I wrote academic IELTS recently, and in writing, first, I did the task 2 very well because I spent 45 minute on it, but unfortunately I could not finish the task 1. I only was able to write the introduction, overview, body 1 and a small part of the body 2- based on the information given, two body paragraphs were sufficient. Could you please let me know that what happens to scoring for this particular task, when someone cannot finish the task; to put it differently, which parts of the band descriptions for this task will be negatively affected? I will truly appreciate your response in advance.
ciruss azizi Hi, this will affect the scoring for the criterion of task achievement. The first issue will be word count. If your task 1 is under 150 words, your band score will be lowered. Luckily, you got your overview written which is the most important part, but missing some details will result in not adequately covering the task which may limit you to band 5 - it just depends how much you missed. Task 2 is worth twice the marks of task 1, so there is a chance that you could still do quite well. We will just need to wait and see. Good luck!! Liz

I have seen many model answers prepared by IELTS examiners in Cambridge Authentic Papers (1-16) which do not include an overview! How can that be possible?
Why do you think IELTS will give you model answers that are easy to copy? They own the test. It is not their job to provide you with easy model answers to copy or a formula to learn. It is teachers who provide this. Also IELTS Cambridge test books are NOT providing model answers - they are providing sample answers - this means the answers are not models but examples of candidate writing. Furthermore, an overview is essential. IELTS have shown in their band score descriptors which the examiner will follow as well - www.ielts.org/-/media/pdfs/writing-band-descriptors-task-1.ashx. Look at Task Achievement band score 5 "there may be no clear overview". This means one of the difference between band 5 and band 6 is the overview. To get above band 5 in TA, you must have an overview. Finally, it is possible to have an overview which starts with "In conclusion". If you state a conclusion which contains already mentioned points (ie a summary of what has been written) - you have no overview and are repeating information. Most conclusions are actually summaries of points already made. But if the "conclusion" provides key features for the first time, it could be considered an overview - but with an inappropriate linking word at the beginning. As you see this is a complicated issue. You must decide for yourself now that you have been given a clearer picture.

You need to read few task one Nd task two essays linking words and structure given by liz will definitely help you

The examiner is looking for an overview in task 1 and a conclusion in task 2. This is published by IELTS in their band score descriptors.
In IELTS official preparation materials (IELTS 8) in the section "very good model answers" there is a conclusion part.

In short, we need to put overview in task 1 right after introduction where as conclusion should be the last paragraph of task 2.
