  • Jennifer Pharr Davis discusses her journey of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail by herself as a recent college graduate. Importantly, she remarks how her adventure sparked a streak of deep personal growth, and she challenges the audience to recognize that adventures for all people- no matter what their background or their place in life- is not irresponsible.
Jennifer Pharr Davis is a hiker, author, adventure speaker, and 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. In 2011, Jennifer covered the 2,181-mile Appalachian Trail in forty-six days, eleven hours, and twenty minutes, maintaining a remarkable average of forty-seven miles per day. By doing this, she claimed the overall (male or female) fastest known time on the “A.T.” and became the first woman to set that mark. Jennifer is founder and owner of Asheville-based Blue Ridge Hiking Company (www.blueridgehikingco.com), a guiding service that strives “to make the wilderness accessible and enjoyable” for hikers of all ages, genders, and ability levels.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Jen we are all truly a part of nature, but you are a force of nature! Loved your talk. It will motivate me all the way to Alaska.

What a cool chick! There is something about her attitude, an unpretentiousness, that I find extremely attractive.
What I want to know is what happened to the guy that couldn't take a hint? Did he go by? If so, at a pace of 47 miles a day, were you afraid of catching back up with him? Did you run into him again? If yes, did you give it to him straight? Did you carry anything for self defense like a gun or bear spray? I would've told the guy to put an egg in his shoe and beat it? "I said SCRAM!"

25%? That's a bit of an overstatement. Its more like 10%

Great talk, but pictures would've made it even more enjoyable.

I think the beauty of the trail wasn't really the goal. It was finding an adventure and tackling it. Pictures would have taken more time (which is limited in a TED Talk) and perhaps distracted you from her words and real message.

I so badly want to be one of the 25%.... but mom duty is my life now. Sigh

Mom duty is one of the two most important and rewarding jobs you could ever undertake- please don't sigh- take all the beauty and adventure in this world and share it with your children

@@benrutherford4487 Correct! And while the days are long as a parent, the years are short and what you have poured into your kids will last for eternity. However, it make take a couple decades to see that. Been there, done that and now rejoicing with granddchildren as we do short hikes together.
