  • Paula D. Foster, MSW, LCSW, is a clinical supervisor and therapist with a seasoned background in social work for the gay and lesbian community and the field of HIV/AIDS. As part of this webinar, Paula will address the needs of the gay and lesbian community in a behavioral health setting as well as the population specific growth opportunities of the clinician.
    Paula will explain gay history and culture, discuss the issue of stigma in the community, and present strategies for the clinician when personal values seem to conflict with the core values of social work.
    Learning Objectives:
    Learn strategies for addressing ethical dilemmas when personal and religious values seem to conflict with the core values of social work.
    Gain a greater understanding of the issue of stigma and its impact on the gay and lesbian community.
    Gain a greater knowledge of the barriers to accessing health care services for the gay and lesbian community.
    About the Speaker
    Paula Foster MSW, LCSW
    Private Practice
    Paula D. Foster, MSW, LCSW, received her bachelor's degree in social work from Louisiana College in 1986 and her master's degree from the Hunter College School of Social Work, City University of New York in 1993. She spent 13 years in New York City, and her work included fundraising for the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center and getting involved in the field of HIV/AIDS. She continued this work when she moved to Nashville in 2001 and became the director of emotional and practical support for Nashville CARES. Paula has also served as co-chair of the Ryan White Part A Planning Council for the Metro-Nashville Transitional Grant Area.
    Paula has been an adjunct instructor at Tennessee State University, the University of Tennessee's School of Social Work, Nashville campus, and the Vanderbilt Program in Inter-professional Learning. Paula is a past president of the board of directors for the National Association of Social Workers, TN, and serves as a representative to the board of directors of the NASW in Washington, DC. She is a trainer with the HIV/AIDS Spectrum Project of NASW and has developed educational workshops for social workers throughout Tennessee. Currently Paula is practicing privately as a clinical supervisor and therapist.
