What newcomers need to do after landing Canada? As lots of student are travelling now for May intake, We would like to give some replica of what the first week of your time in Canada should look like. What should you do? It's long, but it will probably help you. 1. When you get your study permit from Immigration, Check your study permit, every detail in it. Check if any conditions are written in your study permit. 2. You can use taxi services at any Airport in Canada. You can use them to travel or have some relatives/friends pick you up. 3. Get a SIN number ASAP. You can go the next day after you reach Canada. Carry your passport and study permit, and go to the Service Canada office near your location. 4. Get the phone number. Compare the carriers for the cheapest data plan. 5. Open a Bank account. Look for a bank account that doesn't require an annual fee. Also, get one credit card providing cashback or other points. Don't forget to Carry your study permit, passport and SIN number while opening a bank account. 6. Get the Public Health Insurance provided by Province. Only Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan provide free public health insurance. You need to take a Valid ID, Study permit and address proof to get this insurance. 7. Give the driving test exams for which you are eligible. I did not mention the exams' name because it differs from the provinces. 8. Start making a resume and apply for jobs. Remember, no matter how early you come to Canada, you can't work before your classes start. 9. Visit your college. Some colleges ask to submit study permits to them (make sure about it). 10. You can open the TFSA account if you are interested in investment. You can google more about the benefit of this account. People are mistaken about this account; like getting your paycheck in TFSA and getting tax-free, it does not work like that. In short, it's a tax-free saving account; every money you earn through investment will be tax-free in this account. 11. While doing grocery, try to look at flyers. Use an app like reebee and flipp. Same chicken that costs $9/KG in one store might cost $5/KG in another. It will help to save a small amount. As a student, you need to save money in every possible way you can. 12. Track your expenses. You can use the Money Manager App. Don't spend too much on things like coffee, drinks, smokes and other stuff. You will not realize how much you spent until the end of the month paying your credit card bill. Make good track of it. 13. When you arrive in Canada, you may face many scams and frauds. You may receive a call from someone posing as CBSA or CRA officer. They will try to threaten you and later ask for payment. Common threats are like SIN is expired, a problem with study permit conditions, violation of student status etc. Please don't believe them. CBSA and CRA will never contact you like that. Don't trust the people easily here. You are more likely to get scams. as a government or IRCC official. 14. Look around the places, explore the vicinity of your city, and prepare for your time. Don't care about what others have to say about you. Boost up your energy. Every time you feel demotivated, think about why you came to Canada. Did we miss anything?
