    How do I mix mortar?
    Mortar is a wet paste made of sand and cement
    To mix a small amount of mortar by hand:
    1 Put the dry sand and cement on a board and mix them together very well
    with a trowel or shovel.
    2 When mixed properly, all of the mix will be the same colour.
    3 Make a heap of the mix and make a hole in the middle
    4 Put water in the hole.
    5 Lift the dry mix into the water - a little bit at a time until all the water is used up.
    6 Mix it all together. Keep mixing for at least five minutes.
    7 The mortar needs to be a paste like mashed plantain or potatoes.
    If the mortar is too dry it won’t spread or stick to the blocks properly. If it is too wet, the water will separate from the sand and the mortar will run off the blocks. Add more water or sand/cement until your mix is right.
    Only mix enough mortar for the number of blocks you can lay in about 30 minutes. In hot weather, the mortar will start to “go off” and be unworkable in less than 40 minutes. You can work with the mortar straight from the mixing board, but many tradespeople put the mortar into a bucket. It is easier to carry in a bucket and the mortar lasts a little bit longer before it goes off.
    A good trowel is the most important tool when you are working with mortar and blocks
    The mortar joint running along the top and bottom of the blocks is called the bed joint. The up-and -down, vertical joints are sometimes called “perpends” by tradesmen.

    i gave up on getting the blocks level with each other. dont even check that they're level with each other anymore. funny thing is it still looks level with the naked eye. i make sure each block is plumb and level and then plumb with the block beneath it and move on. my pride wants it perfect but my sanity is more important than my ego. those 8 inch blocks are no joke, i'm using them for the entire structure and it is not a fun process. my record is 50 in one day [by myself]... i watched this channel and other videos before i started and thought this was gonna be easy. was dead wrong.

    Here, we use 8 inch for foundation and ground floor walls if we going up a next level. Main difference between what you guys do is we use ground beams 95% of the time. But rebar in every other block.

      it make you get too comfortable and forget that you need to plumb and level as you go

  • @patrickturner2788
    @patrickturner2788 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    So when you finish the wall do you "splash then render" which is the finish coat. I always get this confused they built my house in Westmoreland in 1992. It's block with deck roof.

    • @paynefuldiy
      @paynefuldiy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The flashing goes on first the make sure that the wall is plumb and straight and the render to make it smooth so water cant soak the walls

  • @alismith1320
    @alismith1320 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice, but you only need to plum a level the rows you are laying don't need to carry the level all the way down 👇 they already plum and level 😊

    • @paynefuldiy
      @paynefuldiy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes but these block have a lil fault where the top of the blocks have a lil curve edge so i have to plumb each one.
