Yes, Austin had a Southern Gospel tinged childhood. He also had a degree in musical theater. Home Free met him when they came onto a major company's (Carnival Cruise Lines? I can never remember.) ship as guest performers and he was there as part of the regular entertainment crew/staff. When they had an opening a bit later they contacted the enthusiastic young singer who was so eager to join them. This was...maybe around 2012. He'd been with Home Free about a year or less when they appeared on season 4 of the Sing-Off (and won!) at the end of 2013. He goes back to his theater training with his rendition of Bring Him Home from Les Miz with Sebastien Douyon on piano. About 3 months ago Austin and Rob did a video called Two Country Singers Try Singing Opera - Nessun Dorma. Rob went back to his opera training which he hadn't touched on in 15 years for this one. They sound MARVELOUS!
Austin is originally from south Georgia and he grew up being around his daddy who was a traveling gospel singer. He was in the limelight early on and he was comfortable around an audience.

In an interview Tim said that when Austin first joined H/F, he'd say something and the others would look at him (Tim) to translate. I think Austin is from a theatre family, musically. I used to play Percy Sledge over and over as a child. One of the best songs ever. And every now and then, someone else can sing it. Enjoyed you both.

He has a special gift of communicating the message of each song and you can tell he enjoys what he does. Some students that major in vocal music performance never learn to perform music vocally. He’s a true performer and is always sincere about the message in the song as it was intended to be.

What a good time! Grew up around Oxford, Sardis and Batesville MS. Went to all kinds of churches and heard a lot of gospel music. My mom even dated one of the Blackwood Brothers! Yes, Austin showed his gospel roots in this, but don't forget Rob's soul performance in Boys to Men's "End Of The Road". It was awesome as well. I don't think there is any member of the group, including Adam Rupp, who can't give an A-1 performance singing or beatboxing! The more I hear them sing, the more I know that their next performance, somehow, is going to surpass the previous ones, so I never get tired of hearing them. The original was by the late great Percy Sledge. It was later covered by Michael Bolton (I'm not a fan of Bolton's version, I think it's rather over-wrought). I love this rendition - Austin has an astonishing set of pipes!
