    You will be able to keep them outside all year round. As my platinum Medaka survived the snow and ice last Winter here in the UK. This year they bred and I now have 2 half barrels full of them and yet I only bought 7. Best fish I have ever kept and I have kept fish for donkey's years. Added bonus is that I now don't get my tasty blood sucked by the mosquitoes any more since having them 😁 You won't regret getting them that's for sure!

      Wow, that's great! What were your winter temps like?

    • @jessicasinclair323
      @jessicasinclair323 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Minus temperatures. Very cold. Thick covering of snow and ice. My one recommendation is to put them in a non metal container that is at least 18 inches to 2ft deep. As I think you may find that it freezes sideways as well as from the top as metal is poorly insulated against the cold. Mine are in thick black plastic half barrels. Oh and I didn't feed them either as they sort of go dormant until it all thaws out and you see them basking in the sunshine. They'll eat the algae off of the sides of your vessel whilst waiting for wee winged beasties to lay their offspring in the water. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

      @@jessicasinclair323 Well that's good to know. I might just bring them inside for the winter. One slip-up or heater malfunction and my fish will be frozen solid!

      @@jessicasinclair323what do you feed yours? I'm also in the UK and looking into getting some for my DIY pond. Have you any videos?

    • @jessicasinclair323
      @jessicasinclair323 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cherylbeswick I don't feed them anything. You just need to make sure that your tub is heavily planted with indigenous pond and marginal plants in semi shade. They like to sunbathe. Make sure you've set it up for at least 2 months before you add them. You can add daphnia when the water starts to Green. They feed off of the green microbes and in turn will feed your fish. But afterwards, you just allow the matured water and plant life get on and the whole set up looks after itself! My only real tip is that 2 thirds of the water needs to be heavily planted for your biodiversity to flourish. The fish lay their eggs in the roots of the plants. Which should be planted between rocks as opposed to soil. Whenever you later thin out the plants be sure to put them in another water filled vessel because there will be Medaka eggs in them. Great place to order your plants from is Sweet Knowle Aquatics. Good luck and enjoy!

    Awesome update!! Those rice fish are super pretty in that pond! I love how bright white they are so they're easy to see. In the winter are you going to leave them out there with a heater or do you think you'll scoop them up and bring them inside over the winter? I always wanted to do this and debated dragging the pond into my garage with grow lights for the winter. We use to live on a farm and had stock tanks for the animals and in Ohio even with heaters they would still freeze :(

    • @SimplyBetta
      @SimplyBetta  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's what I'm afraid of! One slip-up or broken heater and this pond will freeze solid in no time. I'll probably bring the fish inside in autumn, overwinter the lily in my garage, and empty and store the pond in my shed.

    Sounds unbelievable but it is illegal to keep Madaka rice fish outdoors in the uk. As they are non native and have the ability to survive low temperatures they are very much classed as an invasive species and it is stated by the authorities that it would be detrimental if they were to get into our waterways. Consideration has been given to banning imports of these fish. Currently the onus is on the seller to ensure they are sold to be kept indoors only. How this can be enforced I have no idea, it all seems a bit ludicrous to me. I would of thought we had a lot bigger fish to fry.

    Nice video and fun to watch. Now I'm going to be annoying. Although most Medaka are pretty hardy, the kind you have there are generally understood to prefer fairly warm temps in winter. This is the case with some varieties including "Platinums", varieties with long fins, the Java rice fish, and some others, so be sure to check first as all that sort of info is online. They are really neat little fish, very personable. I would really really like to get the variety that look like tiny koi but they still cost a bundle in the US. I think they're popularity is going to grow because they are just such perfect pets and easy to keep in a small space, have less drawbacks than goldfish, prettier and not aggressive like mosquito fish or minnows. Thanks!

      @@SimplyBetta Bringing them inside for the winter makes sense, but, also keep in mind they evolved to hibernate in the winter and will be healthier if they're given a few months of downtime. Don't keep them too warm inside, 50s is probably best. And don't rouse them when they're resting for the seasons or try to feed, that will keep their metabolism low and lengthen their lifespan.

    I don't know anything about Medaka rice fish but if they're native they should be able to do well in winter ( in ground pond ) You also need to insulate the pond outside because it is considered raised pond which is pretty easy to freeze up the whole thing if the temperature drops to 25 specially the water is not moving.
    Getting a fish tank heater is a good idea ( get a powerful one ) Fish tank heater is not that easy to break if you can secure it in a safe spot such as near the bottom of the pond hide it behind the plants or rocks. Gold fish are hardy if you can put a few small ones like 1 inch ( not more than 3 fish ) A net is also recommended for the nosy raccoons.
    If the fish are hardy with good preparations for winter they should be fine.
    I have my big back yard fish pond myself for the last 25 years ( Gold fish & Koi ) The pond is deep enough, I have over 2 inches of ice 95% cover the pond in every winter, my dog can walk on it, because of the water fall keep running 24/7 the pond will never able to freeze up 100% plus providing a way for the fish lethal ammonia to escape.

  • @kenjiro2676
    @kenjiro2676 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fish bred outside are hardy and healthy, winter is pretty efficient at culling off what look like seemingly healthy fish so you are left with strong breeders.

      I really want to share if he recovers and keep it a surprise! It's a fairly uncommon one ;P

    Love it! I wish I could find platinum medaka locally. But now I am curious about what your first choice was. LOL!

      Thank you, I really like how it turned out. Next year I'll add in fish earlier in the season, too, so hopefully I'll get some fry!

    I'd love to know what your first choice fish was someday. I'd really like ricefish to get them at some point. I made an indoor pond (10 gal) and planned to get ricefish, but ended up opting for free mutt guppies from a friend. I really needed an easy win after some fish losses in other tanks T.T But someday I'll get ricefish, someday! (and the platinums are the ones I really like!)

      @@SimplyBetta They are a delight, really. We picked a few females with an orange body color so they show up nicely in the dark mini pond. I got a lot of black and gray babies due to one of the males (and the single gray female we also snagged) and I've been moving them into a regular tank to start selecting for that too. ☺️

    If you are ever looking for more types of colorful Medaka check out breeder_bros I love Medaka and breed them as well they’ll do fine year round they normally enjoy cooler waters and just like goldfish they tolerate freezing temps!
