the cleanest/most beautiful version I can find."
    3. Dealers - "What's the resell value?"
    Whichever description fits you best affects how you view gear. All these groups are valid and no one is exclusively in just one group. Be careful though, if you're a player, it doesn't serve you to get too wrapped up in what collectors think. (Sell them pedals if you wanna.)
    I'm a player and I often switch between my Custom Shop Strat and my Mexican Tele. They both sound incredible and connect with me. I waited until I found the guitars that I bonded with because that connection is way more important to me as a player than whether it's collectible or what the resell value is.
    I'm with you on your pedal assessment. You seem to be a player. Don't get too wrapped up in what collectors and dealers are interested in. It's fun to dabble in those worlds but being a player wins when in doubt.
    Love the channel!
