It's not my all-time favorite, but I do enjoy that fact that it's streamlined, and you don't have to settle in for hours upon hours of grinding and aimlessly wandering around looking for the next thing to do. Yeah, this video states the obvious purpose of this being an entry-level taste of the genre, but it's also a good rpg for casual players who just want to do quick sessions from time to time, progressing through the game and moving the story along (as cut and dry as that story may be). I actually tried Chrono Trigger and a couple other FF games again recently, knowing that they were awesome, but I honestly just don't have the time for those now days. I can sit down for a half an hour or so and grind away a few levels on those games, not really accomplishing much at all. This, on the other hand, I can pick up and make some progress and move right along in no time. Like it or not, it really is one of the very few "quick fix" rpgs available.

I played this back in 2003, I don't remember it being ridiculously easy as people say, but I remember I had no problems beating it. It had an average difficulty from what I can recall. Also, like you mentioned in the video, the soundtrack is simply amazing!

I've been watching Mystic Quest randomizer races lately. Been loving how they can something fresh and a little challenging with Mystic Quest as a base game.
I'm glad to see a review of this game that actually recognizes it for what it is. I'm always going to like the game thanks to the fact it did for me exactly what it was designed to do - introduce me to RPGs. I can credit it with getting me excited about RPGs and Final Fantasy in particular, at an age when I could barely read and couldn't handle anything more advanced. It definitely poses absolutely no challenge anymore, but at the time it was challenging enough for me.
I like how this game had more emphasis on interacting with the environment than FF II (IV) did, almost Zelda-like. Plus it was lighthearted/silly (perfect for when I was 9 years old...and like you mentioned, the music is awesome.

Can't stress enough how much I love your videos. If I could gripe a little on this one, I think you come off a little harsh on saying it's a waste of time even if you are "overqualified." A game doesn't have to be challenging to be good! You could even go to say that if you enjoy the pokemon games (especially the old ones) you could definitely enjoy this game. That's how I view this game--Pokemon of the Snes!
I was about 5 or 6, saw this game at my local Toys R us and got it for my birthday. This game made me love RPGs, I couldn't read well yet but loved every minute of it. It got me to love Final Fantasy , Chono Trigger, BOF and such.
I bought it when it first came out. FF3 wasn't out yet, and there were few SNES RPGs out there, and I felt this game filled that void between 2 and 3 nicely. It's super easy, but I liked the Zelda-esque puzzles and especially the music.
This game did it's job. I played this somewhere around Final Fantasy 4's release in the states and found it much more enjoyable because of how young I was. It was nice to not have to grind like in FF1. Mystic Quest deepened my love of the genre.
>going through comments, seeing people chatter about playing FF3 when they were kids. Pretty sure enough time has passed that we can start calling it FF Six like it was meant to be.
@@F3NR1R04 I call it FF6 to remove ambiguity, but I won't fault anyone for calling it FF3 because that's what the game was branded as. Plus, with whatever regional differences may be in place, especially for FF4, there's some merit in calling the US releases by the US names.
@@anouk356 Like I said, I call them by what they're supposed to be. But for a game like FF4, the US SNES release is so different from the Japan SFC, the PS version, the GBA version, DS, PSP, etc., that calling it by its branded name is ok by me. Plus, if you were a US gamer in the early 90's but quit gaming shortly afterward, I don't expect you to look back at your gaming years and say, "Final Fantasy IV was my favorite game."
@@mrmacross You should say that,FF2 is FF2, 4 is only 4, 4 for the console x or handheld y. its not that hard. FF is not the only game existance that has differances in ports LMAO
I know many don't like it, but I've always had a soft spot for the game. I wouldn't be opposed to a Mystic Quest II set in the same world, but as an actual deep RPG and not a stepping stone into the genre. That soundtrack, though...
This was my very first RPG and finding out it was made to tailor that experience for first time players, I have to say this game stuck with me throughout my life. The soundtrack is unbeatable! The experience is amazing for a first time RPG player. Excellent review. I do have to disagree about how easy it is, there are some challenging parts to the game especially if you try to rush through it without leveling up properly. But other than that, it is pretty easy indeed. I still love this game so much.
Going through my snes collection figuring out what to keep and get rid of and there are a lot of games I have not played and stumbled upon your videos. I like em, quick, to the point, show some gameplay allow me to make a quick decision if this game is really for me or not.
I played it as an RPG veteran already and enjoyed it oddly enough. The OST is fantastic, with battle 2 being one of my favorite SNES tracks, and even if the game is simple and streamlined, it's well done.
I'm one of those overqualified players, but I loved FFMQ. It's akin to playing Stardew Valley (relaxing). The music was great, the story may not be original but it is ENJOYABLE. There are no needlessly useless fetch quests happening here. It is by far a very relaxing RPG to play.. just throw up and enjoy the music and the deteriorating sprites of mobs when you fight them. Collecting weapons/tools add a little extra to the game. Meeting up with Tristam in the near-end was just a bonus.
This game is an ideal pick if you want a quick RPG experience, since it is short and straightforward. We need more RPGs like that, to be honest; a lot of RPGs take themselves very seriously and focus a lot on story, but sometimes you just want to jump in and fight enemies in an RPG environment.
I've played both SNES Breath of Fire games, both SNES Lufia games, both SNES Final Fantasy games, Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Gaia and Super Mario RPG. I've also played and beat this one as well. I'd still play this game if I had it available.
The visual depictions of the dying enemies were an interesting idea, but there's a flaw in the execution. The way the enemies look visibly weaker implies they have less capacity to do damage to your party, but of course that isn't the case. So the idea is good but they should have found a way to indicate damage without also suggesting weakening. This is especially important if you're catering to an audience who doesn't know JRPGs and might not know the conventions.
I love this game. It has the most rocking tunes for an RPG. I enjoyed the story line and the game play. You can jump and swing axes and use your sword to hit buttons and other cool gimmicks like that.
I was a 16 bit RPG veteran when this game came out. It was entertaining, and I never understood the negative criticisms it received, but I do admit that the battle system and battlegrounds were pretty boring. I remember using a turbo joystick with the button rubber banded down to clear some of the tedium while I read a gaming magazine.
I'm _almost_ living proof as to the value of this game. My first ever RPG was Dragon Warrior, and my second ever RPG was Mystic Quest. If it wasn't for Mystic Quest, I would probably have abandoned the genre. While it's pretty common these days for games to hold your hand as you played through, it wasn't really a thing at all in those days. So, beating Mystic Quest really kept me on-board playing RPGs.
I play through this game once a year or two. I'm a JRPG fanatic and Mystic Quest is well beneath me, but sometimes it's simplicity and awesome soundtrack is all I need to relax my mind and recharge my batteries when I need a break from all the epic story telling and strategies I need to use in regular JRPGs. Also, we need more JRPGs with a metal sound track like this one. As for how it would sound on the Genesis, nah, not needed. The SNES has a superior sound card compared to the Genesis and can play every Genesis track perfectly. The Genesis, on the other hand, cannot play every SNES track perfectly.
+gwgux The dirty-sounding sound card for the Genesis is probably best suited for metal music. One example of a track that sounds really awesome on that console is the track "Last Springsteen" from the game Contra: Hard Corps, that track is _amazing._
Thanks for the honest review, Im an avid RPG completionist fan who's played the best classics growing up, I was looking into giving this game a go that's why I looked this video up, and not to say it doesn't look enjoyable but I don't want to play something that's so easy, I do like a challenge, the only other RPG I found easy that I hold dear to my heart is Chrono Trigger
@@SNESdrunk then again if it was one of the one first few RPGs I played when I was younger it would have a place in my heart, you never know, I might still give it a run anyway because it's Finally Fantasy nonetheless, I might love it as an easy run through
I would say that final fantasy mystic quest does present some challenge later in the game like the 🌋 level if you aren't doing the bare minimal of making sure your heros aren't stocked or healed most of the way you will get a game over and the game will let you continue the battle again thus making other players to revise their strategy of beating a certain enemy. Myself i come across a were wolf my character is at low health without healing i would be dead every single time. So yeah if you aren't keeping characters health high consider you failing over and over again. One tiny detail i know if you die the stuff you did in battle like healing mp will stay with you when you load.
I love the fact you bring up a PHD in Nuclear Physics applying to 7-11. It Reminded me of when a person holding multiple science doctorates went on "Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader" and completely failed the show since much of the knowledge they asked about was superfluous to the Doctor's day to day life.
My mom asked me what game I wanted for my 12th birthday; I asked for Final Fantasy 2 (IV), and she got me this one by mistake. I was disappointed, but I did enjoy the game at the time; it was indeed my first RPG. Got FF2 the next year. :)
I'd actually say that it was perfect for the rental market in the 90's. It was not my first RPG and it's not amazing, but taken in context, with the period when the rental market still existed, it actually filled a niche that really isn't served anymore. (Maybe RE3 Remake) Aside from that, I liked a lot of the environmental gameplay that had light Zelda aspects, I wish something like Chrono Trigger, which had visible enemies and big sprites, had.
I just played through the game, the game is really easy but I still found it mostly engaging. Some battles can fall into the 'tap A to win' loop that killed games like the older Pokemon titles for me, (and the battled that do fall into that are rather quick with a turbo controller) But though most of the game I still at least had to put some minimal thought into what I was doing so while it was not hard it was not brainless. The game just started to drag for me in the last dungeon or two before the end mostly because it runs out of content, and by that time I found a perfect strategy for all the formations. But yeah I gotta agree the weakest thing about the game is the paper thin story, it's as barebones as you can get.
I played FF4 (FF2 in USA) before Mystic Quest, and while it was no where near the same level, I didn't expect it to be. (Not many games are that level anyway.) I read the box. I knew specifically that it was made for the entry level player.
I actually really loved this game. Despite the simplistic design and level of difficulty, it was different in a way that is hard to explain. I made it a point to fight every monster, get every treasure. It was a fun experience.
I love the game and for me, it's one of the best and among my most favorite ones. Not because the game itself is perfect, but because of the nostalgia and the way it got me into gaming in general and into (j)rpgs in particular. It's very simplistic, but that doesn't take away from my appreciation for it. Same goes to games like Dungeon Keeper or Diablo which introduced me to other genres.
I played ff4&6. When MQ came out,I knew what it was, but picked it up from Blockbuster anyway. Even though it was extremely easy, (I beat it in one rental period of 3 days), I still enjoyed the game. It was fun. Id compare it to reading an epic fantasy novel like Lord if The Rings, and then taking a break to read a short novella like Emperor's Soul, not in terms of quality of story, but in terms of breadth of experience. Still an enjoyable game even for seasoned RPGers.
"Not missing anything" I'm having a blast with this game. For someone usually on point, you put in overtime hating this game. And not everything needs to be compared to Chrono Trigger. Playing CT on my PS1 was the worst gaming experience I've had in 30 years (insanely bad load times).
This was the first final fantasy game I played as a kid, i must’ve been about 5 or 6 and I loved it. It is an incredibly easy game, no real effort needed. Would’ve been good if they chucked in a special boss somewhere that was challenging. The last boss you just use cure on it and it’s done haha
I think I was 8yo when I first played this.... My mind didnt understand what a real RPG was but I played in order Zelda - Zelda 2 - Chrono Trigger (Didnt finish or liked it at the time) Mystic Quest - FFVI - Back to Trigger (At this point I appreciated what a true rpg was and MQ was a stepping stone)
if it wasn't for this game, i would have never enjoyed any other console rpg ever, it was fun, short , linear and had a great soundtrack, played it many times, and i enjoyed it a lot.
Its not as bad as people make it out to be. Yes, its a beginner's RPG with a high level of hand holding, but the music, the enemy damage display and other aspects make it a fun and quirky game to play. Even if you are an RPG guru. Frankly, I'd say its more asking a nuclear physicist to run through an elementary physics guide, maybe see where it could be better and just enjoy the good bits. Just to use your analogy.
great videos. i'm definitely one of this game's detractors. i owned the game back when it came out and i grew up playing dragon warrior 1 and final fantasy 1 when i was eight or nine years old. when i first played mystic quest (again, after buying it) i was heavily disappointed. i can still vividly remember thinking oh it's just a tutorial at the start of the game and it will get better...but no the whole game is like being stuck in a never-ending tutorial mode. in my opinion, it's a horrible starter rpg because of the complete lack of thinking it takes to play through it (the bar is set way too low). it's just one of those games you slog through because you started it and want to see it to completion.
Eines meiner Lieblingsspiele fürs SNES. Tolle Atmosphäre, gute musik, leichtes Handling. Es hat alles was ein gutes RPG braucht. Hab's letztens erst wieder komplett durchgespielt. Kann gar nicht verstehen was andere schlecht daran finden. Es ist ein Geheimtipp.
But.. but I died on that minotaur in the sand dungeon repeatedly! ;_; I don't remember the specifics, but I was trapped where I saved, I couldn't leave or level without fighting the mino, and I was underlevel. Also I couldn't complete the game because my cart froze in the ice dungeon in a particular place every time. Secret protip for beating those 10 fight icons: Hold A
If this game had a story whose depth was on par with those of its contemporaries, that would have been great, as it would be accessible to beginners without necessarily turning off RPG veterans.
I live in Germany and I will always remember that game for it's ... let's say unique German translation. And yes, I know it was one of the few games they actually translated to German and they likely wanted it to be accessable for kids also, but attacks like Lala song or people in the village being like Hello, I'm Heidi, I'm looking for the mountains?!?! What the fudges?
The Super Nintendo has higher sound quality than the Sega Genesis though so I'm a little confused as to why I would have sounded better on there. I guess maybe because of how the sounds work on the Sega Genesis The Rock would sound better? Maybe I guess. In most cases when there's a cross-platform game it actually sounds better on the super nintendo. the only time I can think of that it sounds better on the Sega Genesis is earthworm Jim one, however earthworm Jim two sounds better on the SNES
This game for me was exactly what it was meant to. I played this when I was about 6 years old, while I had played zelda LtP, and soon after Secrets of Mana, Illusions of time etc, this game was the gateway to RPG games for me, turn based RPG I suppose... When I played it again after years of Xenogears and other RPGs under my belt, yes it was stupid easy and made me wonder how I ever struggled in this game haha! Again, I played this in German, so I made up nearly the entire story for myself at that age; and it was epic! hahah I should maybe hack the rom and redo the story! LOL The music also turned me into a metal head haha!
I feel Mystic Quest is in part why I never got into pokemon. When pokemon got out I was like... 15-16 yo and I was used to playing excellent turn base RPG like FF6, Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, etc and when I played Mystic Quest it felt like a cool wrap of nice music and visual but way too simple gameplay and when I tried pokemon I pretty much felt the same way. It was about collecting monsters and the combat / RPG aspect was just a simplified version to appeal to kids. So whenever there's that pokemon fanboy telling me "BUT ADULTS ALSO PLAY POKEMON" yeah, they do, but not only I'm too old to be nostalgic about it, it's also way too simple for me and I'm not interested in the collecting part. I'm not crapping on pokemon, but some people just refuses to understand the concept of target audience. And I feel Mystic Quest, like pokemon, focused on a set of people to please and they did a good job at that.
I'll be honest. I was the target demographic for this game. I admittedly enjoyed the character/enemy designs. The combat turned me off of the genre for years upon years. Only recently being able to understand why people enjoy JRPGs. With Earthbound's release on the Wii U being my "Aha!" moment. And am now currently playing Breath of Fire for the first time. At some point I will dive into some of the FF games. I just need to figure which one.
They're goal of getting people into RPG worked for me. It was the first game that got me into it all.
Ditto
Had the opposite effect on me, I swore to myself I would never get another RPG, coz FF:MQ was so boring. But bought FFvi by shear luck and loved it

what an amazing soundtrack
the soundtrack is probably the only reason i keep replaying this game every so often.
plus it is kinda relaxing in its simplicity
I was about 5 or 6, saw this game at my local Toys R us and got it for my birthday. This game made me love RPGs, I couldn't read well yet but loved every minute of it. It got me to love Final Fantasy , Chono Trigger, BOF and such.
Mystic Quest was the first video game ive ever played and it still to this day has one of my favorite soundtracks of all time
I bought it when it first came out.
Pretty sure enough time has passed that we can start calling it FF Six like it was meant to be.
omg yes that has to be one of my biggest pet peeves, hate when people call FF6, FF3
@@F3NR1R04 I call it FF6 to remove ambiguity, but I won't fault anyone for calling it FF3 because that's what the game was branded as. Plus, with whatever regional differences may be in place, especially for FF4, there's some merit in calling the US releases by the US names.
@@mrmacross No. thats just being stubborn, none of the games are still called that
@@anouk356 Like I said, I call them by what they're supposed to be.
I wonder if there are mods to make this game more of a challenge or make it more advance. I have fond memories of this game for sure.
Only if you want to speedrun it. It's actually got a quite a bit of replay value that way.
I have this game on my snes classic because of the nostalgia. Everything he says is true tbough. I still enjoy it though.
The music would have sounded like balls on genesis, I always thought the music was better on SNES when it came to games both consoles shared
agreed. One of my faves is Phantom 2040 - music was great on snes, and sounded tinny as hell on the genesis.
What song was playing in the background in the beginning of the video? It’s dope!
It's Dungeon of Ice from the game's soundtrack.
This game is an ideal pick if you want a quick RPG experience, since it is short and straightforward. We need more RPGs like that, to be honest;
a lot of RPGs take themselves very seriously and focus a lot on story, but sometimes you just want to jump in and fight enemies in an RPG environment.
Enjoyed it as a kid and still revisit it from time to time now, as a beer drinking, no stress rpg.
My first RPG as well. It was a good way to start.
I love this game. It has the most rocking tunes for an RPG. I enjoyed the story line and the game play. You can jump and swing axes and use your sword to hit buttons and other cool gimmicks like that.
I played this game after final fantasy 2 and 3 or 4 and 6.... and I loved it.
I really would love a mobile port of this game and think the simple nature of it would lend itself really well to it.
+gwgux
The dirty-sounding sound card for the Genesis is probably best suited for metal music.
One example of a track that sounds really awesome on that console is the track "Last Springsteen" from the game Contra: Hard Corps, that track is _amazing._
@@Peter_1986 agreed the thunder force series is another great sounding game series for the Genisis.
Yep, you heard it here folks, this game took musical cues from a game that came out over a year later :p
Thank you for taking the time to watch Max
@@SNESdrunk then again if it was one of the one first few RPGs I played when I was younger it would have a place in my heart, you never know, I might still give it a run anyway because it's Finally Fantasy nonetheless, I might love it as an easy run through
@@maxlong8316 play it! , is like a Oasis after the war in yours others RPGS
It Reminded me of when a person holding multiple science doctorates went on "Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader" and completely failed the show since much of the knowledge they asked about was superfluous to the Doctor's day to day life.
that one Medusa fight like 80% in is capable to be lost due to stone status
One of my first Rpgs
The music in it is great. Doesn't have much replay value at all, but it's definitely worth playing once.
This is still a much better attempt at casualizing RPGs than almost anything Kemco made throughout their career.
(Maybe RE3 Remake)
Aside from that, I liked a lot of the environmental gameplay that had light Zelda aspects, I wish something like Chrono Trigger, which had visible enemies and big sprites, had.
I just played through the game, the game is really easy but I still found it mostly engaging.
Some battles can fall into the 'tap A to win' loop that killed games like the older Pokemon titles for me, (and the battled that do fall into that are rather quick with a turbo controller)
But though most of the game I still at least had to put some minimal thought into what I was doing so while it was not hard it was not brainless.
(Not many games are that level anyway.)
I read the box.
I love this game and so wish for a remake or remastered release. I have played nearly every final fantasy game along with other ones.
My mind didnt understand what a real RPG was but I played in order
Zelda - Zelda 2 - Chrono Trigger (Didnt finish or liked it at the time) Mystic Quest - FFVI - Back to Trigger (At this point I appreciated what a true rpg was and MQ was a stepping stone)
if it wasn't for this game, i would have never enjoyed any other console rpg ever, it was fun, short , linear and had a great soundtrack, played it many times, and i enjoyed it a lot.
Remake of ff mystic quest would be nice.
I always loved the cover art for this game
Wow! is the first review that is not negative as many other on youtube. Is a fun game to pass time.
I like the battle damage sprites.
It's still fun, and still has a ton of character. I loved it as a kid.
My first RPG! loved it. Have so much affection for this.
Might have been easy for yall but how did you beat the airship stage
IMHO this game is still fun today, even if much inferior to other FF games. Just keep your character level as low as possible then you're set.
lol, i got a game over once or twice when i played it. it was, however, the first RPG i completed
LOL
The music also turned me into a metal head haha!
Man! Now that I hear this song I will attempr to play it some day! Just for the music that is amazing!
