  • Railroad Switching At A Cool Railroad Crossing On Short Line Railroad Cincinnati Eastern Railroad CCET. This was a rare train move on a Sunday. A rock train was dispatched to the quarry at the end of the active section of track and had to pick up a loaded scrap metal gondola car at Cohen Recycling. The train is seen doing switching work in Macon, Ohio and then we see the other side of the train as it passes Winchester, Ohio. I like this crossing because it has old Norfolk & Western Railway signals right next to it and the customer siding is next to the crossing. You get lots of horn action here for the train horn lovers. This is a long train for this line. The train crew consists of a father and son combination. The father is the conductor and drives his personal vehicle. He switches the tracks, works the derails and gets the gate at the scrap metal spur. His son is the train engineer who is in the leading SD40-2. The second unit is a GP15-1. The train has one gondola car of scrap metal, an empty tank car for storage and 28 hopper cars that will be loaded with stone at Hanson quarry. The quarry is at Plum Run which is just a few miles east of Peebles. There are a few more miles of track past the quarry that are used for car storage and past that the track is out of service and hasn't seen a train in 17 years. Trains are starting to run on weekends so this won't be a rare train move much longer. This is Part 1. The train shut down at Mount Zion just a few miles east of Winchester. The next day the train continued on to the quarry. Part 2 will be posted tomorrow and will include both sides of the train as it passes through Seman, Lawshe and Peebles, Ohio. Part 2 will show the rusty rail before and after the train. This video ( Part 1 ) was filmed on May 22, 2022AD. Thanks for watching my videos!
Don't forget about Chessie and Norfie at the end of the video and please leave a comment!

These switching videos are so cool, even more is listening to the conductor talking to his train. The SD40-2 looks and sounds awesome, they are the workhorses of railroading. They’ve been around for decades a testament to those who builds and maintains them. I enjoy watching Norfie , Chessie
and company they are such a blessing.
Thanks for documenting shortline RRs, and RR in general, good one JT.👍🏼

Love these switching videos. The SD40-2 is awesome! It sounds so nice revving up. Hearing the conductor as they work is cool to listen to. They sure didn't waste time leaving, either. Chessie having good time, I see. Hey Norfie!! Thanks again Jaw Tooth.

Very nice new engines switching on a Sunday.
Other than a heavy hand on the horn, nice catches. Once the consist was ready, it sure moved out quick. Those cars must have been empty for it to move out so fast.
This video exemplifies why I enjoy your channel. You've always got something different, that I've never seen before.
It looked like Chessie was ready for a nap, or just woke up from one...such a big yawn!
Norfie is getting to be a healthy, beautiful, full grown cat now. Her coat is soft, smooth and shiny.
Take care, my friend. See you on the next video.

Great communication between the conductor and engineer, you barely hear them usually, at least not like this conductor. great partner to have. I love the communication between the 2.
I'm amazed that at 65-68°F we need a jacket, or sweater to be warm, comfortable, but in January it feels warm outside at that temperature. You mentioned the temperature, and was wearing a jacket made me think about it. Nice to see the cooler weather.

The spooky growl of that non-turbo GP15's exhaust. Had to put in my

Union Pacific local switching Geeps here where I live that sound the
same but I've never got a good recording of it like yours- Thanks.

Still amazes me how far Cohen Bros has come. I grew up in Middletown in the 60's & 70's, and they had two "dumpy" little scrap yards on Yankee Rd & Woodlawn Av. Now they seem to be all over the place. Hard work pays off.
Another entertaining video from JT!! Thank you sir.

saw about 12 trains go by my bridge job in Portsmouth Monday all within a 10 hour work day. We have a railroad flagger coming out in the morning to get us track authority. I will be running a lift above both rails dropping lumber down. The Loram ballast cleaner is working in the area also.

I saw the Loram ballast cleaner just a few miles east of Portsmouth on the NS line. Where is the bridge that is being worked on? I must have gone by it and didn't notice

ChainsawN&W1218, the switching is really cool, love those SD 40-2S air horns, there's a place I film on NS Whitethorn District where they actually still have and use the old N&W color position light signals like You were filming ,but earlier this month an NS signal maintainer told Me they were replacing them with PTC signals, I'll sure miss them, I filmed alot of other ones in operation that NS replaced already.

JT, I have to tell ya, those switching moves confused me, but after backing up and watching it a few times I realized that the COEX 394 high side gondola was the only loaded car out of the scrap yard. Seems it would be more efficient, from a logistical standpoint, to wait 'til all 3 cars at the scrap yard were loaded. Nonetheless another great video .. thanks. Keep 'em coming.

Good switching action.👍 Strange the last car didn't have a "fred" or a flag. Watch out for ticks in the tall grass. 🦗😁

Cool vid, great local railroading action there. Looks like that little black car right at the beginning was thinking about running the gates then hastily changed his mind? Oops!
