- XDefiant reviewed by Phil Hornshaw on PC, also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
XDefiant joins the free-to-play shooter crowd as a respectable competitive FPS built around various Ubisoft franchises, but little makes it really stand out. Its shooting mechanics generally feel great, and even dying doesn’t kill the momentum since you're dropped right back into the action within a few seconds. Some of its issues, like weapon balance, are relatively minor elements that we can expect Ubisoft to adjust over time. Tougher to solve, however, is the clash between its main ideas: fast time-to-kill makes a lot of its class abilities feel difficult to make the most of because you’re usually dead before you can use them. It’s also lacking a defining mode, leaning on samey point-capture ideas and tried-and-true but tired concepts like Payload and Kill Confirmed. On the other hand, excellent maps keep things interesting longer than they otherwise would be, so hopefully it’ll have the time it needs to carve out its own niche.
It's basically free Call of Duty without taking over all your hard drive space.

Is just like old cods without skill base matchmaking, I'm having a lot of fun with it.
This game is more fun that it deserved to be. That's basically all you need to know.
Nothing makes it stand out, it may even be missing stuff, and yet when you play it you want more.
But why play this game over something like The Finals? This game just feels like a worse version of The Finals, not to mention The Finals is free

@@Atrashkidplay this game and then play the finals. This is way more enjoyable. The guns, the map design, and gunplay surpasses the finals in everything. Finals is fun for the first 4 hours and then just feels boring and repetitive
Been on for 12 hours
It is lacking in things like sound design for one example BUT there is something here that makes me keep playing. It’s also free so it’s hard to complain. Is it perfect? No. Is it fun? Yes. Overall I’ve been enjoying it.
No5 only that it's free2play, it's actually that you don't to purchase a Gamepass/PSPlus subscription in order to play online unlike COD and the GP/PS+ requirement to be able to play online the entirety of its multiplayer.
Not a cod killer but still glad it exists. It does lack soul. A lot still needs fixing and improvement. For me the sound design is terrible, and the hit reg can be quite off at times. Not to mention lack of rewarding progression, streaks, etc. anything that really makes Cod addicting.

@@jsho31 Except it was made by former cod developers, has all the typical game modes and the ones that aren’t have the tiniest twist or have been done in other games like Overwatch. All the guns are cod staples. 3 lane map structure is exactly how cod maps are. It is by every measure doing its absolute best to be cod and that’s no secret

As a Hijack Dedsec player, there is plenty to hack. Running a class that also has EMP grenades make it a total shutdown unit, even when your abilities are on cooldown. Shields, Health Stations, Bouncing Betties. There is enough to hack to give opportunity to put opponents in very unexpected and uncomfortable positions, while rendering the value of their ability to nothing. Whether you hack it for your own team to shoot back through the shield, or to steal healing, or just lob a grenade to save that ability for a more promising hack, Dedsec is one of the strongest units in the game. Also, Spider do be fun, but I’m defending hijack here!!! Ontop of that, the range on the hack is RIDICULOUS compared to even the intel suit. It’s not crossmap, but if you get eyes on a barrier from across an opening, you can absolutely flip the tables on an enemy that is hunkered down and getting agro.
That being said, it would be nice if the cooldown was instantly reset when it doesn’t successfully hack something… that sometimes happens 😂😂😂

The inconsistency in TTK or dying around corners is what's killing my experience. Bullet registration is all over the place.
People saying it's just a flat out better game than cod, are delusional. Lol. Like what you want and all, but if people even attempted to be objective, cod is significantly significantly larger and more polished across the board.

How are people struggling to unlock weapon attachments? They have boosters AND just had double XP over the holiday weekend. AND Ubisoft has challenges you can complete for EVEN MORE weapon boosters.

It's a casual shooter.
You call it casual, but you have everyone hard sweating sniping at every turn.
If it’s casual why were everyone in my first 5 matches jump shooting and bunny hopping around every corner?
Once you get past that Welcome Playlist you won't think so anymore. People are out here bunny hopping and strafing mid-air with MP7's or one shot Snipers that have next to zero flinch when shot at. Also they might as well remove Active Camo since it's completely useless. The wallhack ability is better. And since the game is already out... Smurfers will start being in that playlist as well
People keep complaining about the guns being hard to level and sh1t but you comparing it to cod that is a game that only lasts a year before they sell you the same sh1t, Xdefiant isn’t a yearly resale of the same sh1t, it should take longer to do everything!

From what I've gathered from this game, why play this over The Finals? This game feels like a less responsive version of The Finals mostly because of how the weapon and classes work. So far, there is no reason to play any class that's not the Singa class because he has more health and since all the classes get the same weapons, there is no reason to not choose the class with the most health and the weapon that does the most damage. From what I've also gathered, using the Lmg feels the same as the sniper and the mp5. It has no reduced ads speed, no reduced mobility, and it has more ammo. There is no reason to choose something like the mp5 or m4a1 over the lmg since it has better damage, more ammo, and has no drawbacks. Compared to Cod or The Finals, you can see some balancing issues. At least with The Finals, weapons with more damage are locked behind classes so higher DPS is pocked behind the Light class which has less health but higher speed, while burst damage is locked behind the heavy class which has more health but is the lowest of all classes. So why play this game over The Finals?
The maps are pretty and eye catching Activision should take notes..

The match making and maps are pretty rough. Sometimes you get into a game where the entire enemy team never dies and steam rolls you. Other times you get a bad map and the other team just has an easier time winning objectives

- Uhm, no! Have you ever tried playing Occupy where the enemy team has a healer ult up, a couple of shields, and a flamethrower ult? Try going into that and see if the abilities are a non-factor.

This might be one of the most objectively wrong reviews I’ve ever seen IGN make. The entire specialist argument was entirely wrong and came down to him simply not knowing how to use them. They are balanced great and you have plenty of time and counters, they are very much a huge factor in every encounter.
The reviewer plays like a bot so he's obviously not gonna know how to use abilities properly ☠️. But yeah, the abilities are very important and useful.
An enjoyable game for people who have dropped off the yearly Call of Duty releases. Its fun. Nothing groundbreaking. Enjoyed it with my friends.
This game has been fun so far, Ubi needs to fix some stuff but I'd play this over COD for sure, it's way more fun.

Best shooter ive played in awhile. Maps are eye candy. That fresh off the shelf new kicks. Game is just on another level. FPS smoothie. Kind of like the next overwatch but different style. Has a rainbow six feel. Game is produced by original call of duty producer mark rubin. (Modern warfare 1 and 2) Original Executive producer of Infinity Ward.

The gun sound design isn’t punchy enough and therefore doesn’t feel as satisfying to play. This can definitely be improved though so not a dealbreaker but just makes me less inclined to play for now

Sniper is not 1 shot anywhere ( only headshots ) , completely false , if you sniped on this game , you know half of your landed shots if not more , is likely a hit marker. Players complaining about it , just have skill issue
The game is great overall and hopefully they will continue to grow the experience to something more unique. Right now it feels like Burger King if call of duty is McDonald's.

2042 is pretty active as well. It has redeemed itself to some extent and people are enjoying it.
